Rumor: Yu Suzuki thinking of using Kickstarter to fund Shenmue III?

The tweet above is from Sebastien-Abdelhamid, he happens to work for a indepent French channel and is part of the Monaco Anime Game Show (which I never heard of). I obviously don’t watch French television, so my knowledge of him is basically nonexistent, but this tweet has thrown the guys over at NeoGAF in frenzy.

So if Yu Suzuki put up a Kickstarter to fund Shenmue III, would you drop some of your cash? Also what consoles would you want to see it on?

I’ve only used Kickstarter once (for the OUYA), but I would gladly put down money towards Shenmue III. I’d prefer if they made the game for the 360, PS3, and the next-gen consoles. I want as many people as possible to experience the Shenmue series. I may even be up for them hosting a Kickstarter to first fund HD ports of Shenmue I and II for various consoles, although I really doubt they’d use a Kickstarter to do that.

Another thing Yu Suzuki said during Monaco Anime Game Show is that he’d like to make an anime or a manga based on Shenmue to conclude the story if the game cannot happen.

I was lucky enough to share a few words with him and he told me that Virtua Fighter was always his favourite IP/game.

I’d like to see a Dreamcast ltd edition if it ever surfaces, it’s only right, continue it on the console that started it all off. And it would be a great change from the usual Dreamcast releases you get these days.
And you could do a collection ver on the new upcoming next gen consoles too.

I’d plunk down $100 for sure, or more…

I’m taking this rumor with a grain of salt, but yeah… I’d definitely chip in. I’d prefer it on the 360 but would get whatever console it comes out on.

I think everyone is taking this game with a grain of salt, but wooo hooo!

I’d love to see a DC version of this game as well, but that would mean the current/next gen games’ graphics would have to match the DC graphics, because there’s no way they could do both just from one Kickstarter. That said they could make the current/next gen version a download and save on packaging etc. as well. I’d gladly pay for either!

PC. Minimum requirement: GTX 680 SLI

  8. Skateboard says:

I would donate money too. Shenmue has profoundly touched me and I want to see this happen!

  9. Eli says:

Unless it got full backing from Sega (and it’s money!), I wouldn’t want a patch work type game, just because people are craving for it. It wouldn’t do the series justice if it wasn’t a full fledged modern console game.

  10. Zeek says:

Yes I would give money and I would want it to take advantage of the latest tech, so PS4/new Xbox/PC and just focus on those.

  11. Ben says:

Hopefully we hear more about this soon, if true. I imagine the funds would add up pretty quickly, though how much would be needed for a full-fledged console sequel….dunno if that’s possible.

    We’ll see. I hope so.

I rather see another game from Yu Suzuki.

Yes, I want Shenmue but I want to see where Suzuki currently stands. He has been effectively out of the video game industry for almost a decade with the exception of Sega Race Tv.

So let him flex his gaming muscles before taking on something as grand as Shenmue.

  13. DCGX says:

Honestly I think the reason we haven’t seen anything from Suzuki for some time is simply because he wants to finish the Shenmue story.

    • Monty says:

Pretty long story then. lol Seems more like he isn’t motivated to do much anymore. Suzuki is an old man now.

  14. Kevin-N says:

It’s a shame that Sega spend 60 mil dollar on Alien.
But for Shenmue III i would give money. I want to know the ending of the game. It would be great if they make a Dreamcast version just like Pier Solar. The second best console would be the 360, the controller is alsmost the same as a Dreamcast controller. But on the 360 they must released it in a trilogy version.
