Title: Google Preparing iPad Rival
Post by: George on April 12, 2010, 10:29:17 am
I love the concept of the iPad, but it does not have enough features to warrant a 500 dollar purchase. Lets hope Google gets it right.

Confirming the rumors, and after dismissing the iPad as nothing more than a large phone, Google is getting ready its own tablet computer. At least, that was what Google CEO—and Steve Jobs' own personal Judas—Eric Schmidt is saying.

According to the New York Times, Schmidt told friends about the new tablet at a recent party in Los Angeles. NYT's sources point out that Google has already been talking with publishers about delivering content for the platform. Surprisingly, Schmidt said it will not run Chrome OS—as recently shown by a Chrome OS engineer—but Android, making it the true big phone Schmidt was mocking. It makes sense to build on Android, since it already has applications.

I wonder if Schmidt told Jobs about it over coffee. The War for the Future of Computing carries on.

Flash (Google gearing up for 10.1 update), Multitasking (I HOPE!), Multitouch (already on the applications via update) and Android Market place? Yes yes yes.

Interesting how Google and Apple used to be friends, now they stab Apple in the back.  From what I've read, multitasking on the Android brings it to a screeching halt.  Hopefully they fix that with this pad thing.

As to the complaints about no multitasking on the iPad, there will be multitasking via iPhone update 4.0 for the iPad in November, and June for the iPhone.

I also like the concept of the iPad, but at the moment, it is such a complete waste of money for the average Joe, like me or ROJM (sega old timer). Even people who would have great use for it are not interested in it after hearing the price, like Aki!

=/

Long time to wait for such a basic feature.

I know, I saw the announcement. I don't know if it is good enough for me. It seems sketchy. Though it does what I wanted, but no flash still means no buy for me. I rather wait for something better to come along.

Apple says they wanted to wait and get it right.  They wanted to make sure multitasking didn't kill the battery and slow down the system.

The Droid is competition, but it's also no coincidence that it looks and acts like the iPhone.

Of course Apple could have sued any number of companies, since recently a lot of phones look like the iPhone, but Google is now Apple's rival.  It seems more like Microsoft and Apple are against Google now.

Like when He-Man and Skeletor teamed up to fight the Evil Hord.  It brings a tear to my eye.  :)

That would be an apt complaint, if the iPad were able to make phone calls :P
The iPad is more like a inbetween for a low end Mac laptop and a high end iPod Touch.

In my opinion, they should have waited till Multitask was done for the iPad. The Droid is just a phone by HTC that runs Android operating system. Android operating system is a lot different in terms of standard than iPhone's. First it is open.

Apple loves to patent, even stuff they never invented. Multitouch? Did not even know a gesture could be patented.

So far I don't think they've patented anything they haven't invented.  What they are talking about is the specific multi-touch where you pinch to shrink or reverse pinch to expand, swipe to turn a page, etc.  Those are the gestures.  I'm not a patent lawyer, but suddenly a lot of phones look and act like the iPhone.  Some more than HTC's.

What have they patented that they didn't invent?

Multitouch, which they sue for more than just the gesture of pinching, which they also didn't event.

It's all business. There is no successful company that isn't trying to screw the competition.

I don't know about that.  It's the first time I'd heard of multi-touch.  What is older than the iPhone with multi-touch?

George, my understanding was the patent has to do with this specific interface on a phone.  It's fine if you want to believe Apple patented something that was already invented.  I don't really care that much, and I think you have to be a patent lawyer to really know one way or the other.  Reading Wikipedia isn't enough of a qualification.  The true test will be the outcome of the lawsuit.

Shadi and Orta,  I agree.  Google is kind of a looming shadow right now.  They haven't reached the height of their power yet.

Have you ever seen Wall-E? The world is ran by this one company. I can't wait to have some Google-chicken with some Google-fries and a Google-cola to drink.

I wouldn't worry yet, they still gotta deal with Microsoft and the big communication companies such as Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T.
