Well, here is his "IAM NOT A VIRAL MARKETER" post about being banned:
http://www.thekartel.com/johnmasterlee/ ... rom_neogaf

and here is a quote from that NeoGAF topic:
Quote
SMB already has elements of RPG. You can improve his various abilities with power ups that you pick up. That sort of depth allows you to tackle various levels in different ways.

So yes, I'm serious.

^Yes I saw that quote, priceless.

Well anyway, curious how all the comments on that article are sticking up for him...

I don't buy the "I'm not a viral marketer" baloney either, I mean his website talks about 'opening dialogue with gamers' or some nonsense. Sounds a lot like viral marketing to me. Maybe not in that particular example with Borderlands, but it was probably an unsolicited audition as someone on gaf said.

I still don't believe that he was an exec/game developer/publisher/anything to do with video games at all. What kind of publisher/developer would be surprised at the notion of a multi-disk game, it's not even a minor thing thats something that would affect the budget/logistic/promotion etc etc. It's like if I was working at Ford and was surprised that there are cars that run on Diesel.

WHAT THE FUCK!? The man thought Halo was the first ever 'Epic and original' First Person Shooter!
To be fair, it popularized FPS on consoles and turned it into the mega-genre that it is today.

For home consoles of course.

I've known about this for a while. Viral marketing or not, it doesn't change the fact NeoGAF is a place full of cunts who spend more time arguing about video games than actually playing them so they know what they're talking about.  The site is only good to find video streams of E3 conferences and that's about three days a year.

I feel like i've dropped in on half a conversation here.

Basically Jon Master Lee was using us to push games like Borderlands, and recieved money for doing it?

Is this the gist of what's going on?

It was popular and comercially successful, yeah, but mostly because of the name attached to it. Notice how Perfect Dark didn't sell anywhere near as much as GoldenEye. It didn't make the genre popular in the same way Halo did. The tidal wave of First Person Shooters didn't happen until after Halo.

What?

GoldenEye outsold all James Bond games before it and after it... It also outsold Halo too.

GoldenEye came out at Nintendo 64's peak, Perfect Dark came out when it was practically dead - Not only that, but you needed the expansion pak thing.

GoldenEye is a good game, but it didn't make the genre popular. How many other MASSIVELY popular console FPS can you think of that came out between GoldenEye and Halo?

Now look where we are. We're up to our necks in this genre today.

Yeah... I usually go there either to post news related to SEGA, or just get gaming news in general, their Sonic 4 topic scares me away, its worse then Sonic Retro.

Perfect Dark sold over two million, closer to three. Medal of Honor sold a lot too and was a big series for EA. Doom also made money for Midway.

But Doom was more popular on PC. (And it was before GoldenEye anyway) Medal of Honor, as far as I know, sold horribly on PS1.

I'm not trying to sound like a Halo fanboy here, but from what I've seen, Halo made the genre extremely popular. Why else do you think the market has been so over-saturated with this genre after Halo?

Medal of Honor was one of the best selling games on the Playstation...

We also had Red Faction and Turok which also sold really really well. Timesplitters too.
