Title: Shenmue Introduction
Post by: Superglue on December 04, 2021, 02:50:27 pm
I have never played any Shenmue games. What other games are they similar to? Can I start with Shenmue 3 or would I need to play 1 & 2 in order to understand the story?

I've only played a bit of Shenmue but I'd compare them to Yakuza.

The overall story to Shenmue is Ryu Hazkuki wants to kill Lan Di for killing his father. That said I guess you don't need to play the first game in order to understand the other two, I dunno how much context is missing. I think Shenmue 3 starts off with a remake of Shenmue 2 ending to allow some context with the mirrors.

You can get Shenmue I & II, III and it's DLCs on Steam (here's the multipack (https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/21591/SHENMUE_MULTIPACK/)).

I think you can start II and III right away since the story isn't as heavy as Yakuza and there is no big plot twist like Phantasy II-IV.
Or when the anime is aired later, just follow the story from that and go straight to III right away.
