That symbol (卍) is actually known as Manji in Japan which represents Buddhist teachings.
And of course as you can guess, yes, the symbol was removed from the English release of the anime, because it could cause confusion with the Nazi swastika.
But in Japan / Asia version, the anime still kept the manji symbol.
