Persona 5 Online Features Revealed

The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu has information on some of Persona 5‘s online features.

If you opt into the Phantom Thieves Alliance, multiplayer elements will be available during the main game. You’ll be able to cooperate with other players as you battles foes, explore dungeons, or just do normal teenager things around school.

If a teammate is knocked out during battle, the enemy can take them hostage. If you fail to recover them, another player can step in to save the day.

Networked comrades can also step in to help prevent fleeing foes from maxing your Alterness Meter and preventing you from progressing further in a dungeon.

When it comes to the social aspects of Persona 5 centered around the character’s lives as high school students, players opted in are still connected. You’ll be able to find out whatever other gamers did on specific dates and see how they answered questions in the classroom.

This isn’t the first time the Shin Megami Tensei universe has flirted with online multiplayer. Shin Megami Tensei: Nine was originally intended for online play back on the original Xbox and Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine was a full-fledged MMORPG. The fighting game Persona 4 Arena and it’s sequel Persona 4 Arena Ultimax also featured online matches.

Perhaps if the Phantom Thieves Alliance features are well-received by gamers, future Persona games might see more exhaustive online modes.

Persona 4 Golden had online features, although minor. In dungeons, you could tap the screen to send out a “help me” message, and it would randomly choose someone else online in the same dungeon to send the message to. All they had to do was press the touch screen in turn, and it would heal your team. It was a nice little feature, but not exactly social in any real way. Still, nice to know someone cared enough to put a thumbprint on their screen for you.
