Sega Dreamcast: Collected Works teases never before seen production materials from Jet Set Radio, Shenmue and more

Sega Dreamcast: Collected Works, an upcoming book from Read-Only Memory, is the followup to SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis: Collected Works. Successfully backed on Kickstarter late last year, Read-Only Memory sent a new years update to backers and boy is it an exciting one! Read-Only Memory received a large amount of production materials from SEGA of Japan, including several never-before-seen pieces from popular Dreamcast games. Included in the haul are:

  • Game mechanic sketches, environment concepts and high end renderings for Sonic Adventure
  • The complete design document for Jet Set Radio/Jet Grind Radio, including some amazing graffiti artwork concepts
  • A very early proof of concept video for Space Channel 5
  • Character studies and production artwork for Phantasy Star Online
  • Storyboards, character designs and environment artworks for Shenmue

Read-Only Memory will spend the coming weeks sorting through all the materials and identifying pieces to include in the book, with the final cut of the book to be laid out in a few months. Also revealed is that photoshoots for the Hardware Showcase chapter of the book will be taking place in the next few weeks, featuring everything from consoles to the fishing controller to the Samba de Amigo maracas. SEGA News Bits: Jet Set Radio Evolution, A Rejected SEGA Pitch Discussion

The other day Dinosaur Games put out their Jet Set Radio Evolution Visual Proof of Concepts, showcasing what the studio wanted to do with SEGA’s IP. According to the studio, SEGA rejected the pitch without a explanation and they’ve now posted up their pitch online for fans to see. Dinosaur Games shares their Jet Set Radio Visual Proof of Concept that was rejected by SEGA (UPDATE)

The YouTube channel for the game developer Dinosaur Games shared this Jet Set Radio ‘Visual Proof of Concept’ that they created, at first it was just models but when Sony saw it at GDC 2017, they said they where interested in seeing it in motion. This is the concept they created. The issue happen when they sent the video to SEGA to approve, according to them, SEGA rejected it. Here is what they posted in the description of the video:

“We made this Visual Proof of Concept after Sony expressed interest in seeing the characters in motion at GDC 2017. We spent a week animating and building the city for this presentation which was ultimately turned down by Sega.”

As for this being a ‘brand new Jet Set Radio‘, I have a few issues with what this Visual Proof of Concept showed. I’m not a huge fan of the ‘light’ outlines around the characters, the over use of green and how slow the speed feels. Though I do feel they nailed a lot of the presentation and ideas from both Jet Set Radio and Jet Set Radio Future. What are you’re thoughts on this ‘Visual Proof of Concept’ by the team?

Jet Set Radio 6″ Beat action figure now available to pre-order

We’ve been following this figure for what feels like over a year, and while other figures revealed around the same time released months ago, this one remained elusive. Thankfully, we can now report that the long awaited – and for a time presumed cancelled – Jet Set Radio Beat action figure is now available for pre-order! The second in the Game Classics series, which featured Arthur of Ghosts ‘n Goblins fame previously, Beat sports a blocky look which perfectly matches the Dreamcast Jet Set Radio graphics (minus, of course, the cel shaded outline).

Beat comes with a spray can and two sets of hands, measures about 6″ tall and releases this December with a retail price of 7,538 yen. Amiami has the figure for 15% off at 6,390 yen (about $57) and if you pre-order the Space Channel 5 Ulala figure you can combine orders to save on shipping.

SEGA’s mobile game War Pirates launches globally

SEGA’s War Pirates, a mobile game that was out in select countries back in August of last year, is now being released globally. The game peaked our intention when we found out that it was created by Masayoshi Kikuchi of Jet Set Radio and Yakuza fame. War Pirates features 14 maps, over 300 quests, over 20 ships, and over 230 pirate characters to unlock.

War Pirates also features a real-time PVP battle mode which looks pretty interesting. According to the game’s press release they are also promising a Guild vs Guild update later this year. You can check out War Pirates on Twitter and Facebook.

Steam Sale: Dreamcast Collection Titles $1.99 Each

Do you need a handy, cheap Black Friday game gift, or perhaps want to finally jump into some classics for a paltry amount? Then SEGA has the deal for you. Until November 28th, every title under the “Dreamcast Collection” bundle, which includes Crazy Taxi, NiGHTS Into Dreams…, Jet Set Radio, SEGA Bass Fishing, Space Channel 5: Part 2, and Sonic Adventure DX are all available for a staggering $1.99 USD each. All of these games are priced at $7.99 normally, and normally buying them all together would be at least thirty dollars. That’s about an eighteen dollar difference for all of them.

Please note that the bundle itself is not discounted, and that Sonic Adventure 2, another Dreamcast classic released alongside NiGHTS and JSR, is not included in this sale. You will have to buy each game individually to make use of the discounts. So get on it, already!

SEGA Memories: The Day the HD Stood Strong

Imagine growing up with a family who got you your first video game system, even though they have little to no knowledge of what video games are. That may sound like most of you, but for those that didn’t have that lovely experience, nine times out of ten you hoped that you got the one game system you wanted to get or you relied on friends to have the ones you didn’t have. And somehow, unfortunately, my neighborhood was all Nintendo territory.

Let’s fast forward to early 2012; I started to branch out in my gaming endeavors. I got an Xbox 360 a year before and third-party titles started to become my new favorite (I went crazy over all of the Suda51 games). Then one fateful spring morning, it was announced that three classic Sega titles were coming to the 360 and PS3 later on in the year. And while I already spoiled myself silly over the Gamecube port of Sonic Adventure 2, the other two games were ones that I was most excited about than any other game of that year: NiGHTS into Dreams and Jet Set Radio. Since there were no Sonic games coming out that year, SEGA gave us three remastered HD titles to melt over. And while some have already played these gems, this was an exciting and memorable moment for me in a time when people thought the world was going to end.

Rumor: SEGA Blast Heroes a new mobile SRPG gets leaked

According to the mobile game website PocketGamer there is a new mobile game by SEGA, which features classic game IPs. Not only that, mobile ads for SEGA Blast Heroes (the games name) have been popping up. The ads describe the title as a ‘strategy RPG’. The Facebook page behind the ads leads to a page called ‘SEGA Mobile’ which has a bit over 150 likes at he moment. If you click to download the app from the ad, it takes you to StoreMaven, which is a service to help test upcoming app store conversion rates.

Below are some screenshots of the supposed game called SEGA Blast Heroes. Of course, it looks like it would play like Chain Chronicle. Just looking at the screenshots leaked so far I see Samba De Amigo, Space Channel 5, Sakura Wars, Valkyria Chronicles, Jet Set Radio, Wonder Boy, Alex Kidd, and a lot of unknowns populating the screens. It also seems that you will be fighting generic looking villains, which is a bummer.

This game doesn’t surprise me considering SEGA’s mobile division put out a survey asking fans about classic SEGA franchises. What are your thoughts on the rumor? Would you play SEGA Blast Heroes?

Jet Set Radio HD available on Xbox One via backward compatibility

JetSetRadioHDXboneJet Set Radio is the newest game to join the Xbox One family thanks to Microsoft’s 360 backwards compatibility. The game was released back in 2012 on the Xbox 360 and if you bought it you can now play it on your shiny new Xbox One.

Its nice that Jet Set Radio is technically available on a new platform, makes me hope that maybe SEGA hasn’t given up on the brand. I know fans haven’t, since Jet Set Radio Future HD re-release is hot in demand on social media sites. Maybe Microsoft will start backwards compatibility program with original Xbox titles? I wish!

7th Dragon III Code: VFD pays homage to Jet Set Radio

7thdragonjet.jpgSEGA’s upcoming Nintendo 3DS game 7th Dragon III Code: VFD will launch this summer, launch copies of the game will come with an art book. It seems fans paid close attention to the character art that has been release as a Siliconera reader has pointed out that the male Agent Class in the game has a Jet Set Radio Future themed shirt. Look closely, you see it? Its the Jet Soul symbol!

Miwa Shirow, the character designer for 7th Dragon III Code: VFD is a huge fan of SEGA’s Jet Set Radio franchise and has stated that the goal of the Agent Class is to be “street-wise youth” type of design. The Male Agent’s internal name is actually “Jet” as well, if you needed more to tie it to Jet Set Radio.

That isn’t the only reference to a classic SEGA franchise, if you look at the buttons on his chest there is a symbol from Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Oratori Tangram. Pretty neat stuff.  7th Dragon III Code: VFD hits American store shelves this summer, pre-order it and secure your launch day edition art book!
