Title: What are you watching?
Post by: Aki-at on May 25, 2015, 01:16:42 pm
Realised we didn't have one of these so I thought I'd boot one up;

Currently going on a bit of an anime phase and got three in particular I'm watching.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders 2nd season
Genre: Action Adventure

I've been meaning to check out the anime after hearing how faithful it's been to the manga and it doesn't disappoint. For those not in the know, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is about the Joestar family bloodline and how each generation takes on a different supernatural threat that threatens to destroy the world. Intense monologues that last longer than they should? Check, fabulous poses? Check, quirky fights and characters? Check. Basically a great adaptation of the source material

It seems that despite having a slow season 1 (I personally preferred the original JoJo series with Johnathan and Joesph.) the second season has been great so far and seems to be more sure of itself what it wants to be then the first season. Some great climaxes to the fights and/or tricks they play to be able to defeat their opponents. The only thing I've disliked is how long certain stories have been drawn out but overall the package.

Assassination Classroom

Genre: School Comedy

70% of the moon has been vaporised and the being behind the incident is threatening to blow up the Earth within a year. However he gives the Earth's government a chance, let him teach class 3-E and if anyone of his student's is able to assassinate him then the Earth is saved. Nicknamed Koro-Sensei but his pupils, the kids are trained in both their studies and assassination to kill their teacher. Assassination Classroom is a strange one and I don't think I've come across a story quite like it, combining life lessons and comedy quite well and comes across as a light hearted fun ride. Despite his threats to destroy the world, you can't help but like Koro Sensei thanks to how much of a nice guy he is and how he truly cares for his students. It also helps his antics go towards insanity.

Kekkai Sensen/Blood Blockade Battlefront

Genre: Action Comedy

From the creator of Trigun comes Blood Blockade Battlefront (Seriously why such a long winded name?!) about the group Libra that is made up of superhumans who act as the supernatural police of Hellsalem's Lot, formerly New York City. Hellsalem's Lot was created after a portal to the Beyond was opened and is now filled with all kinds of supernatural creatures that live side by side with humans. The show has Nightow's trademark humour found in Trigun also present in BBB and the animation and locales are all well done, the characters are pretty crazy (Klaus, centre, has to deal with Zapp, guy in white, trying to kill him every morning) all help to make the show and cast a memorable bunch.

I'll admit I had my reservation at first being a big fan of Trigun, the show seemed to be centred on the boy Leonardo but after watching the first 7 episodes I can say any fears I had (Such as focusing solely on Leo) was elevated, the show does a good job of making sure all casts members get an appearance. Only issue I have so far with it is that it might be a little too fast paced but if you liked Trigun I highly recommend it.

Assassination Classroom sounds absolutely insane, I have no idea how they came up with that one. Why does he want to teach a class? Is that his true passion or something? But why challenge the students to kill him!? Sounds funny.

I wanted to get into Jojo, is the manga finished?

As for the last one, BLOOD BLOCKADE, HELLSALEM! Did Rob Liefeld write that!? Sounds like fun though.

Veep being short for 'V.P.' or Vice President. It follows around the Vice President Selina Myers and her staff as they scheme and bungle through their term in power (or second in power). Constantly making power plays and willing to do anything to get ahead, the characters often betray eachother and their loyalties, or land themselves in hot water in risky plays. It reminds me a bit of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' in that most of the characters are utterly horrible and morally bankrupt, and in it's abrasive sense of humour.

The First two animes that Aki posted are really good, absolutely recommended.

Specially JoJo...gotta love that anime. I wasn't so much entertained with a Shonen in a long time.

Game of Thrones: Season 5. I find it funny that people online are freaking out that Sansa was raped in GOT, this is the show that had a whole family of girls enslaved to fuck their dads, with each baby being sacrificed to white walkers. People are really surprised that someone like Ramsey would rape Sansa, the guy that tortured and cut off Theon's dick. Right, you obviously where OK with all that and having some off screen 'marriage sex' is just too much.

Even though Sansa wasn't the one that married Ramsey, it was even worse in the books. In the books Arya and Sansa's child hood friend is sent to the North where the Boltons pretend she is Arya and Ramsey rapes her then lets his dogs (and reek) rape her in the dungeon. I wonder how people would shit their pants if they followed the book.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (OVA) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JoJo's_Bizarre_Adventure_(OVA)) is one of the few animes I've liked so I may have to give this new series a look.

Saw the Supergirl pilot.

Still too early to say anything. OK special effects, character's costume looks nice. Way too many nods to Superman. But overall, pretty good.

I've started watching the Daredevil Netflix show. Saw the first episode, pretty grimdark and humorless for your standard Marvel movie stuff.

Assassination Classroom sounds absolutely insane, I have no idea how they came up with that one. Why does he want to teach a class? Is that his true passion or something? But why challenge the students to kill him!? Sounds funny.

There's more to his backstory but I get the feeling it won't be explored in the anime, he does mention in episode 2 it's because he needs to keep a promise.

I wanted to get into Jojo, is the manga finished?

Manga is still going on but it's not really a problem. The series has time skips that introduces a new protagonist and villain, each new part (And there's currently seven) in the new manga is almost a reset with only a few characters returning from the previous parts. So you shouldn't have any problem jumping in, after one hero/heroine is finished it's a clean slate.

As for the last one, BLOOD BLOCKADE, HELLSALEM! Did Rob Liefeld write that!? Sounds like fun though.

Let the credit song perfectly illustrate what type of show it is with all the goodies and baddies partying and dancing.

https://vimeo.com/125364397

It's got a great cast too honestly, one of the side characters is Lucky Abrams. He's been cursed by vampires but due to his own actual luck, the curse is deflected from him and onto any individuals in his local area and he seems to be completely oblivious to it. So whenever he arrives most of the characters are set on panic mode.

Started watching the Boondocks, mostly to give me something to do while Steven Universe is on hiatus.

I also downloaded the entirety of Codename: Kids Next Door because a friend of mine is really into it and I wanted to see if it was still good. Making my way through that super slow, and I'm still unsure of it.

But Boondocks and SU are both really good, the former's a anime-like comedy with a lot of over-the-top satire and humor, mainly satirizing racial issues, but it's way funnier than it sounds.

Steven Universe sounded really dumb to me when I first heard about it, but I sat down to watch it and it's reaaaaaaally good, it starts like a monster of the week show, and very slowly but surely unravels a significantly bigger narrative about galactic war, an alternate timeline of Earth, the backstories and purposes of all the characters, etc. Basically, the first half of season one sets up the world, its characters, and their relationships with everything, and the second half deconstructs the hell out of it while also revealing a grand plot slowly making its way to the foreground.

^I adore Boondocks, I think it's a brilliant show. It can alternate so freely between political/racial satire and batshit insanity. They go from episodes that lampoon Obama and his election to an episode with Super-Saiyan Dragonball shit going on in a kick-ball game.

It's got so many great little moments where Macgruder just blatantly screams at the audience ("Every famous nigga that gets arrested is not Nelson Mandela!") to having very funny throwaway gags like Ghost Face Killa being an actual ghost ("Wait, you're not even dead...")

I also love that the fight scenes are actually really, really well choreographed.

So finished the Daredevil TV show...

I gotta say, I am impressed by the overall quality. Good production values. There are some genuine bonafide movie moments in there. Wilson Fisk is probably the most well written Marvel villain so far, mainly because the tv show takes it's time with him and his equally charming henchmen.

Matt Murdock himself is a pretty good character overal. Oddly enough his black suit was the best part of the show. Without giving away too much, this live-action version of the actual Daredevil suit was kinda... dissapointing. Plot-wise, it was pretty interesting, the show kinda slows down between episode 9 and 12, with not much happening, the season finale was very good.

The best part of the show are the fight scenes. And I'm taking Winter Soldier into account. I'm not sure how this will connect to the rest of the MCU or TVMCU, because tonally it's very different from the rest of the Marvel stuff that we've seen so far.

The other show I've been watching is Elementary. After I gave the middle finger to the show at the season 2 finale. I decided to force myself to give Season 3 a try. OK, I am glad to watch the show again. Since a couple of my shows are on hiatus, I need a detective show.

Yeah I really loved Daredevil and even if the portrayal of Wilson Fisk was the most different I've ever seen (A lot more sympathetic and tragic) it was my favourite Marvel villain by far. Wesley was another great addition to the cast but when I think about it, all the villains in this show put to shame most MCU baddies!

Can't wait to see the season season even if I felt the finale was utterly disappointing (I was expecting a good fight scene, instead it was something so generic and bland.)

I watched Ninja Scroll the other day for the first time in years. Great animated movie, I'd forgotten how beautiful some of the scenes were.

I love the basic story with some really great characters and fights rolled up into a really great self-contained film.
One of the few Anime I really love (alongside Castle of Cagliostro).

Man, what a massive improvement over the previous seasons. It's uncommon for shows to improve so much in a third season. And I feel like I got what I wanted, 24 straight episodes of solving crimes, some very well written, other OK at best. Never boring.

^I need to get into that, I heard it's great.

It is, without a doubt my favourite comedy series of all time. Hearing the thoughts of the two main characters is a stroke of genius. Their love/hate relationship, uncomfortable dependence on each other and general social awkwardness makes for some of the most glorious cringe comedy ever. Worst/best of all you're bound to see bits of yourself in them that you wish you didn't... Its comedy perfection imo.

Back to watching some older shows:

Yes Minister - Bit of a classic this one, it's kind of amazing how these characters are all based on real life politicians and some of their schemes (Shipping alcohol with them to a Muslim country and "hiding" it as orange juice) are based on real life events. If only politics was this funny still, we might have some cool people to vote for.

Shirokuma Cafe - Despite a slow opening I really love this show now and I'm only on episode 10! All the characters play really well off of each other and some of the exchanges are really good too. It's also a great show to pick up and drop so you don't have to blast through it in one viewing, it's been months since I started watching this show but I'm familiar enough with it that I can drop it for a while and pick it right back up when I feel I need a laugh.

Highly recommended if you like some oddball (And I do mean oddball) humour.

As someone like me who is not a fan of Naruto or Naruto Shippuden, I have to say I am very impressed by The Last: Naruto the Movie. It's a romantic dramedy that has just the right amount of action. The last 15 minutes (including credits) actually made me tear up. Can't remember the last time a movie, let alone an anime made me do that.

So Naruto helped get back into anime. Been bingewatching it like crazy. I cannot wait to finish it so I can jump in to Shippuden.

And because I hate myself so much, I took a little break from Naruto before I get sick of it and decided to watch something different:

Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai (My Little Sister Can't Be this Cute)

If this synopsis doesn't freak you out and make you take a cold shower, then things should go smoothly... Basically, it's about a brother and sister who for many years have treated each other like complete strangers despite the fact that they were such good childhood friends. One day Kyosuke finds out that her sister (Kirino) has been stockpilling a ton of "little sister"-themed erotic pc games. Kyosuke uses this opportunity to help her sister out of her addiction, help her find new friends and fix their broken relantionship.  As time goes by, however, both protagonists find themselves in a very strange place as it becomes obvious that Kirino has strong feelings towards her big brother.

After watching all the 32 episodes (like I mentioned before, I hate myself), this anime sends some very mixed signals... On the one hand, it's clear as day that they want us, the audience, to feel for Kirino and Kyosuke's relantionship, in particular how it evolves into something a little more intimate (for the record, they are not step-siblings, which is often the case in these types of risqué animes, they are blood-related and this series is loud and proud about it). But on the other, this often feels like an Otaku / Erotic Games PSA, because none of the characters, be it the friends, be it the parents, be it Kyosuke's ex-girlfriends and even our main heroes aren't that stupid. What the characters appear to be doing is bad / unacceptable and we are beaten over the head with that message every single solitary episode. But once again, mixed signals overall:  the series is proud to be risqué, but on the other hand it's very tame when compared to your standard ecchi / harem series, way more romantic dramedy then gratutious and shallow nudity, pantsu jokes and general lewdness.

Got into Rick and Morty on a whim. I looked up the first ep not really planning on liking it, and ended up watching the entire series so far in one go. It's kind of like Invader ZIM in terms of tone, pacing, and timing, just with slightly less aliens and more swearing. The gore level's about the same though (man ZIM was grotesque as fuck for 2002).

Basically, this old dude is living with his daughter and her family, and takes his grand son on adventures, usually of the interdimensional variety. If you're into really fast-paced, dark humor, you'll probably like it. A lot of people compare it to Futurama, but aside from the "going on space adventures" part, they're really nothing alike.

Watched the first two episodes of The Flash, season 2. Pretty good so far. Also been watching Be Cool, Scooby Doo. Had to admit that after SD: Mistery Incorporated (arguably the most mature and clever SD series), I was a little skeptical about this new series. But it turns out that the shift towards comedy works just as well.

So right now I am very deeply invested in Naruto Shipuuden. I'm done with the Pain Story Arc (arguably the best story arc in Shipuuden so far) and I'm early into the Danzo / Five Kages Summit Story Arc. Shipuuden has a massive problem with filler episodes, it's not just filler with villain of the week with downgraded animation, there's also a ton of redundant flashbacks. I mean, you might get at least 30 episodes that are cannon and then about 20 or so episodes of stuff that's irrelevant (or repetitive). Ever so often, they'll shove two episodes that have nothing to do with anything in the middle of an important story arc.

Good grief, no wonder Naruto Shippuden has such a bad rep. The amount of fillers during the 4th Great Ninja War are just insane. They will literally start an episode that seems canonical only for them to fill the entire episode with either flashbacks or a completely unrelated subplot. The flashbacks are getting annoying too, I mean, I've already seen the same events of the Nine Tails Attack unfold for the third time from sligthy different points of view (Naruto's birth, Tobi's involvement, Minato and Kushina's death), talk about getting cheap.

The 4th Great Ninja War would be an otherwise wicked cool Story Arc but keeps getting bogged down by fillers.

If I were to list the best moments from both Naruto and Shippuden, so far I'd say:

Chunnin Exams
Sasuke Rescue Attempt
Pain's Assault on the Hidden Leaf Village
Naruto and Killer B Train and Kushina's Backstory
Five Kage Summit
Gaara's Rescue
Sasuke vs Itachi

Watched the new episode of "Top Gear" with Chris Evans.

Well, I say watched...I just couldn't. As expected, it's just not the same without Clarkson, Hammond and May. Don't think the BBC understand that the reason it worked before was they were actually friends and not manufactured for sole purpose of the show.

Sabine was great and once he shakes off the nerves I think Leblanc will be good too. He certainly shined in the off studio work. Chris Evans though was exactly what I suspected and I think he'll be the biggest issue. He's just too controlling and overpowering thoughout the show.

I also watched the latest episode of Dragonball Super and it seems like it's finally getting somewhere. The last 10/15 episodes have felt very much like the foundations of this much bigger DB universe, but now we're finally going to see it and a real story on the way.

My only complaint is how they've sort of written themselves into a corner with the characters. Goku and Vegeta are still the only ones able to be in the spotlight and everyone else seems to be just background noise. Gohan has become extremely weak, while Goten and Trunks (Gotenks too) have become comedy characters. It would be nice to see some character development from Goten and Trunks and sort of desire to be the "next" warriors as well as having a laugh.

Speaking off, I kind of want to see humans brought back into it all. Perhaps due to training with Whis or something, they discover a transformation or something.

Since Naruto Shippudden is currentely in filler limbo, I've been watching other series... and as such I've been bingewatching Fairy Tail. Fairy Tail falls into the same category as Dragon Ball / Naruto / One Piece / Bleach, it's a shounen-type that along with Naruto has a surprisingly amount of dramatic moments. It's a story about Natsu, a boy raised by a Dragon who works for a guild named Fairy Tail. The Fairy Tail guild is full of silly characters with magical abilities who make a living taking several odd jobs. Like Gray, an ice sorcerer that keeps losing his own clothes, Erza, who is an uptight and insanely powerful sorcerer (though secretely she's into bondage), Makarov, the kooky old man who is the guild's grand master. Elfman who is a manly mam that can transform as well as his little sister Mirajane who is magazine model and bartender. Jet, Droy, Levy and several other characters that are interesting enough to not feel like they are just there to fill background. And Lucy, the big breasted sorceress (a rich girl who ran away from home to live on her own) who is actually the real protagonist, since a lot of the action and events are seen in her perspective. And unlike Naruto Shippudden which prominentely features the secondary characters in filler episodes, the entire cast of Fairy Tail plays an important role in nearly all the important story arcs.

Having said that... It's one of those weird cases in which the anime ends, but the manga, however is still onging. And having said that, the anime surprisingly ends in a pretty depressing way. The anime has it's fair share of tear jerking moments, but the ending of the TV series is a little too much, to be honest.

But depressing stuff aside, anime geeks who love fan service will get a kick out of Fairy Tail. There isn't one episode that does not feature silly antics with at least one of the major female protaganists in the roster in an embarrasing situation. Namely Lucy who gets the motherload of fan service-y moments.

It just isn't the same. It feels like nothing has anyway weight to it and although the series did need to stop being so serious, Super has no tension at all now. Everything feels like fluff and pointless.

The Simpsons

I tend to wait till the season is done then watch them over a week. Despite all the negativity it gets, I don't think Simpsons is as bad as they say. Yes, some episodes are really weak, but there's still more good than bad. In Season 27, there's probably only 2/3 bad episodes with the rest turning out to be quite good. Barthood was a fun alterative timeline story, Halloween of Horror felt like it felt right out of classic Simpsons too. Really enjoyed this series like the others despite some issues.

Dragon Ball Super

I want to be this show's devil's advocate so badly... 'cause I like what Dragon Ball Super is trying to do. When compared to shows like Fairy Tail, Naruto, One Piece and other shonen style cartoons, outside of the fighting, there's nothing else in Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball Super tries to be a little closer to the original Dragon Ball manga (I mean the early comedic kung fu) not just in tone, but also in world building.
I did not even know Zeny was the in-universe currency (One Piece has Beli and Naruto uses Kyo as currency), that alone gives the Dragon Ball universe a little more personally beyond two characters figthing in a barren wasteland. Add in alternate universes and time travel to make things a little complex. Having said that... I do have some issues...

The animation in some of these episodes has been nothing short of horrendous, like Sonic X level of horrible. Some of the story arcs are very hit or miss.

This is my approach to The Simpsons and Family Guy. You can fit in about 3 episodes in an hour if you skip the commercials.

I think the show gets a bit much hate. It's simply because it's rarely sentimental anymore.

The original writers always hated being forced to add that sentimentality into their scripts. I guess they got what they wanted in the end, but it's turned a lot of people off of anything past seasons 8 or 9.

Just like Saturday Night Live, there are good runs of the show from time to time. We'll probably watch it at my house until they pull the plug, then just continue watching old episodes until our memories fail.

I didn't know the original writers didn't like adding sentimental stuff. It's a real shame if true, as there's some amazingly touching moments in the show that really added depth and made it different. Moments like "you are Lisa Simpson", Mother Simpson and "do it for her.".

I don't agree with the whole Zombie Simpsons feature (though it does bring some good points). I think the show has just changed of course, but not to the lengths that feature makes out. As I see it:

S1 - 3 = show building foundations
S4 - 8 = it hit it's stride.
S9 - 16 = The characters became defined by only one of their characteristics such as homer being a jerk, Lisa being smart, Bart being a "monster" while the balance of show and cartoon slipped too far into the cartoon area.
S17 - Now = we've seen the characteristics get more balanced, but the show is still a bit too cartoony in humour.

Mr. Robot. The show is coming to its conclusion for the season next week as a two parter episode and this show gets better and better the more they unveil. I approve of them ripping off the SEGA font.

I don't buy that the original writers of The Simpsons didn't like having sentimentality in their scripts. Having listened to commentaries for most episodes up through season 17 it sounds like it all depends on the writer. Some lean sentimental, others don't. The staff sounded very proud of episodes like Marge Be Not Proud and Bart Sells His Soul.

Now I would say that show runners play a part in the tone of the show, and Mike Scully was notorious for off the wall humor and more mean spirited characterizations. If anything, it was Al Jean that brought sentimentality back to the series when he took over in season 13. The Critic, which Jean ran before returning to The Simpsons was almost too sentimental and schmaltzy at times. Recent seasons have had some real good heartfelt stories, and I think the staff actively try and pull at the heartstrings and go sentimental. They don't always succeed, but recent episodes like I Won't Be Home For Christmas, To Cur With Love, Holidays of Future Past, Halloween of Horror and How I Wet Your Mother went the emotional route and were effective. Holidays of Future Past was particularly poignant when adult Bart and Lisa reconnected while drunk in the treehouse. It was meant to be the series finale, and a part of me wished it was or that they shelved the episode for a finale because it was so good.

We obviously don't know when, but Al Jean said he thinks the show should end with the parents going to a Christmas school show so it sort of loops back round to how it started.

Another popular idea was from a fan who thought the last episode should be about giving someone a chance to write a itchy & scratchy episode. All The Simpsons decide to enter the competition and go about their daily lives with the winner being announced with their episode airing. The Simpsons then rush home to sit on the settee to watch it - just how every episode starts.

Also, just to add...

I think it's a real shame they didn't keep making the seasons on DVD etc. Here in the UK, it's quite difficult to watch new episodes unless you have the ridiculously expensive Sky TV and even then it's not on demand etc. With the Simpsons World being US only, we're left with it being difficult to actually keep up to date.

Lemme take a deep breath first...

Naruto Shippudden already has a tainted reputation thanks to the gigantic amount of fillers. It doesn't help one bit that be in anime form, or manga form that Kayuga is arguably one of the worst "final" antagonists. Spoilers: The fillers already removed so the urgency to the conflict, but it was even more insulting that Kayuga was beaten in less than 3 episodes. Everything lead to her revival which was the big twist as we learn that Madara was just a pawn in Zetsu's plan. She made no impact because nobody in that fight knew her, by the time the first Hokage was in power, she was a legend, largely kept out of the history books. So her revival doesn't have the emotional payoff and it makes Madara's final demise feel a bit flat, because what he and Obito was planned was so completely off that their redemption feels a little off. Also for all the menace Kaguya posed and the enormous range of her powers it seemed counter-productive to place all of our heroes into a seperate dimension to do what? Mortally stab Naruto and Sasuke with Pain's sharp metal sticks. She clearly didn't think this through because doing all that ate away most of her chakra. Clearly she's not a fighter.

What I see in Kayuga in both the manga and the anime is a clumsy as well s rushed transition to the real final story arc.

Goblin Slayer.
I like the manga, so happy to see it's adapted into anime.
Too bad the anime's famous for wrong reason.

Went back to watching "The Da Vinci Code." May just be a decent movie, but all the same, one of my favorites.

I really love The Orville.  That show is not only a spiritual successor to Star Trek TNG, but it also has the best humor since Galaxy Quest.  I freakin' loved the episodes with issac turning on The Orville and the alternate timelines season 2 finale.  It also manages to do hot button topics and political correctness right, while being able to satire modern day problems as well as make you think like real science fiction should!

All around great series.  Can't wait for season 3!  I hope it DESTROYS Star Trek Discovery in the ratings.  Discovery is crap.

Did you ever notice in Big Bang Theory there's a Beat figurine in the living room?
