E3 2010: Vanquish Hands-On

Today, I got the chance to try out Platinum Games newest venture “Vanquish”. The game is basically a cross between Bayonetta’s speed and style and Gears of War’s cover centric shooting game play.

I played the PS3 version which unlike Bayonetta, is graphically identical to the 360 version. I played as Sam Gideon, the game’s main character. In the demo he is fighting in his powerful mech suit alongside his American allies against a futuristic Russian robot army

The main gameplay is very similar to Gears of War. You run to cover, aim and fire at your enemies. The new, unique feature of this game is a fast sliding ability. With you, you can slide from cover to cover and to get to other areas fast. This, fast, frantic pacing sets it far apart from Gears, giving you an adrenaline fill experience.  You also have a slow motion ability that you can use during battle, and automatically kicks in when your health gets low.

Like Halo, you can also use the enemy attack to your advantage. In the demo I was able to capture an enemy mech that looked kind of like the AT-STs from Star Wars, which I then used to lay UTTER waste to the enemy. You also have several weapons at your disposal that you gun can transform into at any time. Handy if you run out of ammo for one or more guns.

The action was crazy and intense. At one point, my team knocked a wall down and I slid up the stairs, right into a huge group of enemy soldiers. There guns nearly tore me to pieces before  I slid back down and headed for cover. Barely making it out alive.

Vanquish was a LOT of fun, probably the best game at SEGA’s booth. It puts a neat new spin on third person shooting, and action games in general. Stay tuned for our full review of the game when it comes this holiday!
