Title: Rank the Marvel Studios Movies
Post by: Barry the Nomad on May 10, 2010, 07:57:54 am
With 'Iron Man 2' hitting theaters, I've started to look back at all the Marvel Studios films and realized that Marvel dominates the super hero film genre: 28 films in only 12 years! Damn, that beats out the number of Bond films and craps all over the DC comics films (roughly 15 in the last 60 years and only half of them being good).

So my question is this: Where do you rank the Marvel Studios films that you've seen?

For an idea of what films I'm talking about, check out the Marvel Studios wiki page (http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Studios) or go by anything released after and including Blade (1998).

My list by a 10 point rating system:

10/10: X-Men 2, Spider-Man 2
9/10: Iron Man 2, Spider-Man
8/10: Iron Man, X-Men
7/10: Spider-Man 3, The Incredible Hulk, Daredevil: Director's Cut
6/10: Hulk, X-Men: The Last Stand, Daredevil
5/10: Hulk, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, X-Men Origins: Wolverine
4/10: Fantastic Four, The Punisher (2004)
3/10: Elektra
2/10: Ghost Rider
1/10: nothing yet

Yes, I'll admit I liked Daredevil. It's a guilty pleasure of mine. Michael Clarke Duncan and Jon Favreau plus the origin story are my favorite bits. I also liked the imagery they used for "seeing sounds" and thought the action was entertaining. The Director's Cut fixes many problems the theatrical film had and is a recommended rental for those who like superhero movies.

You must be kidding (or on crack) to think that X-Men 1 or 2 are 1/10 films. Though I would agree that Wolverine and The Last Stand were garbage.

10/10 - (none)
9/10 - (none)
8/10 - (none)
7/10 - (none)
6/10 - (none)
5/10 - (none)
4/10 - Spider-Man
3/10 - Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, X-Men
2/10 - Iron Man
1/10 - Hulk, X-Men: The Last Stand, Ghost Rider, Elektra, The Punisher (either one), Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Daredevil, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men 2, Captain America

I haven't seen Iron Man 2, but if the reviews are any indication (http://http://www.ultraculture.co.uk/3335-iron-man-2-review.htm), it would most likely be going in the 2 or 1 out of 10 slot.

Looks like 'Kick Ass' IS technically a Marvel film! It's owned by Icon Comics. Per the internets: "Icon Comics is an imprint of Marvel Comics for creator-owned titles."

I haven't seen 'Kick A' or 'Kick A@$' (as the theater marquee and censored poster named it respectively). I'll definitely rent it though.

Barry, we get you love X-Men. But I don't LOL

I wouldn't say I love the X-Men (don't read the comics, never owned a game) but I admit that the first two were quality superhero movies. Definitely not 1/10's.

Fabio, I'm interested to know what other films make you fall asleep. Just to get where you're coming from.

btw, your name is Fabio, correct? Just askin' as we're on a first name basis.  :afroman:

My top 10 would probably be:

1.  Spider-man 2
2.  X-men 2
3.  Spider-man
4.  Iron Man 2
5.  Iron Man
6.  Blade 2
7.  Incredible Hulk
8.  Spider-man 3
9.  Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer  (solid action, and I thought Chris Evans did a great job as the human torch.
10. Daredevil: Director's Cut

Me calling you Barry really got on your nerves hey?  :P  Yes, you are correct about my name.

Usually really bland films. It's not very common, but like catastrophe films, for example. Thing with X-Men is really that I did not knew anything about them before I watched the movies, and after them I still wasn't interested a shit about them. The action is much too dry, the dialog bland and innocuous, the whole story pretty much sucks.. I just did not found them fun. And yes I DID fell asleep, I'm not joking about it.

Ha ha, no, if I got annoyed at peeps calling me by "Barry", I wouldn't have this silly username. :)
Actually, I was halfway through typing "Crackdude" and realized how absurd it is that I'm typing that as a proper name, so I told myself "if I can find your real name within one Google search, then it's not creepy internet stalking". Luckily, I found your secret identity!

Btw, according to Google you are a model hunk and I am a Korean swordmaster living in Texas. I smell new ideas for the next 'King of Fighters'!

Np on the X-men. I just get annoyed when people say they fell asleep during a movie when they in fact did not. It's like saying "I vomited while watching 'Saw'" when I actually was mildly aroused.

Well I'm pretty open on people know my real name on the internet. What will "you" do? Call my name to death?  :afroman:

Fabio is the name of that model hunk that used to appear in those erotic women books, popular in the 90s!
My mother tells me that she got the idea off a Brazilian singer though.

Yes, and I do tend to hyperbole a lot as you may notice around here, but there are things I actually fell asleep on.. Like Halo 2 and the X-Man movies. One of them I was at my girlfriend's place, and she was meh and this friend of ours was loving every bit of it and I was like "god this bald guy is really tripping balls" and zzZzzzZzz

I'm going to focus on the Punisher movies for now, since theres quite a bit to say about them for me.

The Punisher (Tom Jane) 4 Stars: The movie that got me back into the Punisher. After knowing more about the character though, I think this was a great Revenge flick, but not a good Punisher movie. The whole reason for the Punisher's existence is that his family was killed in a way that was purely coincidental. They were in the park and stumbled onto a Mafia hit and were gunned down. It could have happened to anyone and was completely senseless. In the movie they changed it so that rather than just being an ex-soldier trying to live a civilian life, he was an FBI agent who had his family specifically targeted. This means of course that the whole thing was personal, and everything the Punisher does is an act of 'revenge'. Some stuff was still great though, the fight with the Russian was handled really well I thought for example. The action scenes were just generally really good too.

The Punisher: Warzone (Ray Stevenson): 2.5 Stars - This is the biggest heart-breaker I've ever, ever seen in my life. It really is. I had been following the Punisher follow up since it was called 'Untitled Punisher Sequel' with a number of other die-hard fans, praying for something good. We almost lost all hope when Thomas Jane walked out on the role saying that the movie was shaping up badly (and I've read the script he rejected, I don't blame him), but then suddenly it all turned around. The movie had a code-name of 'Welcome Back Frank' (after the Garth Ennis mini-series that revived the character for modern day) and Ray Stevenson of ROME fame was signed on to play Frank. Ray Stevenson IS the Punisher, it couldn't be more perfect. We even got an Oscar Nominated director in Lexi Alexander to helm the movie. There was no way this could turn out badly.

Except it did.

Lionsgate Films was really unstable at the time. The wife of the first movie's director (Jonathan Hensleigh) was the producer of this movie, Gale Hurd. There was rumours from day one that she was unhappy about someone else taking over the franchise and didn't care to see this movie succeed. I can't really speculate on that, but reports from the set did claim that she was hardly ever there or willing to help out.

Things got worse when the filming was done and many places and rumours were saying that Lexi Alexander was actually removed from the movie and that Lionsgate were making some heavy edits to the movie (including some stories about including lots of Heavy Metal music). I remember making an online petition (the only time I've ever done one) that was signed by members of the cast and crew (I was dubious, but I actually got an email from Lexi Herself thanking me and saying that it was the actual crew members who signed it. This came via IMDB and also passed on via someone who had communicated with her directly before, so I'm pretty sure it was legit). Shortly after LionsGate revealed a new trailer/excerpt with Lexi Alexander introducing it, giving us a lot of relief.

Unfortunately, there was more trouble in the pipeline. The head of LionsGate films retired and was replaced by a new guy. The new guy apparantly didn't like the direction his predecessor was taking the company and almost out of sheer malice, decided to kill off a lot of the films made under him. The most obvious was 'Midnight Meat Train' a horror movie that had been getting good reviews/reception from focus groups suddenly had it's marketing budget slashed to ribbons and it's release was cut down to the absolute minimum number of cinemas allowed for a theatrical release. It was sent to die a horrible box office death. The Punisher wasn't quite so bad, but it's Christmas release date and anorexic marketing budget really hurt it. It even went straight to DVD in Australia/UK, and even that was months and months after the inintial release.

The biggest problem for me though: The script. It went through several re-writes and edits, and it's clear in the end movie that the script was the major problem. The Director had done a great job but the storyline was just plain bad. I didn't know if they wanted it to be a Straight up Crime Story like Marvel MAX Punisher, or a more light hearted action romp like Punisher from Marvel Knights. We ended up with a bizarre mix with some great moments that were classic MAX punisher (Shooting a man's face off with a shotgun, while carrying a child in one arm) and some out-of-place Knights stuff (Detective Soap...).

The worst thing is, they could have taken a storyline from the comics and with Lexi's great direction, Ray Stevenson and the wonderful cinematography we could have had THE Punisher movie, instead we got some weird story with a villian from the 70s making a super-gang to kill the punisher, with lots of violence.

Fingers crossed, someday we'll get the Punisher movie the character deserves...

Oh shit.
I totally forgot about the Punisher.
Pop the Tom Jane one in at my number 3.  It was really refreshing to see a good solid action movie with practical stunts and effects. Loved that fight with the Russian.

On first viewing I HATED The Tom Jane Punisher movie. Then my roommate told me to rewatch it with "cheesy 80's flick" in mind and I loved it.

Oh yeah, it's just a good old fashioned revenge flick as far as i'm concerned. I loved it.

Have you seen Sin City and/or Swamp thing? ;3

OH YES!!!

Also thought V for Vendetta and Watchmen where well made. Does the Tales of the Crypt show count? Obviously a fan of that, based on those comics (even though they like calling them magazines >.>)

I wouldn't exactly consider giving high praise to these summer popcorn flicks to be indicative of refined tastes, as they are not even close to being works of art.

If anything, your ratings speak badly about your tastes and possibly reflect general inexperience with better action adventure stories.

Fair enough.  There are some really solid comic book movies that don't really have anything to do with super heroes, like Ghost World, and Road to Perdition
