Sonic fans on Wii: Please Quit Yer Cryin’!

Some folks are never happy.

As with everyone else this week, I was ecstatic to see the new Sonic Generations gameplay trailer. While discussing it over several different forums, I noticed the same topic coming up. “Why isn’t it on Wii?!” “That’s not fair, the Wii should get an anniversary game too!” And my favorite, “LOL typical Sega. screwing over Wii fans”. This line of discussion really ticked me off. Mainly because if you’re a Sonic fan who only owns a Wii, you’ve never had it so good!

First off, Sonic Generations is being done on HD consoles to take full advantage of the hardware and to help bring back the hardcore gaming crowd that loved Sonic in the Genesis era, but hated the more modern Sonic games. By the responses it’s been getting, that strategy seems to be paying off as it has been overwhelmingly positive. If they bring it to the Wii, it will just be another watered-down version of the game ala “Sonic Unleashed” (although it’s been debatable which version is more fun). That said, there’s even rumors still of an anniversary game for Wii possibly showing up at E3.

Now second, and most important, look at this……..

Five games.

Five exclusive Sonic games for Wii not available on any other system (outside of some DS ports). Three of them are major releases while the Mario and Sonic games made video game history by bringing these two titans together for the first time. What did the HD consoles get that Wii did not?! Sonic Unleashed? No. The Wii got a version of that too. Sonic 4? Nope. Wii got that one as well. In fact, only two Sonic games are exclusively on HD consoles. Sonic ’06 and Sonic Free Riders. Both of which were trounced by the critics. Gee! Lucky for them right?!

Oh, and let’s not forget that the Wii is fully backwards compatible with the GameCube. This means you can not only get Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, but the Sonic Gems Collection which includes Sonic R, Sonic the fighters and the only console version of Sonic CD outside of the Sega CD. While Sonic Adventure DX is available for download on HD, it does not include the Game Gear unlockables. As far as BC on the HD consoles go, Shadow works fine (sarcastic “yay”), as does Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Heroes (although there are some line issues) and Sonic Riders (but not in all territories and with some glitches).  PS3 is only BC if you have an early system. Otherwise, you’re SOL.

A very important point is that one of those Wii exclusive games is Sonic Colors. Arguably, the best modern Sonic game ever. There were petitions everywhere begging Sega to port the game over to HD consoles, but it never happened. So consider this, even if the Wii doesn’t get an anniversary game this year, you got Colors.

The bottom line is that the Wii is the best console to go to for Sonic fans. There’s eight Sonic games available, five exclusive and two or three that are actually pretty good (no offense). In fact, counting Backwards Compatible GameCube titles, the Wii has the biggest catalog of Sonic titles on any system! Sega has been strong in supporting the console mainly because of the strong sales numbers when it comes to Sonic games on that system. In fact, Unleashed sold better on Wii than HD by a huge margin. But it needs Sonic Generations on the HD consoles to bring back their older, hardcore fanbase or else be stuck with talks of “LOL Sonic Cycle” for the next decade.

So dry those tears Sonic Wii owners. You have it better than the HD consoles by a mile (in regards to Sonic games that is).

  1. This is good, but I would like to have seen screenshots or quotes from some of the whiny comments, so we could all make fun of them. For those of us that only come to this forum, we have to take your word for it that this is happening.

    It's happening Emmett. I seen a lot of comment's on the official Sonic Facebook page, and all my friends who only own Wiis are complaining. =P

  3. Radrappy says:

    I appreciate the sentiment of the article but telling people they should be grateful for having 4 terrible exclusive games isn't a very convincing argument.

    What i love about all of these "fans" bitching is… How the HELL can you call yourself a gamer and only have a wii? A console that's known for being a casual console with a few hardcore games here or there that last 5-8 hours and then your done with. Even still, the 360 is very cheap so there's really no reason to not have one.

  5. CosmicCastaway says:

    @Radrappy

    Just because you don't like those Sonic games doesn't mean other people won't enjoy them. I'm sure there are plenty of people who really like the above titles.

    I haven't even heard Wii owners complaining…

    SMT you hit the nail on the head. Anyone who owns just one system is really limiting their game experience.

    It's just too bad the two HD systems out currently aren't as reliable as consoles made 10 years back. 🙁

  8. Radrappy says:

    @Cosmic

    I don't give a damn if some people enjoyed them, they were poorly received and almost universally loathed. Some people like Sonic 06, does that mean we can't ever talk about its poor quality because someone pipes up and says "HEY THATS JUST LIKE, YOUR OPINION MAN?" I am fully aware that many people like bad games, thanks.

  9. George says:

    @upsidedown fuji: everything outside of the 60gb PS3 failure rate is pretty low, new 360 have pretty lower failure rates as well.

  10. Fallout911 says:

    Haters gonna hate, there's always going to be people complaining about everything.

  11. I think a lot of Wii owners who only own a Wii (sounds like a tongue twister) are very casual gamers, and in turn don't comprehend how games are developed. I think multiplatform releases like De Blob 2, SASASR and Virtua Tennis 4 make people believe that HD titles are easily ported to the Wii. When in fact they are not, they're a different (albeit very similar) title.

    Should a Sonic Generations Wii release exist, then we would not have had Sonic Colors. It was one or the other, and SEGA wisely went with two separate titles that take advantage of their respective consoles.

    Also, unless Nintendo's HD console arrives this holiday, I can't see Generations being released on that platform. Would Sonic Team really release a third version the year after the 360 and PS3 versions? Happy 21st Birthday Sonic! 😛

    @ Radrappy

    No need to freak out about it, I was just saying you didn't have to be so negative.

    As some have said before I think it's probably best to own multiple consoles if you really want to have all the titles in series because chances are there will be exclusives. The Wii got Sonic Colors, and now it's the PS3 and 360's turn to get a Sonic game.

  13. Pao says:

    @Radrappy

    Almost Universally "loathed" The Hell?

    Meta Average Scores:

    Sonic Colors: 78

    Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games: 72

    Sonic and the Secret Rings: 69

    Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: 67

    Sonic and the Black Knight: 54

    If anything, 4 out of 5 have good scores and generally positive reception, "poor" where? Or is anything that is less than 8 is now considered "poor"?

  14. Sharky says:

    Those two 'story book' games are utter shite and should never have been made… BUT they do have Sonic Colours, which I think is freaking fantastic.

    Honestly I don't care that the Wii isn't getting Sonic G. Any serious gamer should have picked up an Xbox or PS3 by now… Any serious Sonic fan will do when Sonic G comes out.

    The Wii JUST got an exclusive Sonic game, a good one… They have a wide variety of Sonic games they can play and the fact is Sonic G SHOULD be a HD experience, its beautiful.

  15. Radrappy says:

    Sonic colors is good but the rest are shit. Are you honestly beaming with pride at those numbers PAO? Yes, those are "poor" results. If I got those kinds of scores on a report card I'd be grounded for months.

  16. ImSmartUrDum says:

    It's not our fault you have chinese parents..

    haha actually my mom IS asian!
