Is a new Ecco the Dolphin game in the works?

Could another Ecco the Dolphin game be in the works? The designer of the original SEGA Genesis titles, Ed Annunziata, is pushing for a new title and so far signs are looking good! Scott Foe, a consultant on mobile and social games who worked with SEGA during the Dreamcast years, got Annunziata a meeting with SEGA to discuss reviving the franchise. Annunziata tweeted:

Ecco fans, I need you to follow & tweethank @scottfoe, he convinced SEGA to meet with me now chances of a new Ecco the Dolphin x100!

If that news wasn’t good enough, Annunziata later tweeted: “Spencer is on board! (puttn’ the band back together!) :)”. Annunziata is referring to Spencer Nilsen, the man who composed the beautiful music for the original SEGA CD and Genesis games, as well as the American Sonic CD soundtrack. Could it truly be happening? A new Ecco game? While SEGA is being very careful when it comes to big budget disc releases, releasing another 2D Ecco title as a digital download is surely doable. Just look at Sonic 4, and another Ecco isn’t so crazy in that realm. Better yet, get Christian Whitehead to work on rereleases of the first two titles to accompany a new game. While we all speculate, enjoy some Ecco music after the break. Thanks to ROJM for the tip!

A true game for me on this generation, is a game released for PS3 in package form.

Of course Sega will never do this for Ecco. NEVER!

On the BEST possibilities, they will do the same shit they did with Sonic 4. Or who knows, a new cheap and shitty social Smartphone game 🙂

My god, I loved the ecco the dolphin game on the DC. No game can surpass that sense of calm and chilling feeling of that game… well till a certain point at least.

Man I love the genesis games, but love the DC game alot more. If they’d be able to fix what was broken about Ecco defenders of the future, that’d be awesome

    • I did enjoy the 3D games, though Annunziata had nothing to do with them. I think his strengths lie in 2D gameplay.

I think you are right after reading the article more thoroughly. I would love and HD game in the tradition of the DC game, but SEGA is careful with Disc releases indeed.

Well a good DLC game would still be great.

    • More Spencer Nilsen music is the highlight for me. That tune I embedded at the end is probably one of the most nostalgic/chill/awesome tunes I’ve ever heard coming from my SEGA CD.

what. Nobody wants this. Of all the ips to invest in, ecco?

    • This is the Ecco guys approaching SEGA, not the other way around. SEGA has yet to even approve, from what I can tell. And as far as “nobody wants this”, clearly there are people that do, given the reactions I’ve read on facebook and twitter. I get that its not the most popular IP, and it’s not Japanese so I’m sure it’ll get flack for that from some fans.

Nobody wants this or you don’t want this? There are plenty of people who like Ecco, especially if the original team is brought back together.

  4. Hey fellow Ecco fans! Daniel here from @LionArts (on twitter) something else you might like to be aware of is this petition fans like yourselves are backing (Ed himself is also happy to support it, of course. lol) https://www.change.org/petitions/revival-of-ecco-dolphin-franchise

Also, I recently completed a pretty epic 3D Anniversary piece commemorating Ecco’s 20th! Check it out here: http://tinyurl.com/AtlantianIllusions -been getting great reviews & I’m preparing more work to vie for a position on ‘Team Ecco’ if the game actually gets underway. Give me some love & support by commenting, liking, retweeting, etc. I come from a real biology & medical background from my college years, but then diverged back to my first love of art and storytelling -the industry always needs more passionate, creative, intelligent, artists who are also real fans of the projects/franchises they’re are part of.
    Thank You!

Awesome, i hope it will happen ! I liked the Mega drive versions and also the Dreamcast version. The Dreamcast verion was from another team but still was great ! I have waiting for this day for ages 😉

Yes SEGA, please revive Ecco! 🙂

Considering that Tides of Time ended on a cliffhanger with (probably) plans and scripts for a finale sequel and Defender of the Future had a sequel that got canned during the early stages of its development (before the team managed to include narwhals), after over a complete decade and a quietly celebrated 20th anniversary, it’s well goddamned overdue that SEGA gives the cetacean a new, quality starring role and brings up something fresh for this generation.

Also Storm should stop displaying provokative thoughts.

    I agree with STORM.
Another cheap downloadable title, do not want.

Ecco the Dolphin is one of my favorite SEGA franchises, so I am extremely excited to hear news of another game for our bottle-nosed hero.
