I've only beaten the last two titles in the series, but even at that, I'm surprised this series doesn't get more attention nowadays.
These are hands down some of the best 16-bit titles I've played, and they're just overflowing with character.
I finally finished Wonder Boy in Monster World yesterday, and I'd probably put it just behind Monster World IV. The combat's a bit tougher than Monster World IV, but you can equip a spear to give you a bit more of an attack range. Instead of the episodic levels of Monster World IV, everything is interconnected in a Metroid meets Zelda kind of way.
The only real downside to Wonder Boy in Monster World that I found, was that the final boss is ridiculous. The entire screen is trying to kill you, while you jump around on a treadmill, trying to avoid a buzz saw in the ground, and every once in a while hitting the actual boss.
I'd like to give Wonder Boy in Monster Land a shot, but if it's any thougher than this one, I doubt that I'll be able to beat it.
Also: The emulation on these Vintage Collection games is fantastic.

Which version of Wonder Boy in Monster World is it? The Genesis/Mega Drive, I presume? I really want to play it. I finished Monster World IV a few months back and it's a masterpiece.
Wonder Boy in Monster Land is cool, but obviously since it's the earliest of the series (well, aside from just plain Wonder Boy), it's more basic than the later games. But it's still got a very pleasant atmosphere. It is hard as nails though.

Yeah. It's the Genesis & Mega Drive version (there's a region select in the emulator menu).
If you liked Monster World IV at all, I'd definitely recommend it. The main character will seem quite a bit clunkier to control than Asha, but things get better once you upgrade the equipment.
It's interesting to see the little things that join the two games together story-wise too.
I'll definitely have to at least give Wonder Boy in Monster Land a shot then. I'll just be a bit bummed out if I can't finish it.

I am not sure why I shunned the series for so long, but after fully completing it I consider Monster World IV one of my favorite games of all time now, so I really want to get into the rest. I have played them all previously, but not extensively.
I have always heard The Dragon's Trap is the best in the series, so I am not sure if I should go into that first or save it for last. Most would probably tell me to check out the Master System version, but I think the worse resolution in the Game Gear release will make it overall a bit easier.
Monster Land is actually pretty forgiving, way way easier than Monster World. Just be sure to ignore the boot upgrades!
Another very similar game I think everyone here should check out is Chiki Chiki Boys/Mega Twins. I prefer the Genesis version, but there are too many variations to count. Fantastic game.
Fake edit: Another another great similar game to check out is Tomba, which was just released on the PSN last week. I love the game, but not as much as I remember I did back in the day. Still very good fun.

I really want to try out Dragon's Trap, but I think I'll hold out for a Vintage Collection release of the remaining games.

I've started up Wonder Boy in Monster Land.
It's pretty interesting so far, but quite difficult in spots. Right now I'm stuck fighting some guy that shoots rainbow lasers.
My shield isn't big enough to block them, and I just keep dying over and over :(.

Arc System Works acts only as a publisher for Asian physical release.
According to what I read on smspower forum, 'superior' western physical release would be revealed soon (after they got publisher probably, hopefully NOT Limited Run Games).

If you're at the rainbow laser guy, I'm guessing it's that Bull Boss? If so, I hope you haven't been ignoring the boot upgrades as the only way to beat him is to be faster than he's able to blast you.
I'm chiming in cus I recently beat the game. Did it on the Vintage collection (tons of game saves were needed).
You just have to keep rushing him. Stay really close hit hit hit, don't take any breaks or leave any gaps.
Good luck.
If you HAVE to play things in order then don't play Dragon's Trap until you're done with Monster Land. It is a direct sequel.
Add one vote from me for Dragon's Trap being the best of all time. IV being a close second (and better in some ways).

Trivia: Wonder Boy - Asha in Monster World License was Secured by United Games

SEGA company previously owned the rights to all Wonder Boy videogames, even unreleased ones such as Asha in Monster World.
However, United Games Entertainment managed to secure the game’s rights and publish it for fans to enjoy.
The Wonder Boy games’ original staff, Westone Bit entertainment, came together with SEGA and United Games and created an authentic and wildly loved addition that stays true to the spirit’s first Wonder Boy game.

What's interesting is that the graphics in old 3D games don't look good anymore, but the graphics in old 2D games are still attractive enough. 2D graphics are timeless, and even with just a few screenshots of Clockwork Aquario this year, we've received a lot of feedback from gamers around the world. People soon realized the beauty of the game and reminded me that Weston was making great games at the time. I was really impressed that the media around the world reported and we all shared the joy of finally releasing such a beautiful game.

Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World will launch for PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC via Steam on April 22 in Japan, publisher G Choice and developer Studio Artdink announced.
The Switch version will be available at retail in standard and “Special Pack” editions for 3,980 yen and 5,980 yen, respectively.
The Special Pack includes a collector’s box, two art books (one 80 pages, one 40 pages), and a copy of the game.

You no longer need to be an elder to talk about the Wonder Boy series with tremolos in your voice.
Since the series has returned to the forefront with a silversmith's remake - Wonder Boy The Dragon's Trap at Lizardcube and Dotemu, and a brand new tribute episode - Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom at Game Atelier, it's been quite a feat.
The two previous projects were French, but now the creator himself, Ryuichi Nishizawa, who will be responsible for giving a second youth to Monster World IV.

Generally, this trend feels like good news for the companies which are facilitating this process, the developers who are getting a bit of much-needed extra cash, and of course the players who not only have more games to play but can start building up their physical collections more.
The fear that digital is the future, for now at least, will have to wait, because independent physical publishers have proven that physical copies are still heavily desired, especially ones of indie games.

Publisher FDG Entertainment and developer Game Atelier have released the PlayStation 5 version of Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom via PlayStation Store.
Users who already own the PlayStation 4 version can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version free of charge.
The PlayStation 5 version features DualSense wireless controller support, and runs in native 4K resolution and 120 frames per second.

Wonder Boy (2010) is CGI animation movie adaptation of the Wonder Boy video game series (namely, "Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap", "Wonder Boy In Monster World" and comic series called "Wonder Boy In Demon World").
Movie was originally slated to be a live-action movie by Uwe Boll and was the main news story in Retro Gamer Magazine issue 51.
After a long drawn out fight with SEGA refusing to ressurrect the character (even though SEGA only owns the trademark, not the copyright), Uwe Boll walked away.
So the project became an unauthorised CGI project led by its screenwriter Robin Morningstar.
Movie was considered as lost media but in 2017, it was mysteriously found as unlisted YouTube video from description of the movie review video.
Film became lost media again when in 2021, Google privatised all the unlisted YouTube videos uploaded before 2017 unless you opt-out.[9]
There has been a DVD at some point in 2011, but it's no longer available to purchase.

I can't even say "This looks like it was made in the 80s or 90s" because Pizar was still well ahead in quality 3D animation during that time.

Will admit, I liked the concept of the "Fountain of Youth" being something already well established and known of in the beginning instead of the end goal. Even going as far as serving as a mixed blessing for Shion. Though why would the bad guy try to drown him in the pool of life I do not know.

[Hack] Wonder Boy Death Counter SEGA Master System

The intent of these modifications is to beat the game with the least amount of deaths possible. I think hard platformers are a-ok if the game is not too punishing about it. Think Jumper, Meat Boy or Celeste. I think letting the player keep trying is great!
Here's what I changed:
1. The game starts with "x 0" as a deaths count.
2. Every time you "die", that number goes up.
3. [not changed but kept] The counter doesn't go above 99 (but the counter in memory still goes up).
4. Once the counter goes above 255, it changes it back to 99 to keep the game from triggering game over or rolling back to 0.
5. 1-ups don't count up the "death counter".

Shortly after the deal was signed, Sam Tramiel suffered a heart attack and control of Atari Corp was passed back to his ageing father, Jack.
With the prospect of seriously challenging Sony, Nintendo and Sega in the upcoming next-gen console war getting slimmer each month, the elder Tramiel wisely decided it was time to get out of the video game business and brokered a reverse merger with hard drive maker JTS on July 30th, 1996.

Historical context is important. In his long-running Video Works series, game journalist and Limited Run Games media curator Jeremy Parish claims the Famicom's hardware scrolling capabilities put it ahead of the SG-1000. His statement isn't quite accurate, though. For the first 12 months on sale, not one Famicom game featured any scrolling of any kind – pause for a moment and consider that. The first examples were Hogan's Alley in June 1984, but that was simply between levels, and not player-controlled. The first player-controlled example was Lode Runner in July 1984, allowing free horizontal movement. So for the first 12 months, Sega actually had the advantage, with several of its launch line-up games and subsequent releases all featuring scrolling, meaning the SG-1000 did in fact outperform the Famicom – if not in colours, then in movement. This makes Yuji Naka's earlier statement true, at least for a time.
Naka himself also mentioned scrolling in his aforementioned interview: "I studied the technology of programming by trying new things, and by analysing what others had created. Programmers would compete within those limitations, and it was an era when technologies would advance every year.
