R.I.P. Grind: Jet SET Radio Coming this Summer in Widescreen!

Courtesy of the SEGA Blog comes some very exciting bits of info regarding the recently hinted at Dreamcast rerelease. For starters, the game being released is Jet Set Radio (as if there was any doubt). The second confirmation is that the game will be known as Jet Set Radio, so say goodbye to the original US title “Jet Grind Radio” (and good riddance!). Thirdly, the game will be in beautiful widescreen as seen in the screen shot above and after the break. Fourthly, the game is coming to XBLA, PSN, and Windows PC Digital Download this summer! SEGA has also announced a contest where fans can get there art in the game and win prizes for doing so. Reminds me of when the game originally released, I recall SEGA having a similar contest.

Been waiting for this to be announced for the PC. Can finally play it on my laptop without having to resort to some awkward emulation. Still, think I’ll keep my Dreamcast version anyway (one of the consoles I brought to college with me).

Wow, looks at those smooth graphics…

    Am I… dreaming?!?

I’m all over the graffiti contest.

Not only did they pick the right name, but this actually looks like a good port

Glad they changed the name, Jet Grind Radio dosnt flow anywhere as good 🙂
Those cant be the original graphics can they? they look like theyve been improved a bit

I’m pretty sure it’s the original textures, just scaled to higher resolutions and with better filtering. The text is way sharper looking though, I can’t even read the “Besbic Rabbits” logo on the Dreamcast version unless I stand right in front of it.

“And remember, graffiti is art, but graffiti as an act of vandalism is a crime. Every state/province has vandalism laws that apply to graffiti, and local entities such as cities and counties have anti-graffiti ordinances. Violation of these laws can result in a fine, probation, or a jail sentence. SEGA does not condone the real life act of vandalism in any form.”
AHHHHHHH I got such a adrenaline boost of nostalgia when I read that :’) good times.

    Why the hate for JGR?

    I like Jet Grind.

I dislike it because it was just a localization change, done to get around an existing trademark. Aside from the package and the title screen, the rest of the game refers to Jet Set Radio. So it isn’t even a consistent change.

So when does the mayor of San Francisco get uppity about the graffiti contest? That’s all we need to digitally reproduce the first launch isn’t it?

    Jet SET Radiooooooooooo!!!

Yes! Yes! God, yes!! This is looking great! I can’t wait until this summer. Sadly, it looks like I’ll finally have to say goodbye to my Dreamcast. JSR was the game I kept going back to over and over again that kept my Dreamcast hooked to the TV. Not just for the unique style of gameplay, but Hideki Naganuma’s awesome soundtrack.

    • Barry the Nomad says:

Never say goodbye to the Dreamcast!

But yeah, regarding the soundtrack, I (and others) left questions on the SEGA Blog and they have yet to answer us even though they have answered other questions. Hope this isn’t a sign of a trimmed soundtrack.

It’s hard to tell from the screenshots whether the resolution has been improved (though they’re calling it an HD release, so who knows) but it still looks awesome. Widescreen will be nice, though nothing on the soundtrack here, which is making me worried, to say the least.

This is such good news, I’ma go get a double scoop ice cream cone at Besbic Rabbits!

  12. Upsidedown Fuji says:

Oh yeah! Give us Skies of Arcadia next please!

Man, I haven’t played this game in years! I hope it has aged well.
