Title: Sports
Post by: Spock on June 11, 2014, 05:35:37 pm
I just wanted an all purpose sports thread. I will start out with a couple of questions. Is anyone else exited about the World Cup? Does anyone know where the U.S. Open golf tournament will be held?

Golf is NOT a sport.

Football (or soccer) is being discussed in this thread:

http://segabits.com/forums/index.php?topic=2712.0 (http://segabits.com/forums/index.php?topic=2712.0)

Would that not include The World Cup?

Golf is a sport.

I don't know much about golf though. Been watching the NBA and NHL finals! NHL is a massacre, but NBA is pretty intense right now

Golf is a sport. It's a competitive physical activity. Bowling is also a sport. They are also my two favorite sports because you don't have to touch people or get hurt.

I think I can agree with you, exept for one thing. You can get hurt while bowling. Have you seen the movie Kingpin? That guy had his hand chopped off in the ball return. Plus, I think you can drop the ball on your foot, if you are not too careful.

In your defense, I must say that golf involves little activity. Usually just a lot of elderly overweight people that ride golf carts to their destination. No running is involved; however, golf actually has it's own channel and it has been considered for a spot in the summer olympics> I think that qualifies as a sport.

BTW, when is the kings game in the NHL? Is it this weekend? I just want to watch it on tv.

I did not think you would be back on segabits, pcm92. I miss all of your humorous posts. I do have to disagree with you on this one. Golf is not or has never been part of the olympics. There are some people who are not overweight or old that play golf, even though it's not my type of game. It's the most ridiculous game (if you call it that) in the world. It used to be open to only protestants, and now it is only open to people with tacky clothing.

About baseball, I must admit that I am a Braves fan. Sorry JohnOfRage.

That is also a stereotype of golfers. I don't wear tacky clothes. I'm not overweight. I am not really that old. I go to the driving range every week. No. It's not the most ridiculous SPORT, - not game - I think that belongs to curling. I'm sure a lot of people would disagree with that too. You're initial debate was that this thread should have never been made. You just posted something about one of your favorite baseball teams.Let's just get back to the topic of who is liking which sport and which team is better. Ok?

Curling is an olympic sport. Golf is not. I like curling. I also like this thread. I never said this thread was horrible. I was just suggesting that football was being discussed in another thread and that I was not sure if golf was actually a sport or not. I will agree with you that both hockey and baseball are great sports. I know it was just an opinion. Saying that curling is a ridiculous sport, is not true though. Perhaps you just thought it was rather unusual. It is very similar to a game of shuffleboard. Everyone likes that game, right?

I know this. A friend of mine used to be a professional competitive dancer. It was freaking insane. But I still think it was pretty stupid to be considered a "sport"..
Olympic diving is a sport. But sports that are subjective to what the judges think of your performance tick me off.

You are right. There are plenty of games that some consider a sport that are not sports. There is something that I disagree with you about though. If competitions that have judges were not sports, then that cancels out a lot of games as sports. Aerobatics, archery, arm wrestling, badminton, canoeing, cheerleading, cricket, dancing, diving, dodgeball, figure skating, fishing, martial arts, pickleball, pole vaulting, roller derby, skateboarding, skiing, snowboarding, surfing, swimming, water polo, and ultimate frisbee should no longer be sports according to you.

For what it's worth, I think most tennis fans (0.001% of people in the U.K. and U.S. that are tennis fans) wanted Federer to win. You should just give up on this thread. No one wants to post anything about sports unless it is the World Cup. Who cares about tennis?

I find it difficult to understand why people are offended by certain team names in baseball. What's wrong with the reds or the nickerbackers? Do these team names actually offend anyone? They have had these baseball team names for more than fifty years. In fact, the reds were the first professional baseball team.

Wait... if the reds were the first professional baseball team, then who did they play?

New York's 2-1 overtime win against Washington on Wednesday night was the Rangers' fifth victory in seven home playoffs games this year. They also improved to 7-0 at home in Game 7. Although I don't like that much how the new coach is handling the things inside, I respect the results and that 6-1 match with Paraguay.

Messi can't do a goal but dear Lord, his control, pass and assistances are gold material.

Obviously, with this winning streak we are #1 in the FIFA Top list (although I despise that ******* position table).

I hope for the best with Chile in the final match. We can do it, my people.

N.B: Chile didn't win any single Copa America in their history, even Bolivia have one. Prepare for the memes xD

If their people weren't starving to death, yes (although China was about 15 medals short of the US in 2012). Why do you think Russia also gets a lot of medals as well?
If Europe competed as a single team, we would have the combined medals of about 50 countries (including Russia).

In fact, if we combine the medals from just the European countries in the top 10 (6 countries), we instantly surpass the US by 170 medals. So I could argue that you're not even that good at the olympics. You should be massively crushing everyone.

Even more revealing is when we compare Medals per capita, where the US shows up in a sloppy 48th place (27th if we only count Gold). Which means that, in porportion, there are 47 more successful nations in front of you.

If that were the case then wouldn't Russia also have trouble in the Olympics? If starvation and poverty had anything to do with it then Russia and China would hardly have any medals at all. The main reason why China was so close to beating us in 2012 was because they can compete in a lot more events than we can. Dude, they have 1 billion more people than we do. Also, if you want to argue based on Continents, you might as well give us Canada's medal count then.

I'm curious to know which top 6 nations you're referring to when you're stating that they'll surpass the US alone.

The point is, population plays a role, but not the #1 role. You can try to discredit this Nation as much as you want, but give it when it's due. This Country has endured a lot, and if there's anything that irks me, it's when people try to take away from what this Country has accomplished in half of the amount of time other Nations have been around.

Not to get all nationalist in here, but you only exist as the country you are today because 500 years ago we portuguese found the place. Quite the achievement I think..

And I'm not descrediting USA at all. I just don't think you are as good as you believe.

Don't forget each of your states is big enough to be it's own country. And you have 50 of them.

The top 6 nations were Italy, England, Russia, Germany, Hungary, France.

Just look at the medal per capita ratios to understand my point.

Also, as I said, USA is the best at basketball. But since you focus all your young talent on climbing to the NFL, you are severely lacking at other sports.

We exist because we fought the English for our Independence. =)

In regards to population, i still don't think that has everything to do with it. And i will always go back to China and India in that regards. Poverty or not, if all it took was having a shit ton of people then they should've easily surpassed us by now.

Although, i will agree that basketball is the most popular sport in the Country, our other sport programs have been growing tremendously. Hockey is at an all time high in attendance records across the Country and the MLS has expanded by 2 teams just this year. Not to mention they will be adding 2 more by 2018. Soccer isn't a popular sport here, but the talent pool is growing and some day i think we'll have a chance at World Cup.

Speaking of World Cup, only 8 teams have won it and no offense, but Portugal isn't one of them. For a Nation like ours that doesn't have a huge talent pool in that regard, we have at least made it to 3rd place.

Agree do disagree on the populational aspect, but ok.

"our other sport programs have been growing tremendously"
But that's exacly the point isn't it? It's all american (and canadian) sports. It's easy to be the best at baseball and american football when no one else is playing it.
Ice Hockey it's Canada and Russia (although the NHL is obviously the best league there is, paise America), Rugby is nonexistant (thanks NFL.), Soccer is......developing... for the past 30 years.
Even in motorsports you don't have anyone on the F1 because all of your talent is concentrated on Nascar and Indy.

"the MLS has expanded by 2 teams just this year"
Yet, it is still using a league format that Portugal abandoned in 1934 (no joke). The league is played from Spring to Autumn (intead of the standard 100 year old convention of Autumn to Spring). And the football isn't quite that good. Although the teams swim in cash, the competitive levels are well bellow Europe's main leagues.

Not only that, Portugal (which isn't even one of the best leagues) has 156 teams in national competition, USA has 91.
It's best to have a sturdy league system to support your best teams, rather than shoving them all in the MLS. How is it possible for a soccer league to not have relegation. What are bottom teams fighting for then? It's extremely non-competitive.

"Speaking of World Cup, only 8 teams have won it and no offense, but Portugal isn't one of them. For a Nation like ours that doesn't have a huge talent pool in that regard, we have at least made it to 3rd place."
So have we (and another 4th place), and we have 3% of your population.

We also have been european club champions 4 times, world club champions twice (Porto), had 3 players considered best in the world at their time (Eusebio, Figo, Ronaldo), one goalkeeper as well (Vitor Baia), most titled soccer president in the world (Pinto da Costa, 58 titles).

We have achieved a lot for a small country, you have achieved very little for such a huge country.

"Our US Women's just won and broke the curse, mang.."
Because you guys (thankfully) bet your female talent on soccer. Do the same with men talent and you'll be World Champions in no time.

Ice Hockey is definitely a Canadian and American sport, i would say that Russia is in 3rd place at this point. The KHL is a joke of a League in Comparison by the NHL, which has 23 Teams in the US alone. Did you watch the 2014 Winter Olympics where we beat Russia in a shootout? One of the best showcases of American Hockey in recent memory. Our youth hockey program is only getting better and 2 of the top 5 forwards in the world are American. Need i also remind you of the 'Miracle on Ice' one of the greatest achievements in American Hockey History.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_on_Ice (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_on_Ice)

You know, i hear this a lot and i do agree to some extent, but it's not as far off as most people make it seem. Although this isn't a huge stretch of an example. The New York Red Bulls from the MLS just whooped on Chelsea a few weeks ago, 4-2. I know that doesn't give an overall view of what standards both leagues hold, but i think the MLS is on it's way. And with the number of big names like Villa, Drogba, and Lampard making their way over, it's only growing excitement here for fubol.

"So have we (and another 4th place), and we have 3% of your population."

I understand this, but when your #1 sport is futbol, i have higher expectations. We don't concentrate all of our efforts on Soccer, not even close, yet we've managed 3rd place. When your culture lives and breathes Soccer, i'd expect them to have a World Cup by now.

Not disrespect to your Country, whatsoever. To have as much success as you have in Soccer, being such a small Nation, it's commendable.

Too much going on in here though, we should probably cut it back, haha.. I don't think we'll agree on a whole lot at this point.

Speaking on the MLS, I don't think using friendlies is a fair indication, New York Red Bulls also outdid us (Arsenal) a few years back but at the top of our game we could destroy them 8 out 10 times (So could Chelsea too.) But I do agree that the MLS has made massive strides forward, ten years ago you'd probably be similar levels to Scotland but now above them.

You should really put in relegation though, it makes a season a lot more exciting and bottom teams have more reason to fight at the end if their stake in the league is on the line. Also;

Top 5 in the US for sure:

1. American Footbal
2. Basketball
3. Baseball
4. Hockey
5. Soccer

From most to least popular, imo.

Unless the US has to be cheap, don't be cheap. Paying money for the right type of coach will bring you success. That being said, improving the ground work for your team is more important than a coach, getting more kids into football at the grass root level will help immensely.

It's a really simple concept but I'll explain it how we have it in the England rather than Portugal or Scotland. The bottom 3 teams in our league are relegated (Lowest points total) into the lower league. Now in the lower league, position 1 and 2 automatically gets promoted to the upper division whilst position 3, 4, 5 and 6 face off against each other at our national stadium (It's a fun day out for the fans of the team too) obvious heartache for the team who losses but it means that the bottom teams will give their all even in the closing weeks of the league season.

I don't think we have to be cheap, but i think that's something that has been brought up a number of times. While i do like what Klinsmann has done with our youth program, i think he's done what he can with this Team, it's time for him to move on. Our performance at the Gold Cup solidifies that statement for me. And if we lose to Mexico in October for the Confederations Cup Tournament, i know he'll lose his job.

Hmm.. It sounds interesting. So you guys have 2 division with a lower and upper league? So you sort of have to work harder to stay in the upper division in a sense?

Tottenham is our local rival (Well, as much as you can call it that, it's been like 19 years since they finished above us, its pretty one sided) and Chelsea is our title rival. What makes Chelsea harder to stand though is how classless they are, pretty much the Activision of football teams!

Funfact, Arsenal's manager Wenger and Chelsea's manager Mourinho hate each others' guts and started off from when their manager called Wenger a voyeur, since then it's been a bitter feud. Infact he completely blanked his handshake.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7DLJffmyHI

Liverpool is a tragic case, their most recent chance at winning the league title was in 2013. They defeated one of their title rivals, Manchester City, with their captain Steven Gerrard delivering a rousing pre-game speech, saying "THIS DOES NOT FUCKING SLIP"  they beat City and it looked like the title was theirs.

Then Gerrard literally slipped up the following game allowing the opposition to score and their title challenge feel apart.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i26gslXjfjU

They also lost the league title to Arsenal back in 1989 in a dramatic fashion. We had to beat them 2-0 at their home ground, it looked like the title was going to be retained by them, last minute our player charged through the midfield and scored the second goal and we won the league :P

I have missed discussing Football with you Aki-san! (This is the only place where I actually talk about Fusbol).

Thanks, although it was an awful week! Haha!

My brother is doing the same, and we kind of mock the Manager and his "Philosophies" [sic].

I think you have a chance this year to do one over United and City (I think there are a few problems for Arsenal but nothing too much amiss).

As long as you use Cech and not the other guy (to which is why you likely lost the Champions League game last night. My condolences), I think you'll win a few points to teams you may lose to.

I am somewhat excited for the Sevilla game as I enjoyed the Juve game despite losing (I collect Scarves on my visits now), although Borussia Munchengladbach are the team to beat tonight (we consider them to be our rivals despite losing to them a number of times).

Is that the El Classico game? I don't think I've caught even one match of that. (usually on at a time I am busy)

Predictions for me for the Prem and Cups:

Premier League:

Manchester City (although I am a pessimist and think we screw ourselves over at the final hurdle)

2nd Chelsea
3rd Arsenal
4th Man United (pretty much Status Quo)

League Cup:

Everton (have an odd feeling they'll win it)

Runners Up: Arsenal (probably the most likely)

FA Cup: Man United (I think they'll go all out to not make Arsenal win a thrid consecutive time)

Champions League:

Borussia...just kidding.

Probably Bayern Munich.

Europa League:

Monaco (I have a feeling they'll be the first French side in ages to win it)

Super Cup:

Bayern Munich vs Monaco.

For the Euro 2016 Tournament, I think Germany will win it sadly. (I want England to win at least something in my miserable life).

There's my predictions anyhow!

What? Clemson wouldn't stand a chance against Ohio. If that's your favorite team, that's fine. Just saying we will soon find out who the real winner of NCAA football is this year. I'll give you a hint. Ohio.

Ohio won last year, so I imagine the officials will try to make them go farther from their home for the championship bowl this year. That way they have more chance of losing? I really don't know how that works.

You mean the Chelsea struggling remark? I don't think their scenario has changed as far as I know. So "are" is still relevant.

I am also sure that winners tend to win important and unimportant games, something that Chelsea has forgotten to do. :P

Really? I've never actually been to a hockey game, but I am a very big fan. I watch it on the television almost every time one of my favorite teams play. The Kings are ok. It's too bad they lost against the Carolina Hurricanes though. It could be possible for the Kings to win their next game. I'm not completely sure about it. I don't really follow them very closely. You'll love your first game, there's nothing like being there live.

I live 1 hour north of LA, i've had season tickets for a few years now. We've been a pretty solid team for a few years with the exception of last year. A lot of off ice issue led to us missing the Playoffs, but we're #1 in our division right now, so things are looking up.

That doesn't make any sense. There are plenty of ways to separate teams.
If it works in a low scoring game, why doesn't it work in the NBA? I don't see the point of the 76rs being in the same league as the Cavs or the Heat.
Not only that, what's the point of the Warriors playing in the league now that they are practically qualified for the playoffs with more than half season to go?

If you actually enjoy the Futbol concept, but find it dull, a good introduction to it would be Futsal.

Futsal is a frenetic 5-a-side indoor version of futbol. Think Futbol meets Hockey. It's very technical as well, extremely fast, and high-scoring. It's gathering a lot of momentum as a sport lately.

Also, as the clock stops there is no injury faking.

First I've heard of that, nice one.

Not sure if it's true, but I've heard they won't change the rules of football due to fifa not wanting channels to stick their own ads into the stoppage from injuries etc.
Title: Re: Sports

Not sure if it's true, but I've heard they won't change the rules of football due to fifa not wanting channels to stick their own ads into the stoppage from injuries etc.
Well, if that was the case, the current model would be ideal as there are much more stoppages than if the clock stopped.

Funny or not, the continuous clock is a rule dating back to the 19th century, implemented in order to make the game less boring.
If you think about it, having constant stops in a game can make it a snorefest (some NFL games last for 3-4 hours). The 90 continuous minutes rule ensures that a regular football match never lasts more than 2 hours.

Also, injury faking is a very recent issue in world football history. Up until the 80s it was very uncommon. The most noticeable dive before the modern football era is probably the 74 World Cup final, but it was to obtain a penalty, not to waste time.
Time wasting is a modern tactic. Up until the 80s players would not fall down for an average kick to the chins.

Some factors come into play for the usage of this "strategy": the introduction of yellow and red cards in the 70s, the increase of the number of allowed substitutions, the increasingly strict rules regarding physical contact, the wide TV coverage that pans referees for not calling fouls..

Under this new paradigm, rulemakers are at a split: you either maintain a 100+ year old rule which serves as a foundation of the sport, or you change the flow of the game to tackle a more serious issue.
So they have maintained it. And so, the 90 minute rule made to speed up the game, is now slowing it down due to unsportsmanlike behavior.

Futsal is an emerging sport (under official status at least, since it has been played for almost 100 years as well), as such it is used as a testbench for possible rule changes.
Title: Re: Sports
Post by: Tad on March 21, 2016, 10:33:35 am
I'd change it. When it was thought of it made sense, but it's being abused so much now it's destroying the very flow of the game. Or at least have an independent ref fine/ban clubs/players for diving etc after the game to stomp it out. The NFL was built around breaks as it's an American sport that need breaks when a player so much as farts.
Title: Re: Sports
Post by: crackdude on March 21, 2016, 10:46:11 am
I'd change it as well.
Make the clock stop for fouls and substitutions. When time runs out, the game continues till the ball goes out of play.

While at it, cut down the sub breaks from 3 to 2, but allow multiple players to be subbed each time.

I can't say I follow a team as such, but I'll gladly watch any NHL game as it's rare you find a boring one. It's kind of difficult to follow them over here in the UK as they usually play in the early hours in the morning, but the playoffs usually mean they start early resulting in more reasonable times.

The league over here in the UK has just finished for the season and I'm now watching Team GB in the world tournament and the NHL playoffs. Team GB have just won their last two games and we need to win the next three this week to go up a division.

I'm a legit Ducks fan. I celebrated our 07 Stanley cup with much enthusiasm!

When I was a kid, I loved the movies, yes. But one day Eurosport started broadcasting the NHL playoffs. It was about 15 years ago, I was a kid and I saw them... Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. The speed, the goals, the tackles. I was a fan. I bought the NHL games and would acompany the season games.

Later, in 2006, a canadian transfer student came to my class (a Maple Leafs fan), so I had someone to talk about NHL and the next season we were champions. It was a great time.

Eventually I started to lag behind the games and couldn't keep up with the seasons. I still follow the playoffs every year tho.
Maybe another exciting run by the Ducks would motivate me enough to stay up till 2AM to watch the games.
Happy about tonight's 3-0 win

The Ducks coach has been shown the door as well it seems. Not too surprising considering their recent performance.

I'm not a football fan, but it was nice to see someone outside the "big" teams win the premier league last night. The whole league is built to squash the little teams so this is pretty special.
Title: Re: Sports
Post by: crackdude on May 03, 2016, 03:33:42 am
Every league squashes the little teams really..

I think it's wonderful. But it's also sad to realize that without the huge financial backing Leicester has now they wouldn't have done it. Come mid-season break Vardy would've been bought by some big money shark along with other 2 or 3 good teammates and they would drop places on the table.

This just highlights how football can be improved if things like transfer/salary caps were implemented and the winter market is abolished.

No. The Champions League is (regardless of it's name) a cup. Not a league.
Its name comes from the original intention of iteratively turning the European Cup into a league. The first few Champions Leagues had 2 group phases. Effectively, 12 "league" games. But the format is now the same as the World Cup.

The Super League concept involves something akin to a full blown double round robin competition between 12-20 clubs that would exit their national league system to compete at a higher level.
It's just a concept for now.
Title: Re: Sports
Post by: Tad on May 03, 2016, 11:05:11 am

Title: Re: Sports
Post by: crackdude on May 03, 2016, 11:27:57 am
It raises so many problems.

For example, why would I want Porto to be fighting for its life on a "superleague"? What would be the purpose? So Benfica and Sporting stay in Portugal winning titles, but we are "better" for barely staying alive in an european level? This makes no sense.

I believe there is already a SuperLeague forming, called English Premier League.
This happens in other sports. The NHL stands above all other leagues. Same with the NBA. I have no problem with the better players flocking the BPL, as long as there's still market for the rest of us.
Title: Re: Sports

As in, foul play? That initially stemmed from European football more than British. The British style of football has always been a physical game at its core, which is one of the reasons it's in a poor state right now. Since the start of the Premier League, we've had an influx of European players that are quite happy to fake injury to get an advantage. Heck, it's considered part of the game in Italy and Spain.

We'll still trade and be friends with Europe. The EU is pushing for a 'superstate' type of democracy. The Brits have decided they don't want to be part of that.

Also, England are out lol

Well done Portugal.

I'm disappointed Wales lost, but very proud at what they've achieved. Who really thought Wales would be in the top 4 at the end of this tournament? Well done, Wales.

Wales did good to make it as far as they did. Though IMO, I think they were a little too defensive the entire game and didn't take advantage of chances when they came up effectively in this particular matchup. Otherwise I think they could have won.

Not to be an ass, but I can't see Portugal winning. France and Germany are both very tough teams and I think France might just be getting into their stride now.
Title: Re: Sports
Post by: crackdude on July 07, 2016, 08:20:35 am
General consensus here is that we don't even need to win. Our goal is just to piss off as many people as possible before the competition ends.

Besides, Portugal is going into the final with zero pressure.
Germany is world champion and France is host. Either one has big boots to fill.

It will probably be a shitty final where Portugal delays the game's momentum shifts as long as possible until someone scores late in the match, and by then it could be anyone's
Title: Re: Sports

Well, Portugal vs France it is. Germany really didn't look comfortable on the attack and I thought the pen was a little harsh.

Good luck Crackdude.
Title: Re: Sports
Post by: JRcade19 on July 07, 2016, 06:28:05 pm
Germany dominated possession throughout the first half. Me thinks it was really that handball + goal combo at the end of the first half which really sunk them, because after that, they were never able to recover their cool.
Title: Re: Sports
Post by: crackdude on July 08, 2016, 02:38:35 am
It was a really stupid penalty as well, coming from the most experienced german player. Bad way to go.

Both Portugal and France aren't the strongest teams, but they are the sharpest, most consistent ones.

If Portugal is able to keep its nerve I believe we can win.
This is also Ronaldo's oportunity to reach GOAT legend status, I hope he does it.

For Portugal this is a very important game on a social level. We have millions of emmigrants in France working lowly jobs. The reports of disrespect from the filthy french are depressing. The portuguese living in France are treated in a sub-level fashion, and a Portuguese win in French soil could be a true moral booster for these people.

Didn't think Portugal would win, but once I saw France having a lot of time on the ball and unable to do anything, it wasn't a surprise. Got to say though, I found the game really boring. I ended up having it on in the background while I read a book.

Congrats Crackdude!

Russia still has some athletes. Just not as many since the mosquitos would deform the women's future children. Is it not still worth watching all those sports?

Here in the UK, it starts close to midnight and I have work tomorrow, so nope.

I'm glad they didn't ban all the Russian aheletes as I don't think that would be fair. They should just test them separately and ban anyone caught in the act.

They banned almost all of them.

Meanwhile no Brazilian athletes were tested.

Boxing - it was on when I got home, so only caught the end.
Judo
Women's Rugby Sevens
Rowing

So far, I'd say the rugby has been brilliant. I did catch that horrible injury with the french gymnastics too. Poor bloke, he must have been in pure agony.

Going to go see if I can find some Puerto Rico stats if they have any.

Why does the American Samoa and Puerto Rico get olympic teams and they don't say anything about the U.S. Virgin Islands? Also, why can't all three  just be part of the U.S. team?

The IOC is the body that basically decides, for the purposes of the Olympics, who and who doesn't qualify for the purposes of being a country. Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and the Virgin Islands(they are at Rio too (http://www.virginislandsolympics.org/virgin-islands-olympic-committee-vioc-announces-rio-olympic-team/)) in the eyes of the IOC, despite legally belonging to the US are deemed sufficiently sovereign enough to technically count as if they were representing themselves.

Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands and American Samoa, while noted above as belonging to the US, are culturally different, and with the exception of military and some foreign policy decisions are completely autonomous. They have their own laws, they can elect their own governments, set their own procedures for legal matters ect...all without US approval. Adding to this that the cultures in these areas are deemed unique enough to separate them from the traditional 50 states demographics.

For example, the US and the Virgin Islands both boycotted the 1988 games in Moscow, but Puerto Rico still sent its own team to compete.

Granted, just because the IOC says something is a country doesn't mean it actually is. They're a private organization after all.

So the 2026 World Cup will have 48 teams competing, with a 3-team group first phase.
I find this very exiting for a couple of reasons:

1) more countries represented, which makes it an even more global party
2) no more "dead" third games in some groups
3) same number of games to get to the finals, so there is no increase in player fatigue

I think it's very well thought out.

Also, how is it the World Cup if the World Cup has been abolished? Can anyone from another country explain this?

My favorite sport is swimming. Swimming can shape and lose weight. In water, the human body is under greater pressure, so it will consume more fat. In general, I like intrepid sourcing swimwear's because this is best swimwear manufacturers (https://intrepidsourcing.com/solutions/garments-production-package/swimwear-manufacturing/). At the same time, exercise in water is a whole-body exercise, which can create a more perfect body shape.
