Question about the Sega Game Gear
« on: February 10, 2021, 10:43:18 am »

I just bought a Sega Game Gear with Sonic 2 for $12 at a thrift store and it still works. The problem I'm having is I have to tilt the system about 45 degrees to be able to see the screen. Is this a normal thing or a sign that the screen is dying?

I never repair a Game Gear before, but there's a recommended guide here:

According to SMSPower's Maxim most of the time GG problem, it need to replace some capacitors inside the console.
The symptoms of faulty capacitors include:

- LCD Screen only looks good when viewed at an unnatural angle (anything other than 90 degrees).
- Bright parts of the picture create 'ghost lines' in the dark parts.
- Screen looks washed out, dim, and lacking in contrast.
- Turns itself off (in extreme cases).
- Very quiet or no sound from the speaker
- Problems may be alleviated when unit has warmed up a bit.
- Screen flashes/flickers rapidly
