What are you watching?
« on: May 25, 2015, 01:16:42 pm »
Realised we didn't have one of these so I thought I'd boot one up;

Currently going on a bit of an anime phase and got three in particular I'm watching.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders 2nd season
Genre: Action Adventure

I've been meaning to check out the anime after hearing how faithful it's been to the manga and it doesn't disappoint. For those not in the know, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is about the Joestar family bloodline and how each generation takes on a different supernatural threat that threatens to destroy the world. Intense monologues that last longer than they should? Check, fabulous poses? Check, quirky fights and characters? Check. Basically a great adaptation of the source material

It seems that despite having a slow season 1 (I personally preferred the original JoJo series with Johnathan and Joesph.) the second season has been great so far and seems to be more sure of itself what it wants to be then the first season. Some great climaxes to the fights and/or tricks they play to be able to defeat their opponents. The only thing I've disliked is how long certain stories have been drawn out but overall the package.

Assassination Classroom

Genre: School Comedy

70% of the moon has been vaporised and the being behind the incident is threatening to blow up the Earth within a year. However he gives the Earth's government a chance, let him teach class 3-E and if anyone of his student's is able to assassinate him then the Earth is saved. Nicknamed Koro-Sensei but his pupils, the kids are trained in both their studies and assassination to kill their teacher. Assassination Classroom is a strange one and I don't think I've come across a story quite like it, combining life lessons and comedy quite well and comes across as a light hearted fun ride. Despite his threats to destroy the world, you can't help but like Koro Sensei thanks to how much of a nice guy he is and how he truly cares for his students. It also helps his antics go towards insanity.

Kekkai Sensen/Blood Blockade Battlefront

Genre: Action Comedy

From the creator of Trigun comes Blood Blockade Battlefront (Seriously why such a long winded name?!) about the group Libra that is made up of superhumans who act as the supernatural police of Hellsalem's Lot, formerly New York City. Hellsalem's Lot was created after a portal to the Beyond was opened and is now filled with all kinds of supernatural creatures that live side by side with humans. The show has Nightow's trademark humour found in Trigun also present in BBB and the animation and locales are all well done, the characters are pretty crazy (Klaus, centre, has to deal with Zapp, guy in white, trying to kill him every morning) all help to make the show and cast a memorable bunch.

I'll admit I had my reservation at first being a big fan of Trigun, the show seemed to be centred on the boy Leonardo but after watching the first 7 episodes I can say any fears I had (Such as focusing solely on Leo) was elevated, the show does a good job of making sure all casts members get an appearance. Only issue I have so far with it is that it might be a little too fast paced but if you liked Trigun I highly recommend it.

Assassination Classroom sounds absolutely insane, I have no idea how they came up with that one. Why does he want to teach a class? Is that his true passion or something? But why challenge the students to kill him!? Sounds funny.

I wanted to get into Jojo, is the manga finished?

As for the last one, BLOOD BLOCKADE, HELLSALEM! Did Rob Liefeld write that!? Sounds like fun though.

What I'm watching:

Veep
Genre: Comedy

Veep being short for 'V.P.' or Vice President. It follows around the Vice President Selina Myers and her staff as they scheme and bungle through their term in power (or second in power). Constantly making power plays and willing to do anything to get ahead, the characters often betray eachother and their loyalties, or land themselves in hot water in risky plays. It reminds me a bit of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' in that most of the characters are utterly horrible and morally bankrupt, and in it's abrasive sense of humour.

The First two animes that Aki posted are really good, absolutely recommended.

Specially JoJo...gotta love that anime. I wasn't so much entertained with a Shonen in a long time.

Game of Thrones: Season 5. I find it funny that people online are freaking out that Sansa was raped in GOT, this is the show that had a whole family of girls enslaved to fuck their dads, with each baby being sacrificed to white walkers. People are really surprised that someone like Ramsey would rape Sansa, the guy that tortured and cut off Theon's dick. Right, you obviously where OK with all that and having some off screen 'marriage sex' is just too much.

Even though Sansa wasn't the one that married Ramsey, it was even worse in the books. In the books Arya and Sansa's child hood friend is sent to the North where the Boltons pretend she is Arya and Ramsey rapes her then lets his dogs (and reek) rape her in the dungeon. I wonder how people would shit their pants if they followed the book.

Smallville

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (OVA) is one of the few animes I've liked so I may have to give this new series a look.

Saw the Supergirl pilot.

Still too early to say anything. OK special effects, character's costume looks nice. Way too many nods to Superman. But overall, pretty good.

I've started watching the Daredevil Netflix show. Saw the first episode, pretty grimdark and humorless for your standard Marvel movie stuff.

There's more to his backstory but I get the feeling it won't be explored in the anime, he does mention in episode 2 it's because he needs to keep a promise.

I wanted to get into Jojo, is the manga finished?

Manga is still going on but it's not really a problem. The series has time skips that introduces a new protagonist and villain, each new part (And there's currently seven) in the new manga is almost a reset with only a few characters returning from the previous parts. So you shouldn't have any problem jumping in, after one hero/heroine is finished it's a clean slate.

As for the last one, BLOOD BLOCKADE, HELLSALEM! Did Rob Liefeld write that!? Sounds like fun though.

Let the credit song perfectly illustrate what type of show it is with all the goodies and baddies partying and dancing.

It's got a great cast too honestly, one of the side characters is Lucky Abrams. He's been cursed by vampires but due to his own actual luck, the curse is deflected from him and onto any individuals in his local area and he seems to be completely oblivious to it. So whenever he arrives most of the characters are set on panic mode.

First I heard of this I was like "DAMN AMERICANS COPYING OUR SHIT AGAIN" then I saw it had the same creator and I've been interested in checking it out. Tell me though, does it have Malcolm Tucker level of profanity?

Bates Motel, a retelling of the origins of the Psycho films... Really creepy and cringe inducing which, if you've ever seen Psycho youll understand why that is a good thing.

Started watching the Boondocks, mostly to give me something to do while Steven Universe is on hiatus.

I also downloaded the entirety of Codename: Kids Next Door because a friend of mine is really into it and I wanted to see if it was still good. Making my way through that super slow, and I'm still unsure of it.

But Boondocks and SU are both really good, the former's a anime-like comedy with a lot of over-the-top satire and humor, mainly satirizing racial issues, but it's way funnier than it sounds.

Steven Universe sounded really dumb to me when I first heard about it, but I sat down to watch it and it's reaaaaaaally good, it starts like a monster of the week show, and very slowly but surely unravels a significantly bigger narrative about galactic war, an alternate timeline of Earth, the backstories and purposes of all the characters, etc. Basically, the first half of season one sets up the world, its characters, and their relationships with everything, and the second half deconstructs the hell out of it while also revealing a grand plot slowly making its way to the foreground.

^I adore Boondocks, I think it's a brilliant show. It can alternate so freely between political/racial satire and batshit insanity. They go from episodes that lampoon Obama and his election to an episode with Super-Saiyan Dragonball shit going on in a kick-ball game.

It's got so many great little moments where Macgruder just blatantly screams at the audience ("Every famous nigga that gets arrested is not Nelson Mandela!") to having very funny throwaway gags like Ghost Face Killa being an actual ghost ("Wait, you're not even dead...")

I also love that the fight scenes are actually really, really well choreographed.

So finished the Daredevil TV show...

I gotta say, I am impressed by the overall quality. Good production values. There are some genuine bonafide movie moments in there. Wilson Fisk is probably the most well written Marvel villain so far, mainly because the tv show takes it's time with him and his equally charming henchmen.

Matt Murdock himself is a pretty good character overal. Oddly enough his black suit was the best part of the show. Without giving away too much, this live-action version of the actual Daredevil suit was kinda... dissapointing. Plot-wise, it was pretty interesting, the show kinda slows down between episode 9 and 12, with not much happening, the season finale was very good.

The best part of the show are the fight scenes. And I'm taking Winter Soldier into account. I'm not sure how this will connect to the rest of the MCU or TVMCU, because tonally it's very different from the rest of the Marvel stuff that we've seen so far.

The other show I've been watching is Elementary. After I gave the middle finger to the show at the season 2 finale. I decided to force myself to give Season 3 a try. OK, I am glad to watch the show again. Since a couple of my shows are on hiatus, I need a detective show.

Yeah I really loved Daredevil and even if the portrayal of Wilson Fisk was the most different I've ever seen (A lot more sympathetic and tragic) it was my favourite Marvel villain by far. Wesley was another great addition to the cast but when I think about it, all the villains in this show put to shame most MCU baddies!

Can't wait to see the season season even if I felt the finale was utterly disappointing (I was expecting a good fight scene, instead it was something so generic and bland.)
