Takashi Iizuka explains why Sonic Lost World is Nintendo exclusive

There have been a lot of theories flying around online as to why Sonic Lost World is a Nintendo exclusive. Some say that Nintendo came to SEGA, offered them a pay check for exclusivity, and that before then the game was supposed to come out on all platforms. So what does Takashi Iizuka say when asked the question in the Official Nintendo Magazine?

“The Wii U hadn’t been revealed when development began for Sonic Lost World, so we were working on a PC version in order to see what kind of platformer we could make. Then, when we tried to think about which platform would be best for this game, we chose Nintendo.”Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team

So there you have it, straight from Takashi himself. Though, I assume people with their own theories will brush this off and say it isn’t true. If it is or isn’t true, who cares, Sonic Lost World is coming exclusively to Wii U (and 3DS) this fall. Though, I would really like a PC version to be released, that would mean it’s still ‘console exclusive’.

Oh? So you chose Nintendo and that’s all?

Both of you guys made a partnership, which I think includes lots of money, making them to develop the next 3 Sonic games exclusively for the Nintendo platforms: http://tinyurl.com/kb4dx8g

So.. We already know why you chose Nintendo, Iizuka, don’t act like it was free will or something.

Anyway, I’d rather buy it for PS3/Vita instead. Sonic is meant for everyone.

It sounds like it was free will dude.

I’m certain the reason they didn’t make the game multi-platform was because they felt like it. I’m also sure that Nintendo exclusivity partnership has nothing to do with the game being exclusive to Nintendo consoles.

FYI, every game is first made on a PC.

There’s always the possibility that the game will get ported. Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee was a Gamecube exclusive, and then a year later it was released for Xbox (with lots of extra content and improvements). Unless there’s some sort of contract that actual restricts SEGA from porting the game, it’s entirely possible that we’ll see a PC port, and even Xbox One/PlayStation 4 versions as well. Not saying it’s LIKELY, but it’s possible.

I’m gonna be over here, fantasizing about a super awesome PS4/XB1/PC version with all Wii U AND 3DS stages… Some may call me a dreamer…

he said the same thing about sonic colors, and then a year later laughed at the Wii saying it wasn’t HD enough for Sonic Generations

in the end it’s all PR

who knows what he really thinks. The way he answers questions seems to change depending on what platform they are on.

“he said the same thing about sonic colors, and then a year later laughed at the Wii saying it wasn’t HD enough for Sonic Generations”

Which was true, though not exactly relevant. I don’t remember him ever calling the Wii a “graphical powerhouse.”

The Wii was the right system for Sonic Colors. The game was a great fit for the system and its audience.

The Wii U, presumably, is right for Sonic Lost World. We’ll see. Graphics really don’t mean anything.

    • Will says:

I’m not ever saying he called it a graphical power house, but im just pointing out he said this exact same thing before, then proceeded to laugh at Nintendo’s platform a year later.

i agree wii u is the right platform for sonic lost world, but it’s obvious hes also working on something else that uses much more horse power, if his past interviews are anything to go by.

    • TimmiT says:

Saying that a system isn’t powerful enough =/= laughing at it. :V

    • radrappy says:

stop saying he laughed when he didn’t laugh.

I am much more interested to see how sales are going to be for this title. The 3DS should do well but with the Wii U’s install base probably still way below 4 million by the time this title releases, could be one of the worst selling mainline Sonic titles in recent memory.

Thankfully Sonic games do seem to sell for a continuous period, so that should help I guess.

  7. betablocker says:

Yeah, he also said that this game has nothing to do with Sonic X-Treme.

  8. Bentendo says:

Don’t forget also that, despite there being fans of Sonic on other platforms, his games sell immensely well on Nintendo platforms, therefore slowly transitioning Sonic into a 2nd party character for Nintendo seems a no brainer.

  9. RT says:

Takashi Iizuka is a good company-man. When the situation dictates it, he’ll tell some pretty big whoppers. He’s done it in the past, and he’s doing now.

  10. Arturo Cobretti says:

Nintendo is a gayass maker of Fisher Price toys. Sonic nowdays is for gays, wanna-bes, posers, assclowns and lame fake Sega fans that doesn’t support their other IPs and doesn’t know crarp about Sega history and will never be a fan as awesome as i am, probably one of the 10 greatest REAL SEGA FANS out there in the planet… I’m great, really! ….so… that’s my 2 cents on the whole conspiracy… please don’t get butthurt, it’s just a theory…

    That’s all folks!

Wow. That’s really weak. Not convincing or compelling in the slightest.

Love the picture for the article though.
