SEGA Forever Officially Revealed and Detailed

SEGA Forever has officially been revealed, the service has been a mystery to fans since it was leaked a while back as it was being tested. We even did a SEGA News Bits on SEGA Forever (expect a follow up one now that the product has been fully detailed) on what the service could be. But what is it? According to the press release, which you can read in full after the break, SEGA Forever is a mobile name for classic SEGA re-releases on both Android and iPhone. Prior to this, a rumor came around that it was supposed to be ‘a subscription service’, but this press release says you get the option to play either free, ad supported version of the game or unlock it forever (SEGA Forever) for $1.99.

They promise to cover the following SEGA consoles:

  • SG-1000
  • Master System
  • Genesis/Mega Drive
  • Game Gear
  • SEGA Saturn
  • Dreamcast

The service will launch on June 22nd with the following five games, new releases every couple of weeks:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Altered Beast
  • Phantasy Star II
  • Comix Zone
  • Kid Chameleon

The press release also goes into the fact that the games will support leaderboards, cloud saves, offline play, controller support, community news feed, and a ton of languages for menus. So the real question is, what is you opinion on SEGA Forever? Is this what you expected, another re-branding service for retro SEGA re-releases?

This sounds like a good idea, but if they released it for PC, Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U with just like a startup disc featuring all of the games that have already been released, I would be willing to pay 10 or maybe 20 bucks for it. I don’t support games for mobile devices, so a console version would be nice.

  2. I would pay 10/20 IF it was for Psvita and/or Nintendo Switch.
I dont play controler pad games on my phone….jeeez Sega …. :\

Yes! Today’s the 21st so I’ll test it out tomorrow.

It’s good to see them acknowledge their home domestic hardware series again, the first time since Sega Hard Girls, I wonder if they will do more to acknowledge what game goes on what Sega system, it gives exposure and more props to the Sega console that had the Sega title in question.

Sega Forever could maybe evolve to become a premium service, become it’s own platform that can be accessible for a variety of devices like tablets, make it like a digital platform for gaming like Amazon Prime or Netflix do for films, it would be the closest Sega has come to going back into home hardware. It’s a service that acknowledges Sega hardware. EA did something similar with their ‘Origin’ service some years back, but hasn’t done much since.

Sega said that Sega Forever could do for gaming what video cassettes did for music – which ended up changing the industry. Interesting to see how the project comes along.

Wow, this sounds incredible. If SEGA can pump out constant Genesis releases, which releasing one or two Saturn/Dreamcast ports a month, they could really have something special. I just booted up Sonic 1 and was shocked at the quality of the port. I’m sure this is the OUYA 2013 version, but if every port is up to this quality, it’s going to be fun playing these. Every SEGA game for free?! This is the real Virtual Console we want.

    Looks like its out now.
Sonic 1 replaces the original paid version which is a shame. Would love if they kept that version updated.
Going to Sonic 1 and hitting restore purchases links to Original paid Sonic 1 in the store though which is a really nice thing for them to do (If only they did the same with Crazy Taxi)

Re releases again! It does not stop.

It’s going beyond 8bit and 16 bit consoles though. When has a compilation promised to have 32bit and 128 games in the same offer?
