I was think about this topic for a while, as the rate of releases for these consoles have slown down, dramatically I might add and glancing at the release dates of whatever remaining Xbox 360 and PS3 games out there, I guess it's time to say farewell to these consoles. A little appreciation thread for both of these consoles.
I'm not kidding, I checked the release schedules and there's a handful of titles coming out for these (MGS V, Resident Evil Revelations 2, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Mortal Kombat X, Mighty No.9 and a small number of other titles) and I'm not holding my breath for any new major announcements for those consoles at this year's E3. Sure there might still be some game franchises that'll stick (CoD, Fifa and whatnot) but it's clear that the video games industry is going to move on.
That being said, I look at the Xbox 360 as one of my personal favorite consoles. And thank it for all those good times. All the great JRPGs (except FF13, f*** that game) I've played on it, all the really good SEGA games that I've played on it. The Resident Evil games, Borderlands, Saint's Row games (especially those). I had my fair share of frustrations over it as well: the console's failure rate. Since I had mine, die on me at least 3 times, till I got myself a used Xbox 360 S model (bought it with my very first paycheck) and bought an Xbox 360 E model, which was the final hardware refresh. I'm still looking foward to MGS V, Resi 2, Tembo The Badass Elephant and Rise of the Tomb Raider but I think this holiday season I'll be moving on to a new console. Thanks for all the good times.

Just happened to look up the 360 release calendar on Gamefaqs yesterday.
I own neither but it's hard to believe it's been nearly 9-10 years since these consoles came out and It looks like they're still getting some solid releases in their twilight years.
-
Both were great consoles. There was so many great titles on both that owning both machines was essential!
Just a question for any Xbox 360 owners here? How many did you go through? I've had 4.
-
I've had two 360s. The first one lasted a good while but got the RROD while in MS's extended coverage period, so I sent it in. Got it back and it made it for about another year and a half, placing it outside their coverage time. Then I went and got the one I have now, and it's lasted at least 7 years.
This is kind of a side thought to the main theme, but it does have to do with the changing console generation - from the time that the 360 came out until the One came out was eight years. I think about the huge difference in experience younger kids have had with such a long console generation, to what I experienced as a kid in the passing of eight years... 1987 to 1995, for example. I got a Sega Master System in '87, and of course there was some other console that a bunch of other kids liked at the time. ;) Then in 1995, the Sega Saturn and the first Playstation came out. Now that's a quantum leap in the evolution of gaming. Not quite the same kind of thing we've experienced from '05 to '13.

Two. One was a refurb that RRODd and I got a replacement that has still ran to this day. Both were the 20gig original model. Once this one dies, I'm getting a recent model with a huge hard drive.

My parents got me the 360 Arcade Model way back at Xmas '06. Red Ring of Death around September 2007. It happened again on my birthday in 2009, just after I had bought Resident Evil 5. They actually sent me a newer model, dated from January 2009 that didn't have an HDMI port (weird as heck). That newer model fortunately never let me down. I eventually sold it to someone else and got a used Xbox 360 S model from a Game store with my very first paycheck. Never crapped out on me once. 'Cept the disc drive kinda crapped out on me in January 2015. Bought the newer model, Xbox 360 E model and sold the old one.
So basically, I went through four consoles total.
I'm sad that this generation is coming to a close, but overall it was a good ten years. The 360 jumped in way early near the end of 2005, just when the Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube were still duking it out. The previous gen lasted from 1999-2005, which was somewhat short. This particular generation (360, PS3, Wii) was also a strange one. But this gen did last for a good 10 years.
Like the Playstation 2, these two consoles will slowly for surely fade away.
This isn't a knock on the Wii but it was weird having that console winning this generation in the two years that it lived, only to suddenly die and the Xbox 360 coming as the de facto winner. It's unusual for a best selling console to die all of a sudden and in a way harmed both Sony and Microsoft, because they decided to artifically increase their consoles lifespan with Kinect and the PS Move.
Failure rate aside, the Kinect was also one of Microsoft's worst ideas ever to help boost the console's appeal. Faulty logic, 'cause even with a ton of hardcore games it was still perceived as a console for everyone.

Great thread. It's funny because I just recently bought the ps3 from my brother. But ever since I got it, I havent even turned it on. Despite some of its exclusives. I guess its just hard for me to go back to very inconsistent low framerates and long load times(1st world problem -_-)
My ps3 is patiently waiting for yakuza 5 and hopefully 0...
360 has been unused for a loooong time. It started out as a great console with games that at the time were really pushing themselves. Assassin's creed, Halo, Condemned, GTA IV, Bayonetta etc etc. I mean there's a loot more. The thing with the 360 for me was, that at some point in its later life I realized that the games were actually not that fun for me. I was not enjoying a lot of the games. It just struck me all of a sudden, especially when i'd go back to playing retro games or occasionally the good nintendo games on wii. I wasnt getting that sense of satisfaction at the end of the road. It felt more like a struggle rather than me just mindlessly having fun. I mean this in general though. I still like some of the games, but overall i've became a bit more picky with the games i'll choose to play. I like to finish games when I start them so they have to be worth it right from the start
The Wii was an odd one. It was pretty much an underwhelming console from day one. Really shit and im glad we're past that. Tbh after the Wii I didnt care for nintendo anymore. I decided to go full PC pretty early after all of this and felt right at home. It wasnt untill the 3DS that convinced me nintendo was still in it for the quality. The 3DS is probably the only platform right now that consistently brings great gameplay.

Last generation was mostly good, there was some downsides, but i think the positives outweighed the negatives. The main negative for me is it really seemed to destroy a lot of Japanese developers, but they seem to be making a comeback now.
In general though it was great. Solid online play, introduction of digital games and more.
I started off with a 360 and switched to a PS3 towards the middle of the generation after the 360 stopped getting games and mine was on it's last legs. Sold it off to gamestop and put that money towards a PS3. Played Valkyria Chronicles and never looked back.
It was also the start of youtubers becoming a thing. We got great classics like ChadWarden, Elpresador, and DSPGaming.

I think its funny cuz last generation was mostly the same opinion (Its too last gen) now everyone forgets it and complains about the same thing on PS4/Xbone.
-
Would have been great, even if the only games were Bayonetta & VF5+FS.
-
It's the end of a great generation for me too.
I'm starting to think it might be the last time I game the same way mind. The big titles you see the consoles pushing don't really interest me and the indie games and PC adventure games (broken sword, the book of unwritten tales, the walking dead etc) have really appealed to me more. These sort of games don't require a particularly expensive or powerful machine either - which is a huge bonus.
I'm certain I will buy another console, but I'm really in no rush at the moment. The indie games they offer I can get on my PC and I'm still waiting for the console exclusives that interest me really.

With the bloodborne hype, I really feel like I should get back to dark souls. Tough game man.

I honestly don't remember anyone saying that. There certainly was a bigger leap when it came to graphics, and online multiplayer and open worlds became far more prominent. Also, indie games got a lot more attention thanks to digital distribution and for better or worse DLC became very big as well. This generation meanwhile hasn't really had much new stuff that couldn't be done on last gen consoles aside from better graphics, but it is possible for that all to still come. Especially with how much companies are putting into VR headsets, which could be this generation's big new thing.
-
I loved last gen, easily my third favorite next to the 16 and 32 bit era. We had some great franchises come out of last gen.
I've got 3 Xbox 360's but none are broken. I've got a red RE 5 X360 and Star Wars R2D2 unit sealed. I use a black X360 slim to game on. I'll eventually upgrade to 500gbs, but I jus got a 250gb HDD that isn't bad.

what was the one game that blew your mind last generation? For me it was totally Uncharted 2.

Bayonetta. I mentioned this on Skype the other day, but that game is about as close to perfection as I can think of.
Just about everything in that game, maybe barring the story, I cannot find flaw with. Even the story is memorable for it's silliness and it's basically there to fuel cool moments and lead to set-pieces, which is exactly what it should be for a game like this. And the characters were wonerful so even that was good.
Gameplay: Best action game I've ever played.
Graphics: Gorgeous looking game with amazing art direction and designs.
Music: One of the finest OSTs I've ever listened to, perfectly suited to the game.
Content/Longevity: Outrageous amounts of things to unlock, find and challenges to uncover. It's staggering how much there is to do in this game.
All in all, it's just outstanding.
-
For me it was Just Cause 2. Such a big area to explore and such an ingenious way to get around.

For me Bioshock Infinite, no doubt. The game's story, atmosphere, and characters were fantastic. It was one game that i ran through(hard mode) and just couldn't stop playing. The ending tripped me the fuck out, definitely one i will remember for a very long time.
Honorable mentions are the Uncharted Trilogy and Mass Effect as well.

There have been a ton of graphically impressive games: the very one that I can think of that blew my mind was Lost Odyssey, It was a massive JRPG, took forever to complete, had some of the most impressive visuals at the time. It was also one of the hardest JRPGs I've ever played.

You know that game for me was actually a huge disappointment. I think it was the game that made me realise I don't actually like JRPGs at all, I like SRPGS (Shining Force) and Skies of Arcadia.
It was overly long to the point where I stopped caring about half way through, the bosses were such a grind, the music was phenomenal but everything else was mostly very grindy or felt like a slog to me. Also most of the cutescenes were vomit-inducing. I might try it again one day, because despite everything I do have some fond memories of it. THAT MUSIC.
Oh also, It had one of the best trailers I can remember:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-x12UEo-rs
Come to think of it, this generation could be remembered for some awesome trailers. It was when they really started pushing games on TV commercials with licensed music and 'cinematic' trailers. Upsides and downsides obviously but some good ones I remember:

Just a question for any Xbox 360 owners here? How many did you go through? I've had 4.
4 Total. My original was sent back twice for RRoD = 3, then the DVD drive stopped reading new games and I had to get a friend to help solder a new one into it. That system died a few yeas later, so I eventually bought a refurb S-model just so I could keep playing my much-loved collection of XBLA games (Jet Set Radio, Doom). Despite the annoyances, and the investment to keep on gaming with it, the 360 was pretty damn great. It'll still be a few years before I remove it from my TV stand.
what was the one game that blew your mind last generation?
Tough one. Gears of War is what finally sold me on a 360, but Vanquish was that on steroids... so I'll go with Vanquish. I was pretty jaded with Gears by the time the third game came out, so I was stunned to see Vanquish offer such a unique deviation from a 3rd person, cover-based shooter. Especially since they penalized you for using cover, I still think that's hilarious.
-
Tough question. It was probably assassins creed 1. That game was so mindblowing at the time. Running and climbing around in the ancient middle east just felt so surreal. I Remember we all thought it was incredible. It remains the best setting in the franchise for me.

I actually remember my dad walking in one day when I was playing on the big screen TV and asking me "What movie is this?"
He usually makes dad jokes like that, so I just sort of went 'Hah, okay' and kept playing. He looked at me funny and said "No really, I don't think I've seen this, is it new?"
"It's a video game dad, Assassin's Creed."
"Bullshit, that's not a game"
"Look!" Showed him my controller
He actually called his friend who was in the other room to come in and have a look at the game and how insane the graphics were. Come to think of it, it was my dad and one of his friends (probably not the same guy) that first showed me to play Sonic on Mega Drive. Good times...
-
If he thought that was good, Unity would blow his mind. While it had a few issues when it was first released, they've now been fixed with updates and the game really is fantastic. If not for it's issue, i think it could've been one of the best games for this gen thus far.

Probably should've mentioned Assassin's Creed as well, definitely one of my favorite franchises that got their start last gen.

@MadeManGT
I'll give you that, nostalgia aside, Lost Odyssey had it's fair share of problems. And there were a handful of situations of which I wanted to hurl my controller across the room. Difficulty was one of those problems. A hard game, very unforgiving especially in Boss Battles. There was really one very specific way to beat most of the bosses in that game. And it felt like it took forever to finish.
The first trailer they showed was the intro cinematic with those two armies duking it out and Kaim stepping up to destroy all the enemies and then seemingly transition to atual gameplay with barely any change. That was one of the most amazing things that I've seen.
FWiW, Lost Odyssey on the 360, along with Enchanted Arms and Blue Dragon were the first attempts from Microsoft to make that console appealing to everyone (until they devolved into the Kinect / CoD Yearly Update Box).
-
I can't resist saying it anymore:
the past generation was (for the most part) complete garbage from 2008 onwards.
The rise of DLC, pay2win, paid "cheat codes", day-one patches, persistent online DRM, console menu ads, "cinematic" 30fps, the death of original gameplay ideas, SJW pandering, forced social interaction, let's players, introduction in mainstream "culture", burial of arcade gaming, etc.
-
I dunno how 'Let's Play' ruined gaming... its like... nothing to do with you buying a game. Game's have been mainstream since the Genesis days, so I really don't get much of that (including Arcades who have been dead since the late 90's)
-

It's not let's plays themselves (I like some). It's the culture behind it.
It's the fact that these shitfaced morons get paid millions to effectively control what people buy or not. There are quite a few articles about this. It's what makes Five Nights at Generic Jump Scares grab more attention and cash than games like Vanquish, Catherine, Ayy Lmao.
A few posts ago someone was talking how game trailers got much more cinematic.
Not saying it isn't cool, but who do you think they are trying to appeal to? Gaming has never been as mainstream as it is today. Problem is it's mostly for the worst, with entire game series being botchered to try and appeal to everyone. Mass Effect, COD (it actually used to be a darn good historic FPS), SimCity, even "mainstream" Halo, have been compromised and shat on to appeal to a single minded approach to gaming, which is NOT a good thing at all.
The arcades were dead, but arcade gaming was not. Now it is.
-
Some good points crackdude. The five nights at freddy stuff is rediculous. I was seeing it everywhere but never gave it attention myself. Then one day some youtuber I follow joined the bandwagon, I mean he has to right because its hot and s gotta get the potential viewers. So I watched......... and was dumbfounded. But at the end of the day the real fault are the viewers. It seems that all you gotta do to get attention is act like a lunatic on camera while playing a horror game. The sad thing is that like you said it empowers them to have control. I dont mean to sound petty but it just seems undeserved. Effort is rewarded as well, but less than the cheap ones.
On the flipside there's some great stuff too. Another shout out to DSP. A likable guy imo. People make fun of him because he's not the best at videogames. But I actually like watching his genuine effort to try and end up getting better at the games. Dont watch lets plays that often though.
Also yes. Lots of games are promoted as if they're movies. The latest deus ex trailer did nothing for me. I am a lot more interessted in how a game actually plays. Its weird because games arent movies. Shouldnt that be a strenght?
-
Nothing wrong with Let's Plays, of course there is some people I can't stand, but that's how life is in general, you aren't going to get along with everyone.
I'll have more to say on this later tonight, don't have time to make a post, but ill leave this here

I agree, at first I thought the cinematic trailers were cool, but they were usually accompanied by some gameplay or knowledge of how it's played. Now I'm sick of them. The DXMD trailer in particular was just 'zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz'
-
Maybe I was unclear..
I'm not bothered by the Let's Play people making videos. I'm bothered by the way the community put them on the center stage and now they effectively direct the market. They direct it to where the views are, which is where the good games aren't.
I (must and) will point out some great games this gen had. But what went wrong weren't the games, it was the people around gaming.

And Microsoft has officially ended production on the Xbox 360. It's been a fun ride, Microsoft.
http://news.xbox.com/2016/04/20/xbox-360-celebrating-10-years/ (http://news.xbox.com/2016/04/20/xbox-360-celebrating-10-years/)
Xbox 360 means a lot to everyone in Microsoft. And while we’ve had an amazing run, the realities of manufacturing a product over a decade old are starting to creep up on us. Which is why we have made the decision to stop manufacturing new Xbox 360 consoles. We will continue to sell existing inventory of Xbox 360 consoles, with availability varying by country.

The Xbox 360 made my jaw drop the first time I played it.
The game was PGR3, and I was quite the MSR fan in the DC days. I was completely blown away by the graphics, and the speed of it all. It was the future.
Something went sour in the years that brought us to the present, gaming isn't as exciting as it once was. But the 360 will always be one of the great consoles of this industry, the one that made us dream of an amazing gaming future, and the one that almost got us there.
-
Man, I still need to get me a new 360. Still using the older model and who knows how soon that will break down.
360 has always been a very dependable platform when it comes to games. I never felt ripped off for going the 360 route (like I did the Wii U). Thinking back, I can honestly say that the 360 is my favorite non-SEGA console. Such a shame that the Xbox One didn't carry on the 360's legacy.
-
goodbye xbox 360
i only had you for six months and your predecessor was a hundred times better
i will never forget you and your ugly as hell first model

Changing face plates was a cool feature, shame they didn't make more of them (or ones that actually looked cool).

The Xbone is a worthy successor. Too bad there is a lack of good games coming out.

There's plenty of great and amazing games coming out for both the XBox One and PS4 imo and I think the XBox One. Liked the 360 a lot and MS took LIVE to next level and set the standard for all to follow and copy , for all that though . I still rated and loved the orginal XBox far more Up there with the Saturn, Mega CD, Snes and Master System as my fav console

I'm kinda in awkward situation right now. There was a time where my PS4 sat there, while I was playing a lot of Xbox 360 and PC / Steam titles. I even bought Transformers: Devastation for the Xbox 360 since it's the cheapest version on the market, but more and more I want to play on the PS4 / PC. My 360 is definately gonna get shelfed after I finish that game.
Having said that, for real. The Xbox 360 in particular was one special console. I jumped in pretty early in 2006, as I think I mentioned before. Wasn't gonna make the same mistake a few years back, when I stuck with the Sega Dreamcast all the way till late 2004. I bought a used original Xbox. One of those times I wish I had picked either the PS2 or the Gamecube at that time. Getting an og Xbox late in the cycle was a bad idea, plus none of the games I played made that much of an impression.
In a weird sad way, I was 'bout to give up gaming in general, if it wasn't for Shadow the Hedgehog. As flawed it was, it kinda helped me get back into games. I also played Sonic Heroes and Sonic Riders. As well as the Sonic Mega Collection. Otogi too. Can't remember much else, sadly.
OG Xbox, done. The 360 was a joy ride. The first three games I owned were Sonic '06, Enchanted Arms and Condemned. Man, so many memories. Opened up to playing sandbox games, played a lot of fun RPGs, played online a few times. Had arguably the best Sonic game in a decade (Sonic Generations) and discovered the Saints Row franchise.
Thanks for the memories, X360.
