I think I remember "up for jump" way back when.

Shinobi was one of them.
Up for jump and press Up + J letter button to change into the upper layer of the stages.
I still remember because finding that J letter (instead of ALT or CTRL, Spacebar was already used for shuriken) in keyboard was really annoying.
