Ishii: This part here (points to the explanation for the different engines at arcade instruction card) made Sega angry. The Rocket Engine makes your ship impossibly fast, and it was a kind of joke, but we didn’t say that on the instructions. We didn’t realize that until after everything was printed and released, and man, Sega was furious. There were a lot of very serious people at Sega then.
A : Sega in the late 80s seemed to follow that philosophy: they weren’t just making what players were asking for. Instead they were leading players, and after playing a Sega game you felt like “oh, I had wanted to play something like this!” It was impressive.
Ishii: That positive culture at Sega in the 80s is owed to then-President Hayao Nakayama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayao_Nakayama). He constantly told us, “Be the first: make something the world has never seen before.” The whole staff tried to follow that philosophy.

Opa-Opa’s greatest cameo appearances

Since his debut in 1986, Opa-Opa has made cameo appearances in several SEGA games, a testament to Opa-Opa’s original design.
In fact, Opa-Opa’s cameo career began the very year he debuted and his cameo appearances continue through to today.

Trivia : Opa-Opa is playable on DARIUSBURST Chronicle Saviours

DARIUSBURST Chronicle Saviours, the latest entry in Taito’s DARIUS series of side-scrolling shoot’em up games is getting some very SEGA-fied DLC.
Taito is set to release SEGA themed DLC packs that span from Fantasy Zone, Space Harrier and all the way to Galaxy Force II.
The Fantasy Zone one includes Opa-Opa as a ship to drive, theme music and even coins drop from the enemies (and is used as currency for other weapons!).
Very interesting way of including the franchise.

SEGA in the Media: Opa-Opa & Zillion

This version of Opa-Opa has no weapons and in stark contrast to his video game counterpart is completely useless in battle.
Though the character lacks the power of his video game counterpart he still acts the same way I always thought he would in the games: cute and optimistic.
He may not pack the firepower of the Opa-Opa we know and love, but he certainly packs the spirit!

3D Fantasy Zone: Opa-Opa Bros (3DS)
A cute outer shell with a unforgiving challenge in the center

Get to play as Upa-Upa, Opa-Opa’s brother who was actually in the 1987 Master System game Fantasy Zone: The Maze as a avatar for the second player.
Once you beat the game, you unlock Up-Upa Mode which takes the base game a changes the rules a bit.
Now instead of going to shops to upgrade weapons (which have had timer on them as Opa-Opa) you can change weapons at anytime through the touch screen, but each shot will cost you a certain amount of coin.

SEGA AGES Fantasy Zone is largely based on the SEGA 3D Classic version, officially referred to as Fantasy Zone Opa-Opa Bros.
Like that version of the game, players have the option to stock up on coins they’ve accumulated during play sessions and use them the next time they play, and the return of the Upa-Upa mode.

3D Fantasy Zone II W : The Tears of Opa-Opa (3DS)

This is a great port of the System 16 remake of Fantasy Zone II: Tears of Opa-Opa and the first time this version was released outside of Japan.
M2 added a sort of ‘endless’ survival/score attack mode which doesn’t sound like anything special on paper but when you actually play it I think you’ll be impressed.
Not only did we get the port, but we got an enhanced port with widescreen and array of options.

Fantasy Zone is one of many titles brother insisted on buying for the Master System.
It was so strange and other-worldly. Fantasy Zone was unlike any other he shooter he had seen before.
While the gameplay is similar to something like Defender, that game was nowhere near as colorful and cheerful.
I can’t remember ever seeing this fucker in the arcades, so I thought this was a Master System original for many years….

If you have never played a Fantasy Zone game, you take control of a sentient spaceship called “Opa-Opa” (sort of like 1986’s “Flight of the Navigator”) that is trying to save the Fantasy Zone from invading armies.
You will traverse a stage filled with enemies and the goal of finding all the enemy bases on the map and taking them down.
Apparently Opa-Opa’s species can procreate as Opa-Opa has a father that looks like him, but is much bigger.

a Fantasy Zone experience that can only be had on the Game Gear’s pint sized screen

Fantasy Zone Gear is a significant visual upgrade comparison to the other 8-bit Fantasy Zone games, and also introduces new enemies, new power ups, and the ability to switch between power-ups in a menu.
In order to accommodate the Game Gear’s smaller screen the action is zoomed in, which takes some getting used to but does nothing to get in the way of the fun once you do.
Despite the game’s box art simply saying “Fantasy Zone”, this is a Fantasy Zone experience that can only be had on the Game Gear.

For Yakuza: Like A Dragon, you can expect to find arcade units for Space Harrier, Fantasy Zone, Out Run, Super Hang-On, Virtua Fighter 2, and Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown.
Different arcade units within each arcade offer varying difficulties as well, so make sure you pick the right one.
Also, you will have to pay the in-game currency of yen to play, so you cannot actually play infinitely.

In Japan, it’s definitely Virtua Racing. In addition to the sales numbers, I believe that everyone was able to see the technical capabilities of M2.
But in terms of the number of tweets, Fantasy Zone was actually more popular than Virtua Racing.
For overseas, it’s more diverse. However, in terms of sales, Sonic the Hedgehog was by far the biggest seller.
The second most popular title was OutRun – especially in Europe.

33 years ago today SEGA Mark III owners were tasked with keeping entire planets safe and smiley in what must be one of the cutest save ‘em ups ever: Galactic Protector!
But remember, this game is built specifically for the Paddle Control, and therefore cannot be played on a standard Master System Control Pad.

Limited Run Games releasing an English package version of the SEGA Astro City Mini

The Limited Run version of the SEGA Astro City Mini will only be limited to 3,500 units, which will probably make this version sought after in the collectors market compared to the regular Japanese version.
As far as I know, the SEGA Astro City Mini unit included inside the English packaging is exactly the same as the Japanese retail unit.

Metacritic has released their list of the publishers with the highest average metascore for games released in 2020, and it comes at no surprise that SEGA is NUMBER ONE.

There was pessimism from all quarters, from the top executives to the sales departments. “Why are they making a game like this…”
Once it was released, though, both the pcb sales and the arcade income were very good.
It’s pretty rare, for a game that’s unpopular internally to do that well commercially.

I am now an adult, an old to it but I finally have both time and money to dive into console gaming. I like the Fantasy Zone series the most I think and so if you could give me a heads up - what console should I purchase and which part of Fantasy Zone to start my console adventure?

Hi Harpoon, glad to know that there are still some who still love Fantasy Zone.
The best Fantasy Zone games are strangely enough are on Nintendo 3DS (3D Fantasy Zone and 3D Fantasy Zone II).
Both Fantasy Zone I and II were being remake perfectly with new feature that made it more fun and also easier with savestate.

It’s worth noting all three games were technically previously released on the SEGA Genesis Mini, albeit Alien Soldier was exclusive to the Asian (Korean and Chinese) market.
But the lineup is still a solid reveal regardless, especially since Alien Soldier and Super Fantasy Zone are expensive on third-hand markets.

My questions about Genesis Mini 2 shipments were forwarded to Sega of Japan's corporate office, which eventually confirmed that the new miniaturized console was a "Japan-only project" for the company.
"The Sega Genesis Mini 2 could only be produced in small numbers due to the global semiconductor shortage," reads a letter from the Sega president's office, so the company opted to produce a small Western batch of Genesis Mini 2s alongside its order of Mega Drive Mini 2s.
"The number of units for this project makes up around one-tenth of the total for the previous Genesis Mini," the letter states.

The new OpenFPGA feature recently made available to Pocket owners with firmware update version 1.1 beta.
In short, this allows developers to make all new “cores” for the Pocket’s FPGA hardware, allowing it to run games from other retro game hardware it was not originally intended to replicate.
This is an official update from Analogue, which they’ve made clear since the Pocket’s original announcement was something they’d always intended for it to have, even if it couldn’t be there on release.
Now that it’s finally here, the first new community developed cores included ones made to run Sega Game Gear, Master System, and SG-1000 games, created by spiritualized1997.

How long is a space year? Alien maths may have nothing to do with regular maths.

No planet ever mentioned other than Planet Harriers and Planet Menon, but that's not where they lived.

A new interview from Sega shed a bit more light on the concepts and characters that animate 404 Game RE:SET gameplay.
The “Dark” side Cathode personalities emerged as a result of Sega’s actions, which is why Sega is portrayed as the antagonist faction of 404 Game RE:SET.
The members of the cast are initially “Cathodized” by Sega, and use their powers to adversely affect the world around them.
For example, Outrun Type: Cathode runs wild throughout the cities, taking joy in her speed heedless of the dangers she poses to innocents.

GOLF came with several layers of security to prevent hackers and cheaters – these naturally had to be overcome by Ninji in order to play the game in 2023. It’s the sequel you’ve been waiting for: SEGAbits Presents Arcade Adventure 2! Meet up with fellow SEGA fans at Galloping Ghost Arcade in Brookfield, Illinois on April 27th, 2024 to play hundreds of arcade games in the world’s largest arcade!
This event requires no advance ticketing or advance access, simply show up to the arcade and pay them $25 for all day play. The arcade is open from 11am to 2pm the following day, and you are free to come and go as you please – just hang on to that receipt. The meetup will take place between 1pm and 6pm and will feature impromptu tournaments, arcade and world record attempts and the chance to meet and hang out with fellow SEGA fans.
