Sonic Twitter launches poll to vote for favorite Sonic game feature, we all vote for Chao Gardens

The Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account has launched a new poll asking fans ‘Which was your favorite feature from pas Sonic games?’ with the ability to answer:

  • Time Attack Mode
  • Customizable Character
  • Chao Gardens
  • 2P Competition Mode

Guess what is winning at the moment by a overwhelming margin? Chao Gardens, a feature that hasn’t been in a Sonic the Hedgehog game since Sonic Adventure 2 on Dreamcast (OK, it was in Sonic Chronicles, but does that even count?). Who would have thought that Sonic Team might be a bit out of touch with its fanbase. Who knows what will come out of this poll, hopefully a Chao Gardens return in the next game.

The Chao Garden is a glorified tamagochi.

    It’s useless now…

I prefer Sega to focus on making a good game instead

  2. Funkyjeremi says:

I don’t understand the hype for the Chao garden… It was barely fun in SA, and out of purpose in a sonic game… Leave it to the past guys…

  3. AnimeCwboy says:

I’ll be honest, if Forces’ creator had been closer to PSO2…I would have voted for that. No credit for a cookie cutter system tho.

  4. BMS says:

Time Attack Mode is my favorite feature. CD, Rush, and Mania are some examples of my favorite games with Time Attack Mode in them.

As for the Chao Garden, it never really interested me. It’s more of the case that I barely played Adventure 1&2 to begin with.

  5. ZeroDL says:

More or less the chao garden was just an attempt to flesh out the A-Life system from Nights into Dreams and make their own tamogatchi (which was popular at the time) using the vmu. The only place I could see Chao Garden nowadays is a mobile game (freemium, of course).

2P competitive modes would be nice to see return. Online versus modes would be especially awesome.

I’m not really sure why time attack mode is even in here. Your best times have been recorded in pretty much every Sonic game. We don’t need a separate mode to time attack.

  7. AfroRyan says:

Part of what made the original gardens on Dreamcast so great was taking your Chao with you on VMU. Make a smartphone enabled Chao Garden and I’m sold, but it doesn’t matter to me if it’s stand alone as an app or as an in game feature; it’s either both or nothing.

  8. Albert says:

Chao garden is great for those who don’t like or care for Sonic gameplay. But for those of us that do like Sonic Chao garden is useless waste of space and resources.

Time attack and competitive mode is way better.

    • Neal says:

I like both, for the record. Lots of people do.

In Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 it added a lot of replay value, and was basically optional.

I don’t need a Chao garden in a future Sonic game, but I certainly wouldn’t say no to one, and I would definitely engage with it.

  9. How could yall be hatin on Chao Gardens? Chao Gradens were way funner to me than Time Attack. I just think it would be cool to see a return in the series.

    • Albert says:

Because it’s un-Sonic, out of place, slow, boring and takes up space and resources that could and should have been better spent, such as the gameplay, especially considering that the gameplay aspect suffers greatly in games where a Chao garden is present, meaning that resources were poorly managed and distributed.

It’s no better than the likes of treasure hunting, mech shooting, fishing, vehicles or werehog, something that never should have been put into a Sonic game in the first place.

Something that was never clearified that I think is an important distinction: are we talking about the Dreamcast VMU Chao Gardens, or the GameCube to GBA versions?

I’ve experienced both, but it’s extremely hard to gauge which one people remember and endear the most, especially when you factor in the age range of the consumers and the popularity/sells of the GameCube/GBA versus the Dreamcast originals.

Plus there are later port versions that I have no idea how the Chao Garden was handled. (XBOX BC, PC ports, PS Now, etc.)
