‘Sonic Boom the Game’ revealed as third Wii U/3DS Sonic title

Update: We reached out to SEGA of America over the big question of whether this is a reboot or it’s own thing. Their reply? “Sonic Boom is a new branch of the Sonic universe and does not replace modern Sonic.”

Update 2: The SEGA Blog has posted the official announcement. After the break, check out an image gallery for both the TV show and the game.

Update 3: This is crazy. So way back in March of 2013 a CryEngine 3 demo video was uploaded to YouTube, and the video featured some unnamed environments from Big Red Button. Those environments are actually from Sonic Boom the game! We’ve added the video after the break.

Not only is Sonic Boom the cartoon series landing later this year on Cartoon Network, but SEGA has also revealed today that LA developer Big Red Button Entertainment, a team made up of Ex-Naughty Dog staffers, will be leading the development of a video game adaptation of the series which will be exclusive to the Wii U and 3DS. This makes Sonic Boom the first Western created Sonic cartoon and video game adaptation in over 20 years, the last being Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, as well as Sonic Spinball which featured Sonic SatAM elements as well as characters which were carried over to Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Some may be tearing their hair out in the belief that Sonic has been rebooted, Sonic Team are no longer developing the games, and Sonic will forever be Nintendo exclusive. HOWEVER we have yet to hear from SEGA themselves over whether we can expect to see the usual Sonic Team developed “modern Sonic” we’ve come to know continue and be seen as separate from Sonic Boom the cartoon series and game adaptation. Much like the aforementioned Western Sonic cartoons and games being separate from the Japanese developed titles. Once we learn more, we’ll be sure to share it!

I mean…if this is what the kids are into…okay? But wow. Nope. I’m done. It’s been good Sonic.

  4. V says:

    Sonic? Exclusive to Nintendo forever?
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

    It’s trending worldwide wow.

Also, Sonic X-Treme art director and designer Chris Senn is a member of BigRedButton.

Am I the only one excited about this ?

  8. TB says:

I have approximately seven various degrees of want storming up over this.

  9. V says:

I’m not sure if I should be excited or scared.

I never liked Sonic Heroes and this looks like a sequel to that game at least gameplay wise (with Adventure gameplay thrown in). I know it’s too early to really judge but I’m disappointed. And the Sonic games for the WiiU would’ve been one reason for me to buy the system sooner rather than later.

The TV show I can live with but this game looks pretty awful so far. The graphics are not even a fraction as good as anything in the Sonic games since even Unleashed, it looks about as out sourced and phoned in as it can get. But I’m glad that this is a separate spin-off franchise, and not replacing the games entirely as I still want that magical combination of Sonic Generations gameplay and Lopst World’s art style, and who knows, this game as cruddy as it looks now might at least have some clever new ideas that could end up in future games too.

  12. This is great for Sonic fans (some of them I guess) but I’m still holding out hope that we get some non-Sonic games to come West.

  13. I do not know why you stated such in your last paragraph. This game is Nintendo’s last exclusive. Which I believe to be a bad idea when launching it as a prequel to a cartoon. It would work best if the game was released on all platforms instead of a struggling console alone.
I was not very happy with the redesign for Sonic the most, as his arms are completely blue now! Knuckles just looks silly. But since Sega said it is it’s own thing, and not a replacement. I have no qualms with it. After all I was not happy with the way the cartoon Teen Titans came out in an anime style after growning up with such amazing Batman/Superman/Justice League cartoons. But I really enjoyed them. Heck I was even more unhappy that the Teen Titans turned into a 15 minute cartoon in an even sillier art style and story lines, and yet I have enjoyed those too. Sonic seems to have been given another story line in the same vein. I wonder if Archie Comics will follow suit and introduce these designs as a single page comic in the back of their regularly more serious Sonic comic.

    • Sorry, that last paragraph was me repeating fears that Sonic fans have been sharing on Twitter. I didn’t mean to make it sound like I actually thought Sonic was forever a Nintendo exclusive.

On the fuppin Wii U and 3DS only Sega? You can bugger off then, I’ll hold out for a conversion on the X1 or PS4, I’m fed up with Nintendo hardware exclusives.

  15. Len says:

Don’t give up hope folks, who knows, with Sonic Team out of the way, this might just finally be the best new Sonic game made in years, at least since Sonic Rush (I exclude Sonic Generations for obvious reasons).

But not bloody Nintendo exclusives again, jaysus.

  16. Leo The Woodlouse says:

So if Sega’s own Sonic Team division isn’t even bothering with it’s main project IP anymore, and in particular, this title, then who is?

*That awful moment when you realise Sega’s main IP is safer in a non-Sega studios hands…*

  17. Rusty says:

I love the charterer designs, except for Knuckles, because they made him too burly. I definitely will check this game out!

  18. Hitrax says:

A lot of complaints here I say, okay, Sega have already explicitly stated that Dreamcast Sonic is not being replaced, it’s a one off, to match in with the Sonic Boom series, not the entire Sonic series.
