Swingin’ Report Show #57: Interview with WaterMelon Video Games President Tulio Gonçalves

SEGA Genesis month is in full swing, and Barry and George bring you our first podcast of the month which proudly features our special guest Tulio Gonçalves, president of WaterMelon Video Games! You may recognize WaterMelon as the developer of the phenomenal Genesis/Mega Drive RPG Pier Solar, released in 2010. Coming later this year is an enhanced and expanded HD release of Pier Solar, set for several platforms including Android, Linux, Mac, Ouya, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox One, Wii U, and SEGA Dreamcast!

Tulio discusses WaterMelon’s early years, the creation of Pier Solar for the Genesis/Mega Drive, the upcoming Dreamcast version, and what we can expect in the future from the company. It’s a great discussion, so check it out! Also, we reveal the four winners of the SEGA and Tommo Mobile iPhone case giveaway.

Make sure to help WaterMelon to bring the game to PC by voting “YES” on their Steam Greenlight page!

It’s easy to see why eponboogaloo won himself a Genesis iPhone case from Tommo Mobile. Just look at that happy face. A brand spankin’ new SEGA Genesis with one of the best games of the era included? Congrats eponboogaloo of 1992 and the eponboogaloo of today!

er1ks is one crazy hardcore SEGA fan. The guy is just five games away from a complete Genesis collection! What more, he looks to have built an entire shrine to his collection. Bonus points for the fire and hashtags. er1ks is the winner of a Genesis case, congrats dude!

natt0 presented what I describe as a “bouquet of SEGA awesomeness”. As I noted to George in our recent podcast, there is nothing I don’t like in this photo. Just genuine SEGA quality from 1989 through to today. natt0 will receive a SEGA Saturn iPhone case! Way to go! Now just tell us what’s under Sonic, we couldn’t figure that out.

francojmr‘s photo is deceptively simple. He speaks into a SEGA Genesis controller as if it were a phone, signifying that something is missing in his life. Perhaps he needs a Tommo Mobile iPhone case? The Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker in the background evokes the idea of “the dreamer” and “visionary” that… aw who am I kidding! francojmr won because his photo made me laugh, and because it reminded me of the mid-2000’s craze of Side Talkin’ on Nokia N-Gage phones. Enjoy your SEGA Mega Drive iPhone case!

Another big congrats to all the winners, and a big thank you to all those who entered. There were a ton of awesome photos we had to go through, and we enjoyed every single one of them. If you didn’t win, stay tuned to future contests. If you had your heart set on a SEGA Tommo Mobile iPhone case, check out the official site and pick one up for yourself!

Wow, the Dreamcast is capable of higher resolutions than 480p, but only disc space limits it? Make me woder what the DC could of been capable with if it ran DVDs…maybe it could get up to 720p like the original Xbox could with some games? :O

    • Presumably, a game that is very light on assets could output at 800p (if I remember Tulio’s approximation). Makes me wonder if it would be possible to develop a puzzle game or a simplistic platformer at 800p?

Ah man, I missed the contest! I don’t have any SEGA memorabilia so I probably would have just gotten drunk, dye my hair blue with Kool-Aid, put it in pigtails then call myself Hatsune Miku- likely forgetting to put on clothes.
    Maybe next contest!
