Title: Last TV show you watched
Post by: SOUP on February 15, 2010, 11:01:27 pm
I finally got around to finishing the second volume of Gurren Lagann.
That show continues to catch me off guard with big game-changing moments.  Not going to spoil it for anyone, but I just finished episode 18, and if you've seen it, chances are, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Crazy stuff.

I'm not sure if you can count ambient TV as watching but I had my computer running an episode of Ghost Hunters over Hulu. I finally found a solid way to get around the damn ip filter. ... For now...

Been watching Sopranos, last episode I watched was 'Johnny Cakes' from season 6. Such a great TV series, probably the best ever.

Also watching Arrested Development, just watched the episode "Prison Break-In". I know i'm late to the party on this show, but it's one of the funniest television shows I've ever seen, everyone should check it out.

I'm just about done the 3rd season of The IT Crowd (one more episode to go).  I've actually seen a lot more of it than I thought from watching the odd episode on G4/Tech TV.

GREAT show! If you like Moss and and uhmm whatever they call Matt Berry's character, you should check out Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. The Mighty Boosh is great too

I've been watching It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. Funny stuff.

Someone brought up IT Crowd. Best eposides are when they go to the gay musical and when Douglas dates a woman that used to be a man because he thought she said she was from Iran. Douglas = badass.

Watched the 8th episode of Human Target. Will procede to watch more later today.

Also watched episodes Bounty Hunters and The Zillo Beast episodes from Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Bounty Hunters was suprisingly graphic. The story was about Anakin, Obi-wan and Ahsoka crash landing on Felucia and coming to the aid of a farming community that had already enlisted the aid of four bounty hunters to fend off a group of pirates(that sames one from an earlier episode in Season 1).

Without giving too much away, it had it's fair share of graphic violence(some pirates get their necks snapped by one of the bounty hunters and one of them gets a javelin through their chest).

Zillo Beast was awesome. I'm not one to buy Star Wars figures nowadays, but I will be on the lookout for a Zillo figure. Bounty Hunters had some great characters. Especially the big robot and the dude with the shield as a hat.

I've been watching Friends.
A whole week of nothing worthy of wasting my time on English DTV but E4 made me watch so many of it that I'm quite addicted now.
It's in the same vein as Seinfeld and How I Met Your Mother, both my favorite series of all time.
So yeah, Season 1 Episode 1 here we go! Wish me luck guys.

btw, I'm totally like Joey irl.

Just watched the first episode of Walking Dead.
I haven't read the comics, but I really dug the episode. Great to see slow zombies outside of a Romero flick again.
I also dug a few of the references to old zombie movies.

^I put spoiler tags around that bit for you.

Also, I think that was probably the single best part of the entire series because:
[spoiler:2hd21gd1]The entire show was meant to be grounded in realism, and yet throughout the series it was building up some larger than life characters, Omar especially. Omar was getting into levels of comic-book style heroes towards the end, and I think that giving him such a mundane death was a brilliant move. It showed that 'The Wire' was still set in reality and even for the most feared, respected and skilled man on the streets, he's always one stray bullet from death. When you take away all the stories and bravery and skill, he can still be killed by some little shit with a pistol. I don't think most shows would have the balls to kill off a fan-favourite character like that, and I'm really glad they did.[/spoiler:2hd21gd1]

Watched all of Curb Your Enthusiasm (took a good 5 months), excellent series. Can't wait for the next season taking place in nearby New York.

Currently watching Dexter season 5, not as good as seasons 1,2 and 4 but better than 3.

Still need to finish Mad Men season 3 and 4.

Can't f-ing wait for Californication to return.

I watched the MST3K episode "The Beast of Yucca Flats". Highly recommended.

The narrators lines are hilarious. You get these bleak desert scenes and random murders, followed by the narrator saying nonsense like:

"Flag on the moon. How did it get there?"

"Boys from the city. Not yet caught by the whirlwind of Progress. Feed soda pop to the thirsty pigs."

"Touch a button. Things happen. A scientist becomes a beast."

Mad Men isn't a show that really ropes you in instantly like The Sopranos or something might do. I suggest sticking with it, as it really draws you in heavily over time. It's very good, but takes a bit of patience to get into.

Fair enough.
I just didn't find the "I can't believe they just said/did that, because it's the 60's" humor all that funny. When it's just the odd joke, like the pregnant women smoking in a bar in Hairspray, it's cool, but if it's the show's big gimmick, I think it might start to get a bit old for me.  Less funny, more like the old relative that makes everyone uncomfortable with their very non-politically correct verbiage.
I also didn't really didn't find any of the characters all that likable.  I get that people making bad calls [spoiler:63wi3zfu]Draper with his life away from his family, or the new secretary sleeping with the asshole[/spoiler:63wi3zfu] makes for good drama, but if I don't like any of them more, I don't really care if bad things happen to them.
It's like when I read Macbeth in high school. I didn't feel like it was a tragedy at all.  When he [spoiler:63wi3zfu]dies[/spoiler:63wi3zfu] at the end of the play, I was thinking to myself, "Good. The guy was a total d-bag, and got what was coming to him".  I just don't have sympathy for people who know better.
I'll give it another go though.

Side-note: I did enjoy Akira Kurosawa's take on Macbeth in Throne of Blood.  That guy makes good movies.
Title: Re: Last TV show you watched
Post by: MadeManG74 on November 08, 2010, 01:08:19 pm
^I never really thought that Mad Men was pushing the 'humour' too far with regards to the 60's thing. There are a lot of 'wow, they could do that back then?' moments (Like a doctor smoking while examining a patient), but I never really felt they were trying too hard.

At first a lot of the characters aren't really sympathetic (Peggy was though, I thought), but as it goes on and you learn more about them you really start to see another side, and they are all much deeper than they first appear. I actually found the show really depressing during the later parts of season 2 and 3 because I did feel for the characters (Although at the time I was watching it I was pretty down about stuff in my own life as well, so maybe it was just a potent combination.).

Eithey way, how many episodes in are you? Have you gotten to the parts about Don's childhood and war experiences? That might pick things up a bit for you.

Title: Re: Last TV show you watched

Maybe there was just an abundance of it in the first episode. Like the question of, "are there any jews in the office", countered with, "not on my watch".
I've only watched the pilot so far, so they haven't really gone into the character's pasts that much. They just showed Don's war medal, and that was about it.  I'll still give it a shot though.

I watched the 2nd episode of Mad Men and enjoyed it a lot more than the first one. There was a lot less of the "look what they got away with in the 60's" stuff I complained about the first episode over-using.
Draper's wife also seems like a pretty sympathetic character, and Peggy seemed a lot better without Angel's son around.

Agreed, though I was very happy to see him back in Late Night mode rather than grandiose Tonight Show mode. They already said more naughty words then they ever could say on NBC (titties), so I'm happy. Also, Masturbating Bear mixing up the lotto balls, with a cheeky little slap, was hilarious.

Yup! They are heading towards ep 3 territory which means new clone armor is to come! And I didn't find that episode to be preachy, I mean Amidala has a good point. There are appointed senators whom have financial benefit from the creation of new clones. That's f'd up! Obviously they'll vote against ending the war because they profit off of it. Something you'll notice about the Star Wars senate is that not only do planets have representation, but also big companies have equal representation. It's like as if the UN has Malawi, Mexico, and then McDonalds.

However if you aren't a fan of the politics, there is an awesome looking story arc coming our way in December/January filled with 100% action.

Dexter Season 5 is heating up and its turning into one of the best seasons. Very good.

Sons of Anarchy is having its moments, but I can't take their action scenes seriously. Its to scripted.

Fringe Season 3 is... going. I mean, I like the show, the episodes are good, but they always 'start a plot, add tons of fillers, then finish off the season with the main plot' . Its annoying. Its like the Yakuza games!!

Ooh, that episode sounds really familiar, though we haven't come across it yet. I can understand your fear, though. Some of these episodes are really intense and scary! I'm surprised that they didn't affect me growing up as well.

Ok I'm back to recommend some current British TVs shows.

Misfits- It's on series 2. I only just got into it... Very good if not a bit grimey and dirty. It's a kind of very british take on a super hero comic book series. Except everyone that gets powers are convicted criminals. It's not a comedy but it has some funny moments... If you like very dark humour.
[youtube:fv0oodav]jUMgVUmA0u0[/youtube:fv0oodav]

How NOT to live your life - Also on series 2 at the moment. I watched the first series and enjoyed it but it's really the SECOND series that I think has really become awesome. It's a comedy about a guy that is basically a complete dirt bag. Series 2 is brilliant.

Peepshow - Series 7 just started this week...

Walking Dead: Episode 5

Pretty slow-moving episode, but the ending made it worthwhile.

I don't get it... How can you f*** up such a simple premise?

What was so wrong about the original show's format that you have to add 2 new characters that are completely worthless and add absolutely nothing to the show!?

What was exactly wrong with the show's format that they had to change it up so much?

It was bad enough that they decided to clumsly tie up all the loose ends from the first season in the first 5 minutes and one of the vital characters from that last episode of dissapeared for no apparent reason.

It should've been a full episode on it's own. Instead we are treated to two female leads, that quite honestly should've been just one-time or two-time characters, instead they are schedulled to appear in all the planned episodes.

They add nothing, in many situations they just get in the way. That Ames character pretty much killed any sense of menace emanating from Jackie Earle Haley's character. Everytime she walks into frame, it literally feels like she passed security and just barged onto the set and the director and the producers were just too lazy to kick her out and reshoot the scene.

And her attitude... I don't understand why Guerrero is putting up with her, that character has murdered people in the show for much less.

And that Ilsa character is also starting to get on my nerves and I've only watched the second episode. Again, another character who is completely pointless and worthless, anytime she's onscreen she belittles Chance and Winston, again, much like Ames, she literally feels like she barged into the set, Winston gives her this look at one point that sums up exactly what I think about it.

And funny thing is the babes that were featured every episode on the last season actually had personality and charm.

There's isn't an Ongoing series but there's a GN that was just recentely (http://http://www.dccomics.com/dcu/graphic_novels/?gn=15821) released that's based on the new TV show.

But these first episodes have been nothing short of atrocius. Look at these reactions shots of the 3 main protagonists everytime one of the new female leads are in frame:

I like it, quite a bit, a friend of mine loves it.

If you want a show that I dont think you can get in America but I think is amazing try 'Being Human' and 'Survivors'

Being Human is a dark comedy about Vampires and Werewolves trying to fit into society... It sounds shitty and 'twilight' but trust me it is nothing like it sounds... It's very good.

Surivivors kind of reminds me of Lost... But not shitty and not on an Island... But still very mysterious, its post apocolyptic, everyone has died form some kind of killer flu pandemic apart from a few people and they are trying to survive + weird government shit + strange clouds that havent been explained... It's probably my favourite series ATM.
(Be careful Survivors is a remake of a 70s series with the same name, make sure you get the series that started in 2008-9...)

Just when you thought Anime had nothing more to offer, out comes Panty & Stocking. I watched the entire first season, last week.

I was not prepared for this. At a glance, this feels like a messed up version of Powerpuff Girls. And it's sure feels like it, the guys who did it probably had this thought process: "Hey, guys, have you seen all those american shows that try to emulate our style of animation? Well, let's do a spoof of one of Gennedy Tartakovsky's cartoons, but really mess them up. Let's add crude language, sex jokes, toilet humor and every episode will be a parody of an american motion picture!".

And it really delivers. There's a huge Transformers parody, there's a laugh out loud George Romero zombie spoof.

I recommend this. That's the first time I've had nothing but good things to say about anime in a long time.

True Blood, just finished Season 2 and a 4 eps into Season 3.

I have to say, Season 2 is, so far, way better than Season 3. I'm not into the plot all over again that 'Bill' gets taken 'hostage'. For a vampire, he seriously is weak. lol.
Godric really showed more of a 'new side' of a vampire and thought his story with Eric was really good.

Nothing, its a great show done by Alan Ball who did American Beauty and Six Feet Under. I was on the fence about seeing it because I hate vampires due to Twilight craze, but the vampires on here are more 'sexual driven' and 'brutal', I like the concept of 'V' and some of the things they do.

Its a great show. You should watch it.

I have watched it... I've seen a good deal of episodes and I find it really, really boring. It's like a soap opera with vampires...

six feet under was also bloody boring...

I used to love the whole vampire genre... But ever since girls started liking them it turned into a complete peice of shit genre. I swear every time girls start to like something, it becomes shit almost instantly.

^Good point. Vampires seem to have some inherent romantic appeal to them in some way. Even Bram Stoker's Dracula movie adaption was primarily a love story.

Having said that, the difference between that movie and something like Twilight is still night and day. Sharky should go and watch the first two Blade Movies again, that will cheer him up.

Post by: George on January 10, 2011, 05:54:20 am
I'm sorry you find Six Feet Under boring, you can always stick to watching something more fast paced and easily to understand. Soap Opera? I don't like True Blood because of its 'romantic' story line. There is a relationship, but all movies have a 'relationship'. That is like calling Lord of the Rings a 'soap opera' because there are 'friendships' and romantic relationships in the overall plot.

I like folklore, True Blood features more folklore creatures, not just Vampires. Such as shapeshifters and werewolves. The books do have vampires, but that isn't all. True Blood is based on a set of books, which are at about 11 books, each season revolves around one of the books.

Before everyone says 'Its cashing in on Twilight', The books started in 2001, Twilight's first book came out in 2004. The True Blood show started airing in 2008, first Twilight movie came out that same year. They wouldn't know, starting filming, that the movie would have been a big success.

Also, True Blood isn't a teenage love story.

Well, I tried to watch Bob's Burger's first episode last night and I quit watching 5 minutes in, due to extreme boredom.

After I got back from work, I decided to take it easy and watch it till the end.

Not bad, not the trainwreck I was expecting but... gessh... There are so many problems with this premise.

First off, the main kid characters all sound exactly alike, they might as well be one single character, the dialogue is also a little weird at points and I don't know how long they can keep having scenarios with just the burger joint.

But I'll see the next episode to get the full sense of the thing...

But honestly, I don't see a big future for a series like this, I have seen a previous animated Fox show that was cancelled called Sit Down and Shut Up!, that show was vastly different and much better, yet it barely lasted 2 season, I don't see this one making it that far.

Dammit, after King of the Hill was cancelled, it's been pretty hard to have a different show that isn't either done by Matt Groening or Seth Macfarlane...

I could see Bob's Burgers being better as a 10 episode series. Problem with American TV is that something MUST be good enough to last multiple seasons. Why not produce shows for ten episodes, squeeze in a lot of funny and call it a show? Oh wait, thats what Adult Swim does. :-/

But yeah, I could see Bob getting better, as long as they go the Home Movies (Bob's Burgers is from the creator of that show) route and make the characters have a little more weight and emotion.

And true, the kids were all very much alike.

And even the ones currentely airing are predictable...

In The Simpsons you know there's going to be the obligatory Homer screws up something and hurts either a) Marge's feelings or b)Lisa feelings and magically solves the trouble 2 minutes before the ending credits episode.

Or the mandatory episode where a revelation from the past puts Marge and Homer's marriage in trouble... Guess what happens 2 minutes before the ending?

I'm looking for an actually good Fantasy/Historical show, I don't want modern setting/Realsitc shows anymore, I'm fed up with them :|

Even the return of *******d couldn't save the episode, and the whole thing felt flat me and a couple friends though off contacting Graham Lieniham via his blog but we stopped caring after awhile.

While the overall season was good, you can't have a season with Denholm Reynholm. Even Nolan was absent from the entire season, and he's a funny guy.

Just finished the whole Battlestar Galactica series (recent, not the 70's one).  It was really good.  Way better than the 70's show, from what I can remember of it.  I was in Kindergarten when it aired.  Anyway, you can watch both series on netflix.

Just finished Series 3 of Being Human... Series 3 = best series so far... Apart from Episode 5 which was really pointless filler in an otherwise action packed series.

Watched Misfits. I freaking loved it. Can't wait for the new season this November.

Finally a British show I actually enjoy.

I just watched through the first 2 seasons not long ago. Some classic lines. I'm interested to see how things play out in season 3.
I wonder which new powers will they have, and how will that change the dynamics of the group.

And have you seen the christmas special? It was quite hilarious :)

I'm definitely interested in how things will be changed up. Hopefully Alisha will end up with a more useful power :).
I really liked the Christmas special. The whole Nathan/Marnie thing was pretty great.

I've been watching 'The Pacific'. Nearly at the end now. IT's good, but not Band of Brothers good.

When the fuck is Boardwalk Empire coming out?

Finished series two of being human. I still think True Blood is a better written show, but its a good show as well.

Also 'The Shield' seasons 1/2. I seen about 90% of the eps before, but not in order. Decided I should see them... in order.

I had a friend in grade school whose last name was Trueblood. True story, and not related to the topic at hand.

I've been watching all the American The Office episodes. I Hated the first season, ignored the show until the third season, watched the occasional episode and then ignored it again until the 7th season. Then, Ricky Gervais made a cameo and Will Farrell is said to be in the final episodes, so I've been watching it again.

I'm a huge British Office fan, and simply hated how cartoonish the American version was. It also didn't help that the US pilot episode was a word for word remake of the first episode of the British version. :P

Still, after seeing all 7 seasons, it's pretty good! Dwight and Andy are always hilarious. Michael has his good episodes and his bad episodes. Seasons 2,3 and 4 are the best. 5, 6 and 7 gradually slip into Looney Tunes territory and are so-so.

What I really hope for is that Will Arnett replaces Steve Carell. Or Will Forte. Either one.

Wow thanks. That is just crazy I had no Idea that the show was that intense. That is a little  disturbing. Certainly interesting. I will have to check it out.

I started watching the British Office, then I watch the Golden Globes and developed an attitude towards Ricky Gervais. I enjoy other characters in the show, I only watched 5 episodes from the first season. I have not gotten back into yet unfortunately.

@Barry:
I completely agree with you on the first season of the American Office.
The show got a lot better when it stopped trying to copy the U.K. one and started doing it's own thing.  Dwight and Andy are pretty much the best. The new secretary's fun too.

I'm always amazed at how many British shows they try to remake in America.
I don't understand why they cant just air the (very often) better original.

They tend to always lose their charm.

I'm still most offended by the BBC 'Planet Earth' series narrated by the living legend that is David Attenborough being redubbed for America... Like holy shit WHY WOULD THAT HAPPEN!?

Even then it was redubbed by Sigourney Weaver... Who has most boring voice I've ever come across.

My god.

Saw the first series of Skins (Euro Fag version). It was pretty decent, I have not seen the American one yet. I might give it a go after I see the next two series.

Also: Europe remakes quite a bit of American shows too... its not one way. Don't know how complaining about 'The Office' is helping your cause when its universally agreed that the American version is way better. Its rare, but it happens.

They changed the narrator for the film version too. Patrick Stewart to James Earl Jones.

On TV topic, I just finished watching all of LOST. I'd avoided letting anybody know I was watching it for fear of spoilers :).

American version of the Office isn't better, so much as it had way more episodes to develop the characters. When it comes to the Brit version, while the characters aren't as developed, every episode is tight and well written. I find the Brit Office to be amazing, simply because it is perfection through all 12 (14, with the special) episodes. I could watch all of them in one weekend and come out thinking "damn, that was great", meanwhile watching all of the AMerican episodes over the course of a few months, It goes from so-so, to great, to good, to very cartoonish, to poor, to better... just not as consistant.  Plus, I totally bought that David Brent would be fired that fast. Meanwhile Michael Scott should have been let go by the second season. lol

Both great shows, though for different reasons.

Steve Carell better be blowing Ricky Gervais, to thank him for all the money he made. It's only fair.

Really interested to see this weeks The Office, I assume Michael will go on a killing spree or something.

You guys are wanking fools. Come on, serial? The American Office has delivered more laughs, for cubic foot, compared to the unfunny brit version. COME ON. COME ON. COME ON.

Almost done with the 3rd series of Being Human. 3rd series is the best so far, much faster pacing story.

Watched the Clone Wars finale at a friend's house on Friday. Fantastic finale! Trandoshan hunters, wookies, Chewbacca and jedi sans lightsabers. Great stuff!

Overall season 3 was great. It kicked off with an epic attack on Kamino, had Greedo versus George Lucas's cameo character for a two parter that was surprisingly fun despite not starring the main cast. Things got a little boring with Padme and the senate, but Palpatine made things interesting. Then Cad Bane and Ziro returned, with a fun Artoo/Threepio episode and a great Jabba-centric episode. Following that was the GREAT Savage Opress arc that I saw in theaters (for free). Then the Mortis arc which really helped explain The Chosen One prophesy. Then we got Qui Gon and Shmi to boot. Finally we had the Citadel trilogy with Tarkin being all evil and buddy-buddy with Anakin. Then the Wookie finale.

I'd have to give season 3 a 9/10. Lots of well placed cameos, great story arcs whcih felt like mini-movies and an overall less cartoony season than the first. Can't wait for the blu-ray and season 4.

Season 4 had Akbar commanding underwater troops, Grevious versus Gunguns and more clonez. Nice.

Lights Out, which just started this year and was already my favorite show in a long time is not getting a second season.

I am really upset about this because I really loved basically everything about the show. It was perfect, the main villian's name was even Barry!

Last episode airs tonight... Hope it does not end in a cliffhanger.

I watched episode 3 of Mortal Kombat: Legacy and for someone who isn't a big fan of the franchise I'm started to get interested in this series. I just wish the writing wasn't so reliant on cuss words, to me it's a sign of lazy/bad writing when characters curse repeatedly. Funnily enough, alot of the comments on YouTube were throwing a hissy fit about how this third episode had the swear words censored out.
Anywho, it's pretty interesting I'll probably watch the rest of this webseries.

Highschool of the Dead

Interesting concept, considering that the show is a checklist of very possible zombie movie stereotype known to man. But this one throws in an even bigger one: basically all the big-boobed girls who know martial arts(and the most ditzy) are the most prone to survive a zombie outbreak.

And it you've broken up with your childhood sweatheart chances are, you will get caught in a situation where you awkwardly reunite with your old girlfriend and you have to kill your best friend who was dating your girlfriend and that's just the first 15 minutes.

The short 12 episode series, leaves you wanting a bit more, but never boring, it knows when to be serious and it knows when you should relax and chuckle a bit. But a word of caution, watch episodes 7,8 and 9 alone because it is really that raunchy.

I just finished what is supposed to be the final season after waiting 3 years, like millions of other Peaky Blinders fans, for it to arrive and all I can say is it was well worth the wait.  Among all the great Netflix series this may be the best of all. Also, You can find this series subs at subdl (https://subdl.live/). The acting, casting, characters, scripts, cinematography, pacing, directing, and editing are all outstanding.
