Yu Suzuki: 'I think Sega's going to let me' make Shenmue 3
« on: March 02, 2011, 04:52:20 pm »
Quote
During his GDC 2011 panel, Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki said "I think Sega will let me make it," referring to the long-awaited Shenmue 3. However, it's not a guarantee. He couched the discussion by saying it's contingent on budget issues -- by the way, Suzuki said that Shenmue cost $47 million to make, not the patently ridiculous $70 million Sega quoted -- and that he basically could only be sure that 200 people (the people in the room) would buy it.

So it probably won't amount to anything. But Yu Suzuki just sustained our hopes of continued Shenmue regardless.

It was Yu Suzuki himself that said Shenmue cost $70 and he was talking about the expenses of both games + everything else.

Now I assume he is talking about the development of Shenmue 1 alone and who ever wrote this is just being a dumb fuck.

Which makes me wonder what else he's miss understood about what Yu Suzuki was saying.

Perhaps it was $47 million for development of Shenmue, and $23 million for Yu Suzuki's Ferrari collection.

Well, if anything there seems to be a change in Sega's stance.

It's been years since Sega and Yu Suzuki have spoken publicicly about that particular franchise. They have both remained coy.

The mere fact that Yu Suzuki is now actually speaking more freely about Shenmue, moreso than the previous five years, seems at least, to me, an indication that something has changed.

It still doesn't mean anything, but it's a start...

$47 million is just for the DC versions, the Japanese version of Shenmue cost SEGA over $20. The project has whole cost SEGA over $70 million and that's not just from the man himself( in english no less)

but also confirmed by Kat's Sato in the official Dreamcast magazine March 2001 .

What I'd love to see is Shenmue 1 show up in the next round of Dreamcast Collection titles, then Shenmue 2 release as a Games on Demand title THEN have MS fund a Shenmue 3. Not that I'm hating on Sony, but there are more than enough SEGA exclusives on the PS3, and I really do think exclusivity will help Shenmue 3 as it means a console manufacturer could help fund the game. MS has money, and Shenmue has already been an XBOX title, so it seems like a good fit. Add in some optional Kinect activities (darts, that QTE punching game) and baby, you've got a game going.

Seriously, the game is an assured hit. I cannot imagine the game NOT selling well in today's world. So many people have Shenmue fever, and need a cure.

And hey! Why not release Shenmue Town to the iPhone and Windows Phone 7? Have the Windows Phone version be able to link up with the console games and unlock new goodies? Like earning toy capsules on the phone = toy capsules in Shenmue 1, or there could be exclusive move scrolls that can be found on the phone and used in Shenmue 3?

I'm an iOS man myself, though even I have to admit this would be very awesome:

But 360 sucks eggs in Japan. I think PS3 is more Jap game friendly and I hate the 360.

That said, Shenmue 3 would be the 2nd worthwhile exclusive for it.

Shenmue main market in terms of sales in the USA. Shenmue II was total flop in Japan on the DC . Imo SEGA should fund Shemue III and IV them self's ; Given AM2 and Yakuza Team the task of developing the title and make it Multi Platform (so everyone wins)

I'm sure a Multi Platform Shenmue would sell over a Million easy, shame it may never happen

Oh yeah, I'm all for multiplatform, but if it means the game going exclusive in order to receive additional funding and be made, I'm all for that too. Of course, being a 360 owner, I lean 360 when it comes to exclusivity preference, but like TA said, Shenmue's main market is the US and Europe. And in the US, 360 is king.

Oh, and try not referring to Japanese games as "Jap", it has a derogatory meaning. Rather, use "JP" or "Japanese". :)

So anyway, Shenmue isn't popular with those yellow nips over in ...

Oh sorry.

Erm, anyway I don't think Shenmue is the kinda game that MS would jump in to fund for exclusivity. They might help out with marketing and all that etc if there were some Kinect functions, but I would rather see Sega make it multi-platform.It seems like a direct hit to us, but I'm still not entirely sure it would be huge. It would likely sell well (if sega gets the marketing right especially), but HUGE? Maybe not.

In any event, it's still pretty vague and I'm not really getting my hopes too high just yet. Hopefully there is some kind of follow up to this.

I wouldn't call it a total flop, it sold about 127,000 copies on Dreamcast, I think. Not great, but not completely awful.

I would expect Shenmue III to sell between 100,000 and 200,000, although I would hope for a lot more.

I'd wager it would make Alan Wake numbers... But if budget is the only thing standing in the game's eventual release, by all means, Yu Suzuki, if you want this done, make as many consessions as possible. Whatever works...
