Title: Sonic Adventure 2 - PSN, XBLA, maybe PC
Post by: crackdude on June 10, 2012, 07:07:20 pm
So a while ago some SA2 avatar clothing was coming out on XBLA.

Did it come out?
Does it mean a rerelease is coming?
What do we know about this?

SEGA is holding back on Iizuka-san's masterpiece. Giving other games time to flourish before they unleash it on the world.

I've always been super curious Shadi but are you being ironic when you refer to iizuka/Sa2 like this?

Based on his Twitter feed, I'm inclined to beleive he is.

All joking aside, I thought they would announce the HD Sonic Adventure 2 game. All we had to go on was the Major Nelson leak of SA 2 avatar items.

Though I guess they will be making some sort of announcement in the future. Other than that, I have no idea what to expect or what exactly is this port going to be like.

I noted in the podcast that while SA2 was not announced at E3, another big date is approaching: June 23rd, the original release date of Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic's 21st birthday. Friday the 22nd would be the perfect date for the announcement, since Saturday isn't usually a news day for SEGA Blog.

Watch, SEGA will make the announcement next week. The game will be the next title in the Dreamcast collection, with a ETA of Fall. To celebrate, they'll release SA2 avatar items to XBLA and themes/gamer pics to PSN.

Wonder if they'll make any changes to the original game?

They'll probably port the Gamecube version. It's the meatier version of the game, methinks.

Please oh please Sega, do not make the shiny black market chao DLC.

I also had thought about that Barry. 21st birthday coming up, really great timing for a SA2 announcement.

There it is!

So it's the Gamecube version.. I'm guessing from the Sumo Chao thing. That wasn't in the Dreamcast.

TSSZNews.com has a couple of videos from PAX (http://www.tssznews.com/2012/09/05/new-sa2-re-release-video-from-pax/).

I do believe that nuckles87 is talking on one of those videos. This is a situation like in Jet Set Radio, in which, yeah, the original game is amost 12 years old, yet looking at the off-camera recording, the game does actually look very good.

For some reason the visuals look more smoother with better lighting so far for me. I gotta try the game myself to confirm that but it'd be great if the ports got this quality of care.

I kept saying that since I 100% completed the game, that i wouldn't buy this. I think I may actually do it just for the sake of having it in my steam library. Support that PC market like a boss

For me, this release is like a blu-ray release of a movie I've already seen countless times on VHS. Like, Jurassic Park I know from memory, but I still bought the blu-ray because I wanted to see it in high def.

Does anyone know if the versus mode has online matches or is it local only? It's cool either way, I'm just curious.

Local only. I'm playing the XBLA version now for the site's review. So far so good!

GUH.

1 Shadow level, then 1 Rouge,2 Eggman and another Rouge level. I just want to play as Shadow!

This is why I like SA1 better. If I want to just play as one character all the way through, I can! XP

So I got this game. And I've been breezing through the Hero story casually. (I'll talk about the DLC when I buy it)

Gameplay is better.
Before you stab me, let me explain. When I started the game, I felt way more in control than I used to on the DC. But I was noticing some of the gameplay quirks of a 12yo game all the same.
My conclusion is that the game's way better to play mainly because the DC's analog stick was quite shit.

So I prefer playing it on modern controllers, what about modern video resolutions?
The game looks fantastic. Some (many) textures still remember you that this is a 12yo game; others are so "HD" that they make a huge contrast with everything on screen (for example, when Sonic is imprisoned and Amy opens up the cell, the dial where she passes the card is so detailed it left me in awe to how much technology has brought us over 12 years).
On the other end, in the very first, when Sonic drops off the helicopter, he comes spinning down onto a city seemingly low-res and broken in half (two textures don't quite match up).

Sound is still laughably awful.
While I love the soundtrack and think it just fits perfectly in the game, it's the voices that crack me up.
"wut iz lipsync" is the question left unanswered at Sonic Team back in 2001.
I love how the voices cutoff ontop of eachothers, and are all so low-volume in comparison with the music. It's details like this that we just don't see in games anymore. And I love that they left them there as they were, remembering us of a time when people weren't entitled dicks on the internet complaining about the most minute shit in videogames.

The Chao Garden is addicting.
No, you can't trade them over the internet. And that is sad. You also can't put them on your PSP or Vita.
But in all seriousness, that sounds like it would be something really complex to do only to please all the 5 fans that would actually carry around a console just for Chao.
I think the Chao Garden is the GC version (?) and it pleases Chao lovers. You can see your Chao's stats changing with each animal/drive you give 'em. I still haven't checked if they put the Black Market in there (or if you need the DLC for it).

Overall, the words in bold describe what a fan of the original will feel about game while playing it more than a decade later in glorious high definition.
It hasn't aged like fine wine. But it's just like picking up your old cassette player and listening to a cassette you labeled "t3h b3St S0ngS 3vuRR" a decade ago. You will like it, but not for the music.
