Next XBLA/PSN Dreamcast ports revealed!

by Gagaman(n) of The Dreamcast Junkyard

They are Sega Bass Fishing and Space Channel 5 Part 2. JeuxVideo24 have screenshots of how they will look on the new consoles in 720p and widescreen.

Space Channel 5 Part 2 is an interesting choice. before you ask where part 1 is, I believe they’ve picked this one simply because it’s easier to port. Part 1 one used pre-rendered video backgrounds (as opposed to in-game graphics like in Part 2) so not only would they need to re-render those videos in HD, they would either have to stretch them or force the game to be 4:3 (like the Sonic Adventure port was). Maybe this is why they have skipped to Part 2. To be fair though Part 2 is a much rarer game, especially on Dreamcast on which it would cost you a small fortune, especially if you went after the special edition box set.

And then again, here we go with another non-dc port.

I'm almost sure they will be porting the Shenmue II xbox version in the future and maybe skip the first installment of the dreamcast. Way to go SEGA!

  2. Treamcaster says:

And for those wondering about a Jet Set Radio port, I bet you guys better wait for another non-dc port. This time it should be a gba port of this game!»_»

  3. At least they're porting some very good games, and in widescreen to boot!

  4. SOUP says:

Space Channel 5: Part 2 is probably my favourite game on the Dreamcast. I can't wait to buy it again.

  5. SEGA's press release sets the release dates at around "early 2011".

  6. Grant360 says:

Was Space Channel 5 released on PC then? Disappointing given SEGA suggested that this was an emulated engine…

  7. Ulala5 says:

YES, YES YES YES T-T thanks SEGA

  8. Sharky says:

    Great news.

What does it matter what version it is if its a good game. Be thankful it is coming at all.

  9. Treamcaster says:

Sharky, I understand your point of view, however that's not what's in cause.

As a matter of fact, SEGA started this whole new "revival-project", by claiming it would bring back the dreamcast exclusive titles.

Despite that, it's been offering everything but non-dc game ports. They're using the Dreamcast trademark to advertise some other games for their own profit, involving all fans in this business scheme.

I think this is a disgusting move, that's all.

And no, I don't need to be thankful for no shit coming from SEGA. I say, fuck themselves, they just wanna rip off the few fans they still got around.

  10. CosmicCastaway says:

This is good because I have Space Channel 5: Special Edition for the PS2 but I can't really play it anymore because of the audio/visual lag on my HDTV. It'll be great to play this again.

  11. Though, does it really make a difference if a game goes from DC to PC to 360? It still originates from the Dreamcast game and the games themselves will always be associated with the Dreamcast, so no biggie if they use the DC logo. Point is: Once they leave the Dreamcast and go to another console, they aren't a Dreamcast game anyway so why complain about where they truly came from? As long as they play just as well.

  12. fluffymoochicken says:

    Sega Bass Fishing? Seriously? x__x

I guess SC5 is okay, but there are better DC games they could have gone for.

  13. Kori-Maru says:

Will they be able to sell SC5 Part 2 with Space Micheal in it or replace him?

  14. Sharky says:

Treamcaster I think you are looking to far into it. We are still getting legendary DC titles on XBLA and PSN. It's pretty much the same game no matter where it was last ported from they are all originally DC titles.

At the end of the day Sega are a buisness, they aren't exactly stealing money from you. You don't HAVE to buy these games. But I don't see why you wouldn't if its a game you like from the DC era.

  15. I'd only be pissed at the PC/PS2 ports if they actually included the DC logo at the beginning of each game, but they sadly haven't done that.

  16. AshleyAshes says:

I don't see the big deal in the ports not being direct dremcast ports. Typically when a game is ported from one platform to another they fix a few things as they do it. Heck, Crazy Taxi isn't even a Dreamcast game… It's a NAOMI game, a piece of hardware with much more RAM than the Dreamcast. They ported and made changes to get it on DC, then made changes to get it on PS2 and GC, then more changes to get it on PC and I think the base code for the PC version was what was ported to the PSP. Software evolves, but these games are remembered as classics from the Dreamcast era and that's what counts.

…More importantly, I bet you that Sega Bass Fishing bombs when it comes to sales.

  17. SOUP says:

@Grant 360: Space Channel 5: Part 2 only came out on Dreamcast in Japan, and PS2 everywhere.

    @fluffymoochicken :

Give SP5:P2 a shot. I've played a lot of Dreamcast games, and it is without a doubt, one of my absolute top picks.

  18. Grant360 says:

I loved the original on the DC. I am not bothered about whether it is a DC or PC port. But of all the DC games there are 4 I want (not including Code Verionica and MSR). Shenmue, JSR, Daytona and PSO. Of those only PSO came out on PC. I am hoping they are porting PC versions first to give them tim to port the DC exclusive games.

  19. AshleyAshes says:

@Grant360: Ewww, I wouldn't want the Dreamcast version of Daytona. Sure it was pretty but the physics. And I don't mean like 'Oh no, it's different from Daytona on Model 2' I mean 'God damn it's like driving a car made of butter over a hot skillet, what is this??? These walls hurt!'

I'd much rather see a port of the Model 2 version with online support. Or heck the PC based Ring Wide version that Sega released to arcades a year or so go.

  20. SOUP says:

Yeah, I've played the PC, Dreamcast, and Saturn versions of Daytona. The DC version has lots of tracks, but I found that the PC and Saturn version sound and controlled better.

  21. fluffymoochicken says:

I understand what SC5 is about, and I remember it having some nice "groovy" visuals (so late 90's xD), but I dunno. It is still very much a Simon Says game.

Also, I'd take Daytona DC over the PC game any day of the week.

  22. AshleyAshes says:

@fluffymoochicken No no not the 90's PC port of Daytona USA. A year or so Sega re-released a 720p port of Daytona USA to arcades agian. They ported it from Model 2 to their PC based Ring Wide arcade platform. It's basically just like Daytona USA but now in HD, antialised and has improved 2D menus to work on an HD arcade screen. But it's a port of the classic 1993 arcade game, not that ugly PC port from the 90s that was built off of the Sega Saturn port. :X

  23. fluffymoochicken says:

Oh, well that explains a lot.

At any rate, I always loved Daytona DC. =P
