Bayonetta director calls Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale a Smash Bros rip-off

Platinum Games’ Hideki Kamiya tells it how he sees it and this time its a shot at Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, a mash up fighter. If you guys have been following the game, it takes ‘Playstation’ greats and puts them together in 2D view fighting game that looks basically like Super Smash Bros. Kamiya doesn’t seem to like the idea of the game.
What do you guys think? Rip off or not?

“What do you guys think? Rip off or not?”

    Yes.

  2. SOUP says:

    Definitely a rip-off.

That doesn’t mean it can’t turn out ok though.
Streets of Rage could be accused of being a rip-off of Final Fight, but it’s still a great game.

I think it’s pretty clear it’s a rip-off of Smash Bros. I was actually looking forward to it (for Vita), but the previews I’ve read/saw all basically said the fight system, if you can call it that, isn’t really present. It’s basically a race to get your third bar filled to unleash your major attack. And that’s about it as far as fighting strategy is concerned.

I played the game at E3 and at Comic Con and I can say without question that it’s a TOTAL ripoff.

Now you might say “but a lot of genres came from the ripping off of other ones” yes, but the good ones added something new and made improvements or fresh ideas. This feels and plays like Smash Bros but not quite as good.

A shameless rip off defenitly. I can’t support it only for that reason tbh. I don’t like it when people shamelesly steal ideas like this. I mean the smash bros formula isn’t even that great, power stone is milestones better imo. Why they would decide to take smash bros as inspiration instead of doing something different and better kind of baffles me.

  6. Orta says:

I think this isn’t Sega news.

  7. Amrith says:

An ugly rip-off without the Nintendo’s cohesive artistry and rooted history. No soul, no charisma, just Sony’s disembodied money everywhere.

  8. So? Bayonetta is a rip-off of Devil May Cry.

  9. SkyBlue says:

We are all rip-offs….from our parents. 😛

Honestly, I don’t like the way it looks at all, it looks like Sony’s trademark halfassness and shallow gameplay when it comes to creating to creating an original IP or something firstparty. Like LBP or MNR. It looks like it fills fanservice, but shallow in the gameplay department.

…and sega all stars racing isn’t a rip off of mario kart?

Seriously, who cares? An SSB game with PS characters will be enjoyed by PS fanboys/girls.
