This entry of Mario & Sonic will contain a original story mode displaying the rivalry between the mustachioed Mario and Sonic gyms. The star will be your Mii character and you will choose from one of the gyms to train at. Mario’s gym will have the 110m hurdle along with beach volley, and Peach’s Training Gym that will train your endurance with pole vault. While Sonic’s gym offers the 100m dash, table tennis, and Amy’s Training Gym will train your speed for bicycle dash.

When you progress through the story you will come across new mysteries to solve in Rio, if you solve these mysteries you get different items as rewards depending on your chosen path. For example if your with Mario you will unlock a Mario Suit for your Mii and a Sonic suit if you chose the Sonic path. You can power up these suits by scanning one of the following Amiibos (once per 24 hours on scans):

  • Mario (Super Smash Bros. series)
  • Sonic (Super Smash Bros. series)
  • Dr. Mario (Super Smash Bros. series)
  • Mario (Super Mario series)
  • Mario – Gold Edition
  • Mario Classic Colors (30th Anniversary Mario)
  • Mario Modern Colors (30th Anniversary Mario)

The game will contain over 270 different kinds of costumes to use with your Miis. Each one will have their own stats or active skills. When you train on Champions Road the game will hand out Training Points (TP = EXP). If you gather enough TP you will level up your Mii and you will need to level up to use the more advanced costumes.

To unlock all these outfits you will need to collect apples. Yes, you heard me right, apples! You get them based on your training performances on Champions Road. You can unlock the costumes in the Costume Shop. If you want to buy gear, that currency is Melons that you get by exploring the city. You spend these melons in the Gear Shop (very clever stuff).

One final mode to mention in Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is a new one called Outing Marathon, this mode uses the 3DS’ pedometer feature and counts each step as a meter. The point of this mode is for the player to try and walk a marathon distance of 42.195km. Mid-rewards for this marathon mode include Apples and Melons. The game will also have daily Bonus Challenges, one of the examples shown was walking a specified amount of steps within a time limit. But each challenge will reward you.

This looks really good. The selection of sports games have the potential to be stand alone games so I hope that they are as fun to play as they look. I always wanted to Football with Sonic.

Sonic Golf doesn’t make much sense though lol
