Square Enix’s Yoichi Wada says SEGA failed at Globalization.

“We have to appeal to customers with different preferences. Sega did not succeed. Konami did not succeed. Namco Bandai did not succeed. Western publishers have not succeeded in selling in Japan. Nobody has succeeded at globalisation,”

Bold claims from Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada. He goes on to say;

“But it hasn’t succeeded because it was always based on Japanese direction. It was Japanese people who commissioned the western developers to make games.”

“It is important that what’s in America should be handled by Americans… The same goes in Europe and in Japan. These people who are deeply rooted in their own cultures can engage in their own dialogues. The mistakes I have seen so far are when Japanese people try to do everything the Japanese way, using Japanese workers in different areas of the world.”

An interesting point of view, but with SEGA’s great successes in Europe and America in recent years do these claims have much weight behind them?

Uhhhhh….SEGA's most popular franchise (Sonic) is more successful in America and Europe than in Japan.

Metal Gear Solid is hugely popular in the west.

So what is this guy talking about?

  2. crackdude says:

He is butthurt cause all his franchises have been sucking ass for the past 7 years.

  3. cube_b3 says:

Fuck Him, the thing I hate most about Sega and Capcom is American's developing their games, I want more in house games.

  4. Orta says:

I've never seen a more Japanese game than Football Manager.

  5. Aki-at says:

Of the one thing you can say SEGA failed at, globalization was not one of them. Daytona, SEGA Rally, Crazy Taxi, Virtua Cop, The House of the Dead etc and Sonic once did 300,000 – 500,000 units in Japan.

Konami has both Pro Evo and Metal Gear Solid that sell well in every area.

Pretty sure Tekken too worked out fantastically for Namco and Ridge Racer too.

Wada continues to be completely out of his mind!

    Them's fightin' words!

  7. Sharky says:

    This guy is talking crap.

Sega baught Creative Assembly and Sports Interactive, suddenly owned the Total War and Football Manager series and became one of the biggest players in Europe over night.

    This guy is talking rubbish.

  8. Sega Stylista says:

Sega has failed at globalization in the last decade. Time for the lazy Japanese to get their shit together and crank out a winner. It's not impossible. Get some fight in those slanted eyes.. Alpha Protocol has taught you, we don't want anymore of your western developed shit. Your company is sinking into oblivion, step up or die bitches.

  9. Sega Stylista says:

Pacman, Donkey Kong, and Mario weren't made to appeal to a specific region and they were the greatest global appealing games of all time. Get a little creative and figure it out shitheads. The time for excuses is over.

Fans, unbitch yourselves from the game marketer and start getting more demanding or find another hobby to degenerate with your lameness.

  10. Sega Uranus says:

    Uhh… No.

SEGA has had continued global success over decades, and decades before anyone ever heard of Square outside of Japan. Obviously not all of their games are huge winners, but neither are anyone elses.

He really is talking out of his ass.
