Is it just me or are psychologist useless?
« on: April 29, 2011, 04:06:43 pm »
I go see a psychologist every once in a while.. but meh =/ seems useless. His advice is usually stuff I have thought of way before now. It also seems like all he does is agree with me in an attempt to make me happy

i don't see how this is supposed to help me feel better =/

I don't know, guess it depends on the person. I had a shrink as a kid, he helped me a lot I think. That was my personal experience though.

I'll be trying depression/anxiety pills again soon.. due to pressure from others. but I doubt they will do anything, they never did when I was younger.

I guess a psychologist works better then those =/ lol someone to talk to atleast...

I think its more about talking to someone and them trying to help you. In the end, yes, pretty much bullshit.

Try a variety of depression pills I guess, never taken them myself so I am not sure which are good. Not that I haven't been depressed, just I have tendency to ignore it and hole it up inside of myself. With that being said, depending on the issue you are depressed about you are the only one who can resolve it really.

Like I actually get depressed a lot as I have very high standards for myself that I usually fail to meet; e.g. I got a 91% on a math test recently and was depressed it wasn't a 95%. That made me down for a couple of days. If your issues are education related then you might consider seeing a tutor at some point in your schedule. At my high school they had free ones, and at my College they have free ones.

Everything makes me depressed.

then when I get into the mood to change something, my anxiety takes over, and that in turn eventually makes me depressed again.

I might be better off killing myself at this rate =P

Holy crap Shadi, I didn't know you were depressed.

Hope you feel better. Can't you go to the doctor so you can get some strong(er) anti-depressants?

Look Will I don't think you should Stereotype psychologists altogether. If you don't think the psychologist is helping you, and you don't see improvement in your life and if the brief information you've provided is true.

Then that particular psychologist may very well be useless.

While Psychologists are encouraged (more like it is a demand) to deal with Clients from all walks of life, I personally feel a psychologist who shares a congruent history with the patient can be more helpful than someone with just text book experience.

My mom's suffered from depression, i've dealt with it seen the triggers first hand and I think that gives me a genuine edge over people who've come from the perfect families.

It's just an example. My supervisor disagrees with me as she deals with people with Schizophrenia, so should her mother have schizophrenia in order to be better at dealing with patients who have schizophrenia.

Also another important variable is the commitment of the psychologist unlike other fields of medicine we can't just see a problem and write up a perscreption. We have to research (or atleast rookie's such as myself) each particular case, read up case studies of other Patients with similar symptoms, family structures and so on.

A psychologists role is much greater than just listening to you for an hour and spit out a few sentences. Sessions are recorded and documented. Replayed, Analyzed and future plans are determined on those.

Psychological tests such as HFD (Human Figure Drawing), Rorschach, TAT (Thematic Aptitude Tests) and several other expressive theraputic technique's are used to gain a mutual understanding of the client's condition.

It is a very long and complicated process and it can only be done if the therapist invests their time in a patient/client.

It is unethical to record without consent.

I always ask permission and keep my recorder visibly infront of my clients/patients. I also take detailed notes of all the sessions, stuff that a voice recorder can't detect.
