A look at Virtua Fighter ‘No Matter the Cost’ fan tournament

Hi SEGAbits readers! Kori-Maru here! Giving you all another event report covering a a fan dedicated Virtua Fighter ‘No Matter the Cost’  tournament which is being hosted by NWO and VFDC. The event featured many Virtua Fighter iterations starting from Virtua Fighter 2 through Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown spanning over three days. While Virtua Fighter has a small tournament scene in the West, fans of the series continue to show strong support for SEGA’s elite fighting game franchise.

Prizes were given out for each tournament and raffle giveaways included rare items such as Japanese Virtua Fighter player BunBunMaru’s jacket, Virtua Fighter 10th Anniversary for PlayStation 2, a copy of Yakuza 6, and a flight ticket to EVO Japan 2018 as the grand prize. Pretty good haul for a fan ran tournament.

Check out SSFC2016’s Virtua Fighter 3 tournament

A Virtua Fighter 3 tournament in 2016? Not surprising, this Virtua Fighter 3 tournament was held in Japan during SSFC2016 which is a multi-game tournament that likes to showcase unique fighting games including unreleased titles. They even held showcase tournaments for games like Project Justice, Kenju, and many more. Personally I love when people showcase older forgotten fighting games in these types of ways, very fun to see.

It makes sense that they would use Virtua Fighter 3, since it is that one last title that was still comparable to the first two games before the big leap in Virtua Fighter 4. What is your general opinion of this Virtua Fighter 3 tournament? Should they have showcased a more underrated SEGA fighting game?

NYGX hosting Virtua Fighter tournaments this upcoming August

Even though Virtua Fighter franchise has lost its popularity in the West through recent years, doesn’t mean places like New York Cities’ NextLevel will allow it to go unnoticed. From August 14th through the 16th NYGX will be hosting a array of Virtua Fighter tournaments.

What games are on the bill? So far:

  • Virtua Fighter 3
  • Virtua Fighter 4: Final Tune
  • Virtua Fighter 5R
  • Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown

How many of you guys play Virtua Fighter competitively and want to go to this? Should be a interesting event, definitely excited to see some new Virtua Fighter 4 matches.

Not only do they have one of the most vast libraries, but they also revolutionized gaming in general multiple times over the past decades. Let’s look at the developer that popularized sprite-scaling in the 80s, gave us modern 3D with their Virtua series and created one of the most expensive games ever as we walk through their legacy.

Don’t forget to join us all month long while we talk more about SEGA AM2 and all their legendary franchises.
