Title: The 'what do you do for a living?' thread.
Post by: Monkeroony on April 22, 2010, 12:22:22 pm
I know a few people have mentioned what they do for a job (Emmett and Barry in particular) but I am curious to see how diverse a mix Sega fans are.

I design newspages for a number of local newspapers (under one group), although it is vaguely related to my degree course, in that, I do a fair amount of photoshop work and the rest of the job is fairly creative; I really would like to move more into media editing, such as film and sound editing.

I have done some freelance sound editing for the South African version of Buzz on PS3 but I don't know if it ever got released.

Apart from my main job I have done studio portaiture editing freelance work for my girlfriend when her job is busy (hopefully more soon as she starts her own business in less than two weeks)
and some product photography images that were used in the independant and a couple of glossy magazines.

So what do you guys do all day?

I procrastinate, mostly. On my free time I pretend I study computer engineering. It's pretty intense.

I am a surveyor and energy assessor, but I also run my own estate agency and partnership in several restaurants.

I basically tell people how to build houses and tell them the best way to insulate their homes or make it more energy efficient as well as selling them or renting them for them.

Also George wants to bang my secretary.

Aki:  That's interesting.  Energy Efficiency is a big deal here, since we can have -50 degree temperature weather in the Winter with our homes heated by oil.

I do Real Estate here in Fairbanks, AK.  I have a Broker's license (which would allow me to open my own Brokerage), I am a Realtor for the REMAX here.  I also do property management, but only on the buildings I own personally, and one for my brother who decided to move away when his wife didn't want to come to Alaska.

I'm an engineer, that means I solve problems.

Actually I am not certain what I would consider the title of my profession, but I guess you can say I am a sidekick to an independent contractor who does work on everything from homes to aircrafts. I also work on art and proposal designs/concepts for all kinds of things.

In the future I want to become a game designer or a cartoonist, or even a photographer.

Yeah, I am pretty boring.

Well here it has become a big deal in the UK, but only due to the European Union saying all member states have to have something to deal with climate change and what I do is basically compile a report that all properties must have whenever they wish to sell or rent a property detailing and recommending (The owner doesn't actually have to go through with it) what they can do to push down their energy bills and in particular their combon emission.

Pretty much go from recommending energy efficient light bulbs to changing their gas boiler.

I know I should use energy saving lightbulbs but they take too long to get bright enough, that and most the lights in my apartment are halogen bulbs.

Pretty interesting mix, everyone seems to be pretty creative which is pretty awesome.

Why wouldn't you want to move to Alaska, from what I've seen it looks pretty cool.
( I'm from Nottingham, where the poor rob the poor and keep it for themselves)

EVEN MORE SRZSLY I'm looking for another job at the moment, and I'm also at uni doing a Masters in Creative Writing, which is kinda funny considering I never did a Bachelor's in Creative Writing.

I teach elementary and junior high level English at some public schools in Japan right now. It isn't the kind of job I see myself doing much longer. This will be my third year and quite possibly my last if I can get my act together and really work hard to find a better paying job. I'd prefer to return to California and work in my home town, but I live where the work is. Right now work happens to be in Japan.

Still in college trying to finish my Software Engeneering. Only 2 classes left and the final college project. To get my Bacherolate degree.

I'm trying to work with a e-commerce CMS solution for a company that needs a website for customers to purchase their items.

A bit of a pain in the neck, but as long as my report is in perfect shape, I should finish this project.

But can I be honest? I wish had found a job after finishing High School first then went to College. Not waste 5 years of my life and still not have any working experience.

The only thing remotely close to a job I had was being my dad's errand boy/secretary, but that was before he retired.

@Upsidedown Fuji

You know, if things worked out differently I would also consider teaching english at a private institution.

Aki:  I just went through an energy rebate program where I upgraded my house and got $7000 back from the State.  I put blown-in cellulose insulation in the attic, replaced the garage door with a new vinyl one, replaced the front door, put in 2 triple-pane windows, a fuel economizer on the boiler, changed out the fans with humidistat-controlled ones, and rigid-foam insulation around the concrete-block perimeter of the garage.

Fuji:  Is that the Jet program?  I lived in Japan for 3 months and went to Edmonds Community College Japan Campus in Kobe.  I was there in 1995 during the Earthquake.  I almost considered doing the Jet program after I came back, but then I met the person who is now my wife.  It wouldn't have been cool to drag her to Japan, since she was in graduate school to be a therapist.

Book artist, (two published so far but both books suck!)
Attempting to write my own book (very slowly)

and looking into other forms of 'art' like sculpting and making 'things' out of wood, clay maybe cards... etc... because theres not a lot f work for what i do in the island.

Really I'm at that 'not sure what i want to do' cross road where I'm trying lots of things but I want to 'create' things.

Hmm

Right so, im currently at college, doing film production... i make music videos etc for local bands, recently did some work with Coca Cola and the young business person of the year awards etc. going to university in September two years later then most people my age (I did two college courses in Media Production and Media Studies)

Besides that, I work in a clothes shop, we sell clothes to fat women and old women, occasionally fat old women.

on the odd occasion (very odd) I help at a friends comedy bar... basically being a bridge between comedy acts and taking the piss out of men twice my size and age.

And I write film reviews for numerous sites and a college paper type thing, I also run the website for my current college course, moderate the forum on the site and help the first year students get to know people who can help them in there videos etc..

Besides that, I sit on my bum watch movies and eat nachos... oh, and occasionally come on the internet to talk about sex.

I wouldn't worry about the age thing, I was 19 When I started and there were people aged mid 20's up to 70 (Although George was the only 70 year old!) on my course.

What course are you looking at doing?
I did Contemporary Lens Media which is basically Photography, Video and Animation. We did very little film studying however, apart from the obligatory Warhol films and of course Dali's Un Chien Andalou

I am happy to report that I got a job in a company that deals with Wine exports, they also do web design as another side of their bussiness(that is, the export company deals with a lot of wine producers who also want a website to show their products, so that's where I come in).
The company largely deals with exporting wine(white and red) to good ol'USA(Iowa seems to be our biggest customer) and Poland.
I'm currently working as a web administrator(updating the company's main website), web designer and warehouse clerk (they're short on staff, so obviously somebody's got to shuffle those pallets and prepare them for dispatch).

I've been doing it for almost a month now... and it feels great!

Funny how it works, what I was mostly afraid of, turned out to be the thing that filled that personal void I've felt for years since I started college.

Nice one! I'm glad you found something you like.

I'm still doing part time gardening as my main job... Not making a whole lot.

I'm doing a new art for someone’s 'book of rhymes' which I’m doing very slowly because I'm not very enthused about it.

Also I've finished the first draft of the children’s/young adult fiction book I want to write and now the long slow process of fixing my many spelling/grammatical errors and tarting it up. Then finally, I'll do the artwork.

^Glad to hear you are loving your job!

And speaking of which, I now have a job I really enjoy as well. For the last 6 months or so I've been on the buying team for the Video Game department of a major retailer as a Merchandise Assistant/Co-ordinator.

So yeah, while it's pretty demanding work, it's also very interesting and i'm working with a product I already have a great interest in and with some great people.

I work at a Salvation Army doing all the bull crap work. That includes moving around furniture, dealing with trash all day long, putting things into storage/taking things out of storage and a load of other crap that I don't feel like going into details about. It's actually a tough job but I've grown use to it. Also classic video games come in a lot which I can get at a very cheap price. Example stack of N64 games for a dollar, DC in the box with a stack of games for like 5 bucks.

Work at post company. Nothign special really. thousands of letters come out of lots of machines next to eacht other, dependant on the city and postal codes, and I put them in a box. When the box fills up, I put it on a wagon, replace a new box in it's place and repeat till the wagon fills too. It pays good and makes it possible for me to buy stuff :P

Oh, boy, last week we finished the biggest shipment of wine to one of our customers in Poland. About 4 pallets with 100 boxes each. And we had to make sure we'd stick the official Polish Ministry of Commerce sticker on every single bottle of every single box.

Fun fact: In the US, it doesn't matter where the imported good comes from, it must have a label in english.

And I finished my first professional web programming assignment.

The second job starts tomorrow.

Bump, I was unemployed for the past two years but now I book keep for my Dad's Pallet Manufacturing company, it's boring as all get out. I did manage to land a IT job for a real estate office, it pays very well (in the neighborhood of $45 a hour) but it's only a few hours a month to maintain all their computers and crap since the real estate agents think it's a great idea to install random shit on the comps. Either way, easy work.

I was thinking of starting a taco stand, and I have been writing a couple books for a bit now. Doubt those will go anywhere though. Just being realistic of course, but if they do, fantastic.

Whaaa...? Anyway, my contract got officially renewed 2 weeks ago and August is generally a very low key month, me and the boss are working on a lot of web projects right now.
The corporate website had to be taken down, because there was a security breach (how I have come to hate that little thing called SQL Local File Injection), right now all we have is a nice placeholder image will we do our thing behind the control panel.

We will get back to that as soon as we finish the other assignments.

Yeah I know, he said the next lowest quote was $80 a hour so I figured what the hell. My cousin is a legit Computer Scientist, but through college did freelance IT work and said the normal rate he charged was the 30-50 range depending on what they wanted. I've heard of legit people charging up to $120 though. Shocking.

My job can be quite interesting sometimes, in the same week, I can be managing an entire backoffice for a couple of hours, then a few hours later I'm working through a shipment that has to be done by Friday. It kinda keeps me on edge, because I'm never stuck for too long doing one thing.

And it helped a lot. I sleep better, don't eat as much junk food as I used too and I lost a lot of weight (I was wearing pants the equivalent of a size 14 and I've dropped two sizes). Shame about my hair loss, seems to be the curse of any software engineer.

max_candy: I took the route you didnt take, just went right to work and still no real traction on getting a degree.  Not sure what comes out better to be honest, I see a mix of both in the tech world, but having a degree certainly improves the range of options you have if your employer is picky.

I work as a datacenter technician at a local datacenter at the moment, but hope to make specifically web hosting, or some type of hosted services, my full time career.  I dont really program save for some Python and PHP, and markup for web.  I mainly am a systems and network guy.

Well, statiscally it's difficult to handle a college degree and a job at the same time. I'm one class away from getting a degree in software engeneering. Having said that, even after finishing college, it still won't be easy.

And yeah, I'm somewhere along those lines with many of the Joomla-based web projects I'm assigned, other than a little bit of PHP, MySQL and mostly CSS, I barely touch any other code whatsoever. I feel like I wasted my time learning C#.

Have I not gloated posted here yet?

I am a graphic designer for a local University. Specifically, a private for-profit company that runs the Online Learning portion of the school. Basically, we rope in the students and provide the tools, the school takes in the students and hooks the teachers up to the online interface.

I enjoy it, we have our ups and downs. Business is steady, and growing, but for a stretch of a year things were sort of blah. My boss wasn't around and my boss's boss didn't get things done. But restructuring led to a new boss's boss who doesn't like my boss, and he listens to us as designers much more and gets things done super quick.

It's in-house stuff, so the imagery and brand doesn't change as much as an ad agency, but it is much more stable than an agency and they do profit sharing, so ca-ching!

I also do freelance stuff, but this year has been rather dry. Usually I do DVD cover designs for AMC and Showtime and print design for a managers association's yearly conferences.

Two of my Showtime DVD designs are still for sale online. Buy them so they hire me to make more: http://showtime.seenon.com/?v=showtime_dvds_dvds&spid=1178 (http://showtime.seenon.com/?v=showtime_dvds_dvds&spid=1178)

I don't know if I've ever replied here..

I'm an university student of Physics Engineering.
I study at Faculdade Ciencias e Tecnologia - Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

It's hard. Very hard.
It has been going well up until now, though this semester is about to kick me in the balls.
I'm not a very good "student", but I get steady grades with relative ease. I just love to learn stuff, but there is so much to do and worry over that I usually end up rushing through the courses.

This week is what I usually call a Death Week. I had a mammoth presentation that went well, have 3 tests (one critical), and have to design a water pump due next Wednesday.

It's rewarding to succeed, but sometimes it sucks me in and makes me gloomy.
But today I'm extremely confident, and tomorrow I will NAIL those motherfuckers. :)

I wonder what are the ups and downs of working as a self-employed man versus working under someone else in a company...
