3D Power Drift released as stand alone version on Japanese 3DS e-shop
with 12 new character including Harrier from Space Harrier !!!

As much as it pains me I have to rebuy it, it is neat to see significant new content made for this game.
Also, Alex Kidd stands out. Everybody else has a place in the 3D Classic lineup.

M2 needs to stop porting games from the 16/32 bit era and make some fucking original games already. This shit is too good.

They have done remakes/revivals before. The Konami Rebirth titles on Wii was from them. Fantasy Zone II W is their remake.
If they don't port games for Sega still, we probably won't get anything at all. After 3D Classic they should work on the Saturn library.

And the Konami Rebirth titles were absolutely fucking mental. They need to start getting some original projects already cause they obviously aren't just port black wizards, they understand fundamental old school game design.

Before AM2 introduced the first true analog joystick, most video game arcades used mostly 8-way digital controls which seemed fine for more simple games, but AM2 had a more ambitious vision for their first on-rail shooter.
They wanted more precise controls, so they shipped analog joysticks with each cabinet.
That wasn’t the only thing the joystick could do, it also had different speeds depending on how far the user pushed in a certain direction. It could also sense sensetivity.
So if you barely move the stick the character on screen would barely nudge, but if you held it all the way he would move across the screen faster.
This gave arcade goers greater control over games and developers more ideas when it came to the type of games that could be created.

Space Harrier : SEGA Game That Would Thrive in Virtual Reality

One of the biggest issues for a company like SEGA to re-release these rail shooters with virtual reality support would be the graphics.
I personally think there are a lot of gamers that appreciate the aesthetics of 2D games like After Burner and Space Harrier, but they will take some work to get the virtual reality aspect to work.
One of the issues is that in VR you should be able to glance around meaning that reworking the game to have a viewable game world when players turn their head left to right.
This is easier for early 3D games like Panzer Dragoon because the game already has 3D textures.

The Making of 3D Space Harrier Interview With M2 and SEGA Developers

Re-making games in 3D is almost impossible for similar reasons.
When you take a character sprite that was originally in 2D and bring it into a 3D viewpoint, you have to build the graphic from scratch.
So for example, back in the 8-bit era, very large enemies were often displayed as backgrounds.
But if you did a simple 3D conversion of an enemy like that, it would end up being on a different plane from the player character and look like it’s out on the horizon.
If you want real 3D, then it’s basically the same as rebuilding the game from scratch.

HINT : Space Harrier's enemies fire three types of projectiles at the main character Energy Bullets slow, Fireballs faster, and Missiles fastest.
They are always fired directly at Space Harriers current location, never elsewhere.
As long as you move constantly without backtracking, you cannot be hit, and need only worry about dodging stationary objects.

Best Version of the Game Yet!

It is understandable that $7.99 might scare off some or others might consider this to be a lot for an arcade port to be re-released for the 20th something time.
However, don’t let that fool you from all the wonderful options this version gives you while keeping the same love and the purest version of Space Harrier even made.
M2 really has a knack for reviving old classics (everything running perfect and smooth) with even better results, and they certainly didn’t skip out on it.

Converting from a game that requires so much scaling is often a dodgy business, but NEC Avenue have pulled off this conversion with great success.
Although the graphics are generally a little smaller than the arcade and a tad messy in places, the scaling is far better than expected for a HuCard and there is little or no clash to be seen.
The distinctive checkerboard floor from the arcade has unfortunately gone, which is a big shame, and it is replaced by a far less interesting striped and colour-cycled ground pattern.
Sound is generally good, but while the sound effects are very faithful to the original, the fantastic Space Harrier music is arranged a little too lightly at times and I dislike the white-noise drums that NEC Avenue insist on using in all their games.
All the speech samples from the arcade are included too, albeit in a very scratchy manner.

Yu Suzuki: In Space Harrier, there’s no traditional collision detection.
The game determines your position, and the enemy/object’s position, and from there it approximates the distance between the two. From there, it knows the number of frames before a “collision” occurs.
One thing you might not know, is that the “ping ping” sound of your bullets reflecting off objects like columns and such—that actually came from a bug. We liked it so we left it in! (laughs)

For Yakuza: Like A Dragon, you can expect to find arcade units for Space Harrier, Fantasy Zone, OutRun, Super Hang-On, Virtua Fighter 2, and Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown.
Different arcade units within each arcade offer varying difficulties as well, so make sure you pick the right one.

This is a game jam game... software is prototype quality, but it works! There will probably be minor bugs.
We used some base assets to start the game as well textures built into unreal engine.

Miyamoto said in a recent interview with The New Yorker that they also played a lot of SEGA titles like Out Run and Space Harrier.
Rather than being jealous, he said this inspired him to try harder, “so that they preferred the ones I made.”

Happy 29th Year Anniversary for Space Harrier (Game Gear) !!!

The Game Gear port is based on the Master System release. Due to the smaller screen size some of the proportions had to be changed, so the Harrier is much bigger. The enemy sprites have been altered to appear more organic. Some of the level names have been changed as well, and there are only 12 stages in total. A password function also allows players to skip to later levels. Despite running on the same hardware as the Master System, the music has been rearranged.

The Limited Run version of the SEGA Astro City Mini will only be limited to 3,500 units, which will probably make this version sought after in the collectors market compared to the regular Japanese version.
As far as I know, the SEGA Astro City Mini unit included inside the English packaging is exactly the same as the Japanese retail unit.

Ishii: I wanted the title to be “Opa-Opa” too, but due to various circumstances… (laughs)
Apparently Yu Suzuki, who was developing Space Harrier at the same time as us, wanted to name his game Fantasy Zone.
But when our development chief came and saw our game, he said the title of Fantasy Zone fit what we were doing better. “Opa Opa is just a nonsense title. Fantasy Zone is better, let’s go with that!” And that’s what happened.

At the end of the day, over 500 albums were removed, including Sonic, OutRun, and others.
Unfortunately, this even included fan made compilation albums for games that have no commercial releases, which, quite frankly, makes absolutely no sense.

RetroArch Brings Sega Genesis Emulation to Steam with 32X Support

Picodrive supports Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Master System, Sega CD, and even 32X games. You can download the RetroArch Picodrive emulator here (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1227460/RetroArch__Picodrive/) on Steam.
There are two other RetroArch emulators on Steam via both the Genesis Plus GX multi-platform emulator and Final Burn Neo, however Picodrive goes a bit further by finally supporting 32X games.

The Sega Arcade Gallery is a nice compilation of Super Scaler games for the GBA - Space Harrier, After Burner, OutRun, and Super Hang-On. The ports are decently made (except maybe After Burner) but have one huge drawback: they don’t save your high scores.
What’s the point of trying to top the leaderboard in Space Harrier if it resets every time the GBA powers off?
This patch aims to fix that. Now you can record your best times and routes in OutRun!
All four games should save automatically after putting in your initials on the high-score screen.
Also included are the ASM fragments used to implement this.
(By the way, it is possible to barrel roll in After Burner. Hold L and R while moving the D-pad from side to side.)

All this time we were asking “Where is Shenmue 4?” when we should have been asking “Where is a new Space Harrier game?”
In a surprise reveal from Yu Suzuki’s YS NET studio is a spiritual successor to Space Harrier titled Air Twister.
Presented in full 3D, the game takes many cues from the SEGA arcade classic, and also appears to be much more in-line with the original game than SEGA’s own Planet Harriers was (which was also a 3D take on Space Harrier).

Yu Suzuki no longer works with Sega despite all the Sega games he contributed.
Now he's seems to be making games that are in a sense spiritual successors to the original Sega games... but kinda sad they're not direct sequels.
But at least the Air Twist lady has more identity than the Space Harrier guy... and a Queen-inspired theme song.

Suzuki said he has always had this idea for a fantasy shooting game, but back in the '80s the limited available tech led to Space Harrier.
In 2022, with the new tech and approach, his idea turned into Air Twister.
"This is my ideal fantasy shooting game. I think when you play it, you will see it has a much different feel," Suzuki said.
Suzuki did confirm the game can also be played with a controller, as well.

I do like the design of it all. Yu Suzuki has a brilliant imagination when let loose. Very Fantasy Zone or Special Stage.

As for music, the game’s debut trailer featured epic operatic music before switching to music that can only be described as sounding like the rock band Queen.
When we asked if this music is an indication of what we will hear throughout the game, Mr. Suzuki had this to say: “I asked the artist Valensia to do the music for this project. His fusion of rock, opera and classical music styles was the perfect fit for my ideal of the fantasy shooter.”

Now before you moan and groan about it being on Apple products only, it was Apple who asked him and his team for an arcade-style game.

The new OpenFPGA feature recently made available to Pocket owners with firmware update version 1.1 beta.
In short, this allows developers to make all new “cores” for the Pocket’s FPGA hardware, allowing it to run games from other retro game hardware it was not originally intended to replicate.
This is an official update from Analogue, which they’ve made clear since the Pocket’s original announcement was something they’d always intended for it to have, even if it couldn’t be there on release.
Now that it’s finally here, the first new community developed cores included ones made to run Sega Game Gear, Master System, and SG-1000 games, created by spiritualized1997.

This comes alongside pre-orders for the console going live. However, it’s only available via Amazon and is priced at £104.99.

Greyfox Books, the publisher behind Atari: a Visual History and Coin-Op: The Arcade Guide, had originally planned to fund a similar book to its previous efforts via a Kickstarter campaign in 2021, but Sega's lawyers ended up taking exception to the project and sent them a C&D to stop production of it immediately.
Rather than have all that work go to waste, however, Darren Doyle, the book's creator, has now decided to publish it on the Greyfox site as a free download, giving Sega fans access to the shelved release.

Speaking to the Japanese publication Famitsu (translated by VGC), SEGA president Yukio Sugino stated that the "Sega Saturn is surprisingly high performance," admitting that "the difficulty of miniaturisation is also high."
Sugino added that it may take a while for a Sega Saturn Mini to hit store shelves, but he seems keen to collaborate with teams who know the hardware inside and out: "I’d like to think about it when we’re in a situation where we can openly develop it together with people who have always loved the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast."

Q : The game is being published by ININ Games who have an excellent track record with a variety of well-known franchises. How did the relationship with ININ Games begin, ultimately leading to their collaboration with YSNET to publish Air Twister?
Yu Suzuki : United Games Entertainment approached us first. I could tell their attitude towards Air Twister was very enthusiastic and they were ready to go, so we asked them to be our worldwide publisher and signed with their label, ININ.
Q : Will the console version of Air Twister ship with all of the modes and updates previously released on the Apple Arcade version – and has anything been updated / added since?
Yu Suzuki : Nothing new has been added, but all the modes and updates from the Apple Arcade version are included.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 4: Space Harrier (PS2).
This game is a remake of the original 1985 arcade release of Space Harrier, namely one which replaces the scaled 2D sprites with 3D textured models.
It tweaks some of the levels, remixes the music and adds a lock-on feature similar to Panzer Dragoon, but is otherwise mostly the same game.
"Fractal" mode removes the checkerboard floors and replaces them with more realistic scenery.

- Lightning Over Drive - Pressing the slow button slows down the flow of time except for ASURA. It will not be available when the lower gauge remains low.

It’s the sequel you’ve been waiting for: SEGAbits Presents Arcade Adventure 2! Meet up with fellow SEGA fans at Galloping Ghost Arcade in Brookfield, Illinois on April 27th, 2024 to play hundreds of arcade games in the world’s largest arcade!
This event requires no advance ticketing or advance access, simply show up to the arcade and pay them $25 for all day play. The arcade is open from 11am to 2pm the following day, and you are free to come and go as you please – just hang on to that receipt. The meetup will take place between 1pm and 6pm and will feature impromptu tournaments, arcade and world record attempts and the chance to meet and hang out with fellow SEGA fans.
