New showcase trailer for SEGA Genesis Mini revealed

SEGA of America’s Youtube channel released a short showcase video or the upcoming SEGA Genesis Mini, which is slated to release next month. In the video it opens with a little “blast from the past”, with 90’s Claymation Sonic from the classic Japanese commercial with the “SEGAAAA” jingle accompanying it. It follows up with a brief showing of the size difference between the original & the mini and what games are to come, including Tetris and Darius. The latter also brings it its’ first North American release, although it is an in-house port by M2 and SEGA of Japan since it was an arcade cabinet originally.

SEGAbits at E3 2019: SEGA Genesis Mini Hands On Preview

In 1989, the SEGA Genesis was released in North America (in 1989 as the Mega Drive in Japan) bundled with the arcade classic Altered Beast and later Sonic the Hedgehog. The console was known for it’s blast processing capabilities and even rivaled the Super Nintendo during the console wars, a term by journalist & historians back in the day. Contributing to SEGA Genesis success were its library of arcade game ports, the popularity of Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog series, iconic sports franchises, and marketing that positioned the system as the cool console for adolescents.

Fast forward towards today, the console had been replicated by AtGames with over 80 built in games but was met with negative reception by gaming enthusiast and SEGA fans who grew up with the console most being due to its frame rate drops and sound issues. In 2018, SEGA announced their very own replica console called the SEGA Genesis Mini at SEGA Fes 2018 with help from M2 known for doing numerous ports of classic SEGA video games on several consoles. At E3, we managed to get our hands-on preview on the Genesis Mini. Does it live up to it’s expectations? Find out our thoughts on the miniature console after the break.

SEGA Mega Drive Mini in Asia gets Sword of Vermillion and OutRun 2019 as exclusives

SEGA will also be selling the SEGA Mega Drive Mini in Asia, they promised the same amount of games as the rest of the regions. 40 games. SEGA is only planning on selling the units as one SKU in that area with two controllers. So far Japan is the only place to have a cheaper, single controller bundle.

Here are the games announced for the SEGA Mega Drive Mini Asian version will have a lot of the games found in the Japanese version including Space Harrier II, Wrestleball, Shining Force, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Gunstar Heroes, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Puyo Puyo Tsu, and Comix Zone. The two exclusives (so far) to the Asian version are Sword of Vermilion and OutRun 2019.

Yeah, I didn’t expect OutRun 2019 to be included in this collection. Very meta, considering its coming out this year… in 2019. The future is now!

SEGA Genesis Mini details revealed, price and first ten games announced

Yesterday, SEGA FES revealed the SEGA Mega Drive Mini. Today, SEGA of America and SEGA Europe revealed their versions of the plug and play console. Like the Japanese version, the console will include 40 games. While Japan has two versions, one with one controller and another with two controllers, the western versions will include two controllers with price points of $79.99/£69.99/€79.99 and a worldwide release date of September 19, 2019.

We have learned since the SEGA FES presentation that emulation is handled my M2, of SEGA AGES and 3D Classics fame, and the menu music will be created by Yuzo Koshiro!

Unfortunately, unlike the Japanese version the western releases will not feature the superior six-button pad. Instead the original three button pads will be included. If I had to guess, SEGA is hoping fans will buy the recently released officially licensed Retro-Bit controllers (should they work with the plug and play console).
