Well, we couldn't play as Tails in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 (Tails is playable in 2 but he couldn't fly at that time) so I usually played as Tails in Origins.
It's rather fun flying through area that couldn't be reached with Sonic.

He's slower when flying, but reaches those interesting places.

Also if he missed a jump, just switch it to flying mode. Problem solved. Usually.
