Request: Animated movies like PomPoko, Totoro etc.
« on: June 08, 2010, 06:16:40 am »
I'm really in the mood to watch some good animated movies, western or Japanese I'm not too bothered but there is a style I really like.

Anyone that has seen Pom Poko, Totoro or The Moomins may understand what I'm getting at. I like rather melancholy tales where nothing remarkable happens. 'Spirits' and such are always cool.

I wonder if anyone’s got any suggestions, I know I've made it pretty narrow.

(TV Series would do too)

Anything by Studio Ghibli I guess. I liked Spirited Away a lot.

I haven't seen any of those, but I'm going to reccommend Porco Rosso anyway. I think you've seen Castle of Cagliostro, which is one of my top 3 movies of all time.

I've seen all of the Studio Ghibli movies some of them multiple times.

My favourites are,
-My Neighbor Totoro
-Pom Poko
-Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
-Princess Mononoke

Spirited Away is pretty good too, the story is nothing special but it has that imaginative world that I'm craving.

I think every so often I get a craving for a particular type of 'escape' I want to watch something with an imaginative fantasy world, usually for kids but grown up enough to sustain my interest... It also has to be made well...

Its a very small niche, Hard to find, Studio Ghibli does it perfectly... Other movies like The Dark Crystal, Lord of the Rings, Pans Labyrinth or The Moomins fit what I'm looking for.

I'm starting to feel like I've seen everything good in that genre... =(

Not animated, but 'Babe: Pig in the City' is great. Melancholy and rather dark at times. Sometimes has that dark 80's movie vibe.

Animated-wise, I'd say 'Tekkonkinkreet' and 'Grave of the Fireflies' plus any of the ones mentioned above.

Go watch Coraline you fish fondling fruitcake.

I was pleasently surprised with how good it was, good voice acting, the stop motion animation was pretty much top notch, think of it like Alice in Wonderland, except not Alice in Wonderland.

Hmm... I think I have someones.

 My favourites:

- Fushigi na Koala Blinky(Noozles in the West)
- Peter Pan no Bouken(Peter Pan)---don't know if there is a name for the West...
- Dorimogudaa!(about 2 mole)--- don't know if there is a translation.

I have 1 more, an European anime that I can't remember the name.

The Japanese TV Anime version of Peter Pan is very, very fun. At least 100X better than the Western version. It gets better on the last parts.

These animes are "my" treasures ;p

Oh yeah, and CJ-7 is good. Totoro mixed with Kung Fu Hustle and E.T. It's surprisingly grim in some parts!

Thanks guys, But I’ll reply in order.

Mademan, Cool, but not what I’m looking for!

Barry, Can’t say Babe is what I’m after. Tekkonkinkreet looks very cool will probably check it out but its not what I’m after… Grave of the fireflies is right on track but I’ve seen it many many times. =(     Also what is CJ-7?

Emmett, Have you already seen Ponyo?
Yep! I see Poyo a bit like Spirited away in that, its got some great imaginative stuff I really enjoy the little boat scene. But the story did nothing for me.

Aki, I might just do that.

SnowCat, I’ve got both Plague Dogs and Watership Down on VHS. Good movies but a bit to violent and depressing for what I was after.

STORM!, I can’t say I’ve heard of any of those but I think you may be pretty good at finding stuff I’m after as you probably see more animated stuff then any of us. Will look into them for sure!

George, I’ve seen grave of the fireflies asscake. Will look into Little Nemo, Looks cool.

Ribbit King, I watched all of the Never Ending Story movies earlier this year… All I can say is… BOY did they age badly. Good for a laugh though!

IF ANYONE THINKS OF ANYMORE, PLEASE UPDATE THIS THREAD!
THANKS GUYS!
