Rumor: Treasure to stop making new games

TreasureRIPLong time SEGA-collaborative developer Treasure Games might be out of the gaming biz, at least for brand new titles according to the latest Giant Bombcast (time stamp: 2:22:20 – 2:24:38). The hardcore cult studio seems to be moving towards becoming more of a license holding company, which isn’t surprising when you consider they hire under 30 employees.

The last full game developed by the company was a license game for Gaist Crusher, that came out in 2014 and was exclusive to Japan. While getting re-releases of their older games on new consoles isn’t terrible, I think we will all miss that Treasure Games magic that we grew up with.

What are your thoughts on all this? Are you surprised? Let us know in the comments.

Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga were both ahead of its time
But I don’t remember a single game from them in the past 10 years

So.. who owned the Gunstar Heroes franchise? SEGA or Treasure?

sad sad news. I spent so many hours playing Gunstart Heroes with my best friend as a kid and later on I literally burned my Saturn playing Guardian Heroes.

Treasure, one of my fav companies of all time along with Sega, Atlus, Capcom, and Platinum.
What’re the chances of Sega buying them up as with Atlus? Probably slimmish but if Treasure made the offer they could get a better deal under Sega’s wing, better recognition and like Atlus they’ve long been a collaborator with Sega partnership already outside a closer deal under the Sega banner. Would make a good fit.

Treasure was one of my favorite developers, and it’d be a huge loss to see them go. Sin & Punishment 2 was my favorite game for the Wii and it was a shame (but an expected one) that it was so underrated. Gunstar Heroes and Guardian Heroes was also great, although I didn’t care for their GBA sequels. And Wario World was great fun, too, although on the short side.

I hope the rumor is false, but I wished Treasure made Dynamite Headdy 2. I’d kill for a sequel.

Why don’t Sega just buy Treasure? They’d work well with Sega plus they’d be fairly cheap considering they’re only a 30+ men company.
