Nintendo pre-E3 Digital Event: Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games trailer

Nintendo’s Digital Event at E3 2015 has wrapped, and on the SGEA side of things we have a new trailer for the upcoming Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games title. The new trailer showcases summer sports that will be included in both Wii U and 3DS titles, though those hoping for any real surprises or hints at a story mode or party mode will be disappointed. Hopefully we learn more about the game soon, personally I’d like to see a beefed up London Party Mode (obviously set in Rio) and I think SEGA really needs to include some Samba de Amigo characters given the game’s setting.

Virtua Fighter cameos hit Smash Bros on Wii U and 3DS

SmashVir4
While the big news is that Smash Bros added two new DLC characters that include Roy (Fire Emblem) and Ryu (from Street Fighter), there were also other characters announced as Mii Fighters, including SEGA favorites Jacky and Akira from Virtua Fighter. That isn’t all that hit the market, you can also pick up Megaman.EXE (Mega Man Battle Network), Zero (Mega Man X), Isabelle (Animal Crossing), Inkling boy/girl (Splatoon), and even Heihachi (Tekken).

Each ‘custom Mii fighter’ will cost you .75 cents per fighter, if you want them on both 3DS and Wii U it will cost you only $1.15 each. If you get them all bundled for one version its $6, but if you get them for both 3DS and Wii U its $9.20. Not bad at all.

Anyone purchasing any of these pieces of DLC? Any other SEGA characters you want to see represented in Smash Bros?

Akira and Jacky Mii outfits for Smash Bros 4 leaked

AkiraJackyMiiBig

Twitter exploded with news of a Smash Bros leak early this morning. While most of the attention is being lavished on the two new characters this leak unveiled, there’s much more to it than them: Mii skins of the Virtua Fighter characters Akira and Jacky (as well as Tekken’s Heihachi, which is the outfit on the left).

What’s really interesting about Akira’s outfit is that it is literally his model from the first game, complete with the old school, flat-shaded, segmented polygonal limbs. Jacky, on the other hand, seems to based off of his appearance from Virtua Fighter 5.

Of course, it should be noted that these outfits have not technically been confirmed by Nintendo, but given the size and breadth of this leak, not to mention the simultaneous release of the above in-game outfits and in-game victory movies and renders of the leaked characters that are obviously real, this confirmation is likely only a matter of waiting for tomorrow’s Smash Bros Direct.

One interesting implication of these Mii outfits is that it means SEGA’s crossover with Smash Bros no longer ends with Sonic. Could another all-new fighter be in the cards? We’ll just have to see.

What we missed: New Mario & Sonic, Total War: Warhammer first screens and SEGA’s mission statement video

RiseSEGAbits
If you haven’t noticed, the site was offline for a few days and there was some SEGA News that we missed. At first I wanted to make a news post for every single item, but that would be sort of a waste. So now that we are back lets have a look at some of the news that we missed which includes the announcement of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the first ever screenshots for Total War: Warhammer and a look at SEGA Japan’s mission statement, painting a positive note for the future of the company.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games announced for Wii U and 3DS

Well this came out of nowhere! A Japan-only Nintendo Direct has revealed that a new Mario & Sonic game based on next year’s Rio Summer Olympics will be releasing on the Wii U and 3DS…eventually. No date was given in the trailer, but a late 2015 date seems likely if the past games are any indication.

The trailer looks like pretty standard Mario & Sonic fair, though it does seem to reveal several newly playable characters. These characters include Mario’s Nabbit, Donkey Kong’s Diddy Kong, as well as Rouge, Jet and Zazz. It looks like Sonic’s Egg Pawns and Mario’s Boom Booms will also be playable in some form, but given that they only appear as filler characters in the rugby mini game, they may not be playable in other parts of the game. These are the first new additions to the series since 2010’s Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympics.

Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX delayed to September a week before release

Hatsune Miku Project Mirai DX

I hope you weren’t looking forward to playing Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX, because SEGA has announced that they’ve delayed the game just a little over a week before it was originally supposed to be released. Instead of being in stores next week, the game will now release on September 8th in North America and September 11th in Europe. SEGA hasn’t announced a delay for the Japanese version of the game that was announced later on, so it will seemingly still be released there on May 28th.

SEGA also announced a special Launch Edition for North America, which includes “premium outer box packaging” and a wallet chain that’s based on Hatsune Miku’s belt. All physical copies will also include 19 double sided AR cards that let you see various dance moves and costumes. As for European stores getting this special edition: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

NIS America interviews Yuji Naka to promote Rodea: The Sky Soldier

NIS America just posted an interview with Rodea the Sky Soldier creator Yuji Naka (Sonic the Hedgehog, Chu Chu Rocket and NiGHTS) and director Zin Hasegawa (Fatal Frame series) on their Youtube channel. It’s a pretty interesting interview with Yuji Naka starting off by saying that it has been a long time and it really has, so it’s good to see him do these types of interviews for games again.

Yuji Naka even talks about how he has created games that have to do with speed like Sonic the Hedgehog and flying games like NiGHTS and whether that factored into creating Rodea the Sky Soldier since it has similarities. Listen in and I hope Prope and SEGA work on a project again in the near future.

SEGA 3D Classics Space Harrier and Fantasy Zone themes now on North American Nintendo eShop

Screen Shot 2015-05-14 at 6.05.36 PM

While SEGA has released several awesome Nintendo 3DS themes over in Japan, here in the West all we have are Sonic the Hedgehog themes. Don’t get me wrong, I like Sonic, but what about SEGA’s non-blue hedgehog stuff? Well today things change, at least for North American fans at the time of this article. Via SEGA Localization Producer Sam Mullen comes news that 3D Space Harrier and 3D Fantasy Zone themes release today! Available now for $1.99 each, these two themes feature graphics and sounds from both games and are an excellent way to scrub every hint of Nintendo off of your 3DS. Fill the home screen with SEGA games, pick a SEGA 3D Classics theme, slap on a SEGA branded skin and you’re all set!

No word on Europe yet, but when we hear something we’ll update the story.

Review: 3D Thunder Blade (Nintendo 3DS)

3dthunderbladereview

The final arcade title in wave two of SEGA’s 3D Classics line of games releases this Thursday, and boy is it a special one! While Thunder Blade is not SEGA’s most famous 80s arcade title, eclipsed by greats like OutRun, Space Harrier, and Hang-On, it certainly deserves a spot with the big boys. Perhaps the general public’s neglect of Thunder Blade stems from the game’s home console releases. While other SEGA arcade classics have seen near perfect home ports, Thunder Blade never truly saw a worthy release that stacked up with the arcade original. But now, nearly 30 years later, SEGA and M2 just may have done the original justice with their latest SEGA 3D Classic release. How did they do in porting this 1987 classic? Read on!

SEGA’s Okunari says they are open to do more 3D Classics

3DClassicsPhysical
SEGA has just announced they added additional titles to their ‘Wave 2′ of 3D Classics headed to the 3DS. Those titles where 3D Streets of Rage 2, 3D Gunstar Heroes and of course 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2. So is SEGA planning a ‘Third Wave’ of 3D Classics after these release?

SEGA’s Yosuke Okunari spoke to Famitsu about that and here is his response:

These three titles were put out for download overseas simply as an extension [to the existing series]. This really is the end for the second wave [of Sega 3D Classics]. Of course we want to consider the development of a third wave based on the response to this second wave, but we have no plans at this point in time. We’ll look at the big picture, that is, we’ll look at the sales trends of the physical release of the Sega 3D Classics line that went on sale last year [in Japan] as well as how the upcoming three titles perform in the global market. We’re happy to do this indefinitely if sales are good.

It pretty much seems that these latest three Genesis/Mega Drive added to Wave 2 is to test, see how they do globally and if they do well they could continue the series. I’m personally loving these re-releases, what about you guys?
