"Duke Nukem 3D" on Genesis/Mega Drive
« on: February 08, 2016, 09:47:36 pm »
I reviewed this game a bit ago, but I was curious if anyone here has had a chance to play it. While I feel it's ridiculously hard, it's still a fun game. I wonder, what if it had come out during the Genesis' lifespan in North America? Do you think it would have sold well? Would it have been massacred in EGM and GamePro for being a stripped-down port?

Haven't got a chance to play Piko Interactive's worldwide version but I've played the rom of Tectoy version.
And somehow I didn't like it because, yeah, ... it's too hard.
I prefer "Wolfenstein 3D" on Genesis/Mega Drive than this one.

Right on! Yeah, it's hard for the first few stages, but it balances out a bit by Level 3. Admittedly, if there weren't a 'save' feature, I'm not sure if I'd be able to play it. Still, there is a 'God' code. :)

Hey, cap'n! How you doin'? Yes, it's been a crazy year for me. Got an apartment with my girlfriend, changed jobs, created a new web series, etc. Keeping busy!

Never knew about this (good review btw), but just based around knowing the idea and hardware,...dunno.  Would have been better as a 32X enhanced release tbh, b/c what's there in the vid...there's just way too much cut out.

Thanks, cap'n! Yeah, this Duke doesn't go very far when compared to the original game - be it on PC, Saturn, or PlayStation - though it's still fun, and it does add elements that were once left on the cutting room floor, like the "space walk" sequence, and the stage hazards.

However, I agree, Duke would have been better suited for 32X or Sega CD. Go ahead and keep the layouts as they are now - it's like having new levels, giving long-time fans a reason to revisit it - but add more of them, as well as more bosses. 10 levels, with the final being the one and only boss in the whole game, is pretty thin. Maybe 25-30 levels, with a boss every 5-10? Would have made it a fuller experience. It could have been called Duke Nukem: Overdrive, or Duke Nukem: Genesys! LOL!

So I take that to mean you don't think it would've had any impact in North America? Hahaha!

Thing is, by the time it came out the Saturn was already here (with the game). The impact in 1996 would be minimal. I admire the technical feat, but I didn't found it a lot of fun to play

1998. The Brazilian release was October of '98. Regardless, I agree, it wouldn't have had much of an impact had it been released in North America - or the rest of the world, perhaps - since the Saturn had already been released.

Yeah, it was a bit of a wait. I believe the Saturn version came in '97.
