This week saw two major releases from SEGA hitting the Japanese charts in the form of Atlus’ Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final and Valkyria Chronicles Remastered. With no major competition this week and with Yakuza: Kiwami still fresh in the charts, SEGA had a real chance of being the top publisher in the top 20 this week with the closet rival being Square and their Dragon Quest Builders title. Hit the jump after to read how the sequel to Shin Megami Tensei IV did and if SEGA managed to take the top spot in publisher marketshare.

Media Create Sales: Week 6, 2016 (Feb 08 – Feb 14)
01./00. [3DS] Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final (Atlus) {2016.02.10} (¥6.480) – 96.349 / NEW
03./00. [PS4] Valkyria Chronicles Remastered (Sega) {2016.02.10} (¥4.990) – 24.156 / NEW
15./12. [PS3] Yakuza: Kiwami (Sega) {2016.01.21} (¥6.490) – 4.973 / 90.234 (-31%)
16./10. [PS4] Yakuza: Kiwami (Sega) {2016.01.21} (¥6.490) – 4.204 / 135.766 (-48%)

It’s no surprise to see Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final take top spot, with the only other new major release being SEGA’s own Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, it was dead set for number one. However if it is a success or not could go either way, firstly it should be noted that Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final is not an expansion pack. At the same time, it’s not a full fledged sequel with Atlus reusing assets from the original release. Now comparing it to the previous release, it could be seen as a massive under performance withShin Megami Tensei IV selling 188,562 units on its first week but one has to keep in mind this “sequel” is more in the vein of a Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood or Final Fantasy XIII-2. Sales would be much lower than a typical mainline release as the games tend to re-use assets, engine and structure from the previous installment. Personally I think this was a fine result, nothing spectacular nor something poor but I could see how some may be disappointed by this result.

On the other hand, the Valkyria Chronicles Remastered result I think can be considered good to great. Looking at other remasters, such as Yakuza 1&2 HD that debuted to 40,000 units whilst Square’s Final Fantasy X/X-2 remaster debuted to 15,000, seeing Valkyria Chronicles Remastered hitting 25,000 units for a series that is smaller than both Final Fantasy and Yakuza means it is a fantastic result. We now move on to looking at Yakuza: Kiwami and at the pace it is selling the title will do no more than 250,000 in Japan. It doubles the sales of the original Yakuza remaster but factoring in the Asian sales that would push sales above 450,000 makes than this a superb performance for a remake. Finally, SEGA is indeed the top publisher for the previous week with them enjoying sales of 129,000, beating their closet rival this week, Square Enix, by a handy 50,000 units. That wraps up this chart review, until next time folks!

I am amazed that Yakuza is doing well. on the ps3

So is Sega actually making any direct profic from Atlus games now that Atlus is technically a Sega company or does it simply go to and stay with Atlus alone?
Who profits from what is never really made clear on chart records.
