Title: Bragging rights: originals vs fan remakes?
Post by: Mystic Monkey on November 06, 2022, 10:01:06 am
Let's say I never played Sonic '06 (https://sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(2006)). (I have but being hypothetical), but what if I waited for Sonic P-06 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_P-06) to be finished and I got to play it as well as finish it in it's entirety. Could I say "I played/ finished Sonic '06" even if it was not the original version?

Another example. I never played Sonic Triple Trouble (https://sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_Triple_Trouble). I'm not being hypothetical, I never got to play it. I know it's unlockable in Sonic Adventure and Gems Collection but I was never that good with the emblems. But I did download the fan remake (https://gamejolt.com/games/sonictripletrouble16bit/322794) which has 16-bit graphics and slightly different from the original. Even if the remake is not licensed by Sega or made by Sonic Team would it still "count" for saying "I played this game" even if it wasn't the original game?

I'm no braggart, I'm not looking for bragging rights for playing remakes over originals. I'm just curious what the overall consensus on the matter is.

As for me, it doesn't count since fan remake still have differences with the original version.
It may be better but it's still not the original.
For example I played lot of Pong remakes but I won't claim that I played the original ones.
Only remakes, both official and fan remakes.

Still I don't mind people claiming that they're counted.
As long as they enjoy the games.

I see. I just wonder if it's OK to accept substitutes in such situations when the original is unavailable or flawed. Such as Project '06 being a more "fixed" version of Sonic '06.

Remaking any game is not permitted unless expressly authorized by the publisher and granted in writing.

I don't think that's how that work. At least I don't think permission was asked for Project '06 or Tripe Trouble remake.

May be it's not permitted by law, but as long as the original maker doesn't mind then there's nothing wrong with it.

Well yeah if they're not Nintendo who will harass you for cease and desist.
Dunno about Disney. Haven't heard any lawsuits around Mickey Mouse or Kingdom Hearts fangames.
Sega's cool though. Practically support the fan game scene.

True, Nintendo is strict.
They even goes after fan-made custom Steam “icons” with DMCA takedowns.

Kind of petty thing to do. Goes to show Sega still does what Nintendon't.
