E-Z: Streets of Rage 3, Roo!

@ Ribi: Googling takes the fun out of the equation, if you don't know it stay quiet.
-
Don't know that one, but I will take part in this if someone else answers it without using Wikipedia, which is what I would've done.
-
I've only played the Japanese and American version of the game, I don't even remember the Euro version.
Come on Barry just tell us and be gentle on the next question.
-
No way would i give an answer! you 1337 SEGA fans should know the answer, should come natural to you. like a brotha who knows the recipie for the perfect afro, you just know it.
-
Well most of them are just Sonic or contemporary SEGA fans who get excited about games made by Creative Assembly, Sports Interactive and Platinum Games.
Anyway now I officially know the answer and if no one steps up I will reveal it in 24 hours.
There are 3 tracks exclusive to PAL Regions.

I actually already know The Recipie for the Perfect Afro.
You need to do a lot of back combing and be a Funky Plucker
(I listened to this sound track in my friends car for a good number of years!)
Well most of them are just Sonic or contemporary SEGA fans who get excited about games made by Creative Assembly, Sports Interactive and Platinum Games.
Oh do shut up already! I've had just about enough of your elitist prick attitude.
There is NOTHING wrong with anyone liking Creative Assembly, Sports Interactive or Platinum Games.
Sega have OWNED CA and SI and partnered with Platinum Games longer then Team Andromida even existed, Sega Technical Insistitue only made games between 1992 and 1996 thats only 4ish years...
So what exactly constitutes a /real sega fan/... Because to me it sure as hell isnt someone thatll play crap games JUST becuase some guy worked on it in 1669.
-
BOOSH!
The guy who plays Creative Assembly, Sports Interactive and Platinum Games titles gets my question right! Cube is put in his place!
Ask a question Sharky, and make it a tough one.
-
Yeah, but that brilliant fool forgot to do the next part.
-
POST THE QUESTION!

Name one of Ryo Hazuki's best friends from Shenmue I.

I think Sharky has to post the question, but Naoyuki Ito? Is that who you are looking for? Replaying Shenmue right now : P.

I don't know, I just posted one. To just get the game moving quicker.

Name the 3 Sega developed Onrail Shooters released on the 'Sega Chihiro' Arcade board.

I know this I KNOW IT! I think..... I don't want people to think I am cheating so I will explain why I know the answers: I am pretty sure Chihiro was Xbox based, and Xbox had HotD III. So HotD III is one of my guesses, I am also quite sure the skating game you are asking for is Ollie King, I know about that one because I am pretty sure it was one of Smilebit's last games, right? I remember it at least looking like Jet Grind Radio. Then G4 had a piece with Adam Sessler where he reviewed Virtua Cop III in the arcades, he mentioned that because it was Chihiro it might have a chance of a port. That is my second...
My final guess, is Ghost Squad, Euro Gamer mentioned in their review of it that it was originally on Chihiro hardware.

Spot on, well done!
(points for showing your workings!)

Alright...... uhhhh. Name the following two SEGA arcade fighters:
Sega's first attempt at a 3D fighting game, before VF, was called ____ and featured 2D sprites that you could move into the foreground and out into the background creating a '3D' effect. It received an arcade only release.
Sega AM-2 made this 2D fighter, the story took place inside of a nation that was somewhat of an odd choice for the time. Looking for name of the fighting game here, and if you are a true sega bad-ass, the nation that the storyline was based in, I'll accept the name of the 'city' if you don't know the name of the nation. Also arcade only.
-
Arabian Fight? I'm guessing because it's the only 2D fighting AM2 game I can think of. The female lead was a part of the SEGA Gals figurine collection, I never liked her figure. The feet were wonky and she can't stand up straight.

That is not it good sir, wasn't that more of beat em up anyways? Also, wtf are points? I checked the OP, no mention of points.... Is this a game?
-
Champion Ship Boxer?
That was Suzuki's first game and... it was also RIEKO KODAMA's FIRST GAME. But doesn't match your description. Nonetheless fun trivia.
Also this Arabian Night game seems pretty nice:
Nice detailed HD Sprites (not HD HD, but way better then what the Genesis could display), and 4 player support. Neither Golden Axe nor Streets of Rage had such features.
AM2 does what other studios don't.

I fucking love you Cube, never change. Still I think SOR would have had four player if the Genny could support that many sprites on screen at once, I think it just would have pushed the hardware a tad too much. Treasure did some kick-ass multi-tap stuff with Guardian Heroes on Saturn though.
Also it isn't Championship Boxer, unfortunately.
A reminder to everyone that the '3D' fighter one is admittedly pretty tough, do keep in mind that the sprites are 2D and they rotate, they can turn their backs to the screen and all that jazz, and they can face it. They can also circle their opponents. NO CHEATING! And no I didn't look this up before asking to make this a hard question, I legitimately know it because I had a high interest in SEGA's fighting franchises and experiments in the genre outside of VF.
The female lead was a part of the SEGA Gals figurine collection, I never liked her figure. The feet were wonky and she can't stand up straight.
I bet you love that Honey figure
Oh, and still, what are points? LOL
-
No points, whoever answers correct asks the next question. Sadly, I was wrong... :(
-
I admit, I had to look up the answer to this one... I had never heard of it before but it looks like an amazing game.
-
I too tried to look up the answer, but couldn't find it :S.
-
I too tried to look up the answer, but couldn't find it :S.
Two of the voice actors in the game are pretty relevant to SEGA today, though I just checked and am unsure if one of them still works at SEGA because his last title in MobyGames was between 1-5 years ago. I am not gonna be too specific, haha.
I admit, I had to look up the answer to this one... I had never heard of it before but it looks like an amazing game.
Did you find both the 3D game and the 2D? I think you probably found the 2D, the 3D would be harder to find by googling.
Also thanks to everybody being honest, the people who googled not answering and what not.
Uhhh, should I just say what they are? Seems everybody who participates in this thread has already guessed/looked it up. What happens if nobody guesses? Do I ask again? Or is somebody randomly selected, we oughta try and force a new person in.
-
Take a week, if no one guesses you win again therefore you get to quiz us again, and if nobody answers then you get to repeat the process till you meet your maker.

Alright, then I guess I will start thinking about the question for next wednesday in case nobody gets it. Of course I did actually break the rules and ask two questions, should we use one of the games I asked about already for the second week? Or in the future should I just now obey the rule that we only ask one question?
Given nobody gets it by next wednesday of course.
-

Hmm... what I found basically looked like a 2D sprite-scaling game within a 3D space, and the fighters are sprites drawn from multiple angles so it seems they can circle around each other, the camera seems to be able to move forward and back depending on where the fighters are. The backgrounds are static images but the ground plane has some small details on it so you get a sense of motion as the camera moves. Really cool diverse character designs. I didn't Google it but managed to find just enough about it to see that there's not much about it on the internet!
-
Maybe we can do a feature on it then :P.

Ok, so you found the 3D game. Not the 2D fighter Sega AM2 worked on, good job on that. I was pretty sure it'd be difficult to find via searching.
-
Got bad news, I am bored, revealing answers in 3, 2, 1:
The answer to SEGA's first attempt at a 3D fighting game? IS, Dark EDGE!
[youtube:3a46h4tb]SZK9Fix4AVM[/youtube:3a46h4tb]
And the answer to the 2D AM2 fighter? Toshihiro Nagoshi voiced a character, I believe named Jake, but don't quote me on that. It's called Burning Rival and the odd country choice for the time was Canada, it took place in a fictional city called Destiny City, Canada.
Also, in the future I will be sure to follow the one question rule! No more two separate game nonsense!
-
Next question punks, this one could be hard, not sure.
GET READY!!!!!!!
ROLLING START!!!!!!!
What Sega game is this and what platform was it for (obvious, very obvious)? Bonus question; Which super relevant and important Sega developer worked on this?
x 2 the Sega references for good measure, hope you enjoyed the last question. Don't bother trying to tineye the image as I made sure it couldn't be! Mwahahahahahaha!!!!!
-
Oh wow, I would've loved to play a Street Fighter game like Burning Rival. While an Amazing take on 2D (I would love to see something new like this) but typical of AM2 they lack personality.
OutRun, Hang-On, After Burner, Virtua Fighter or anything it seems AM2 go out of their way to make generic characters at one point during Shenmue's development they wanted Ryo to be Ryu.
-
I'm going to go right out and call you out that Am2 doesn't show personality.
-

Well I don't know about that, I mean After Burner, Hang-On, kind of hard to make characters for racing games or dog fighters. I think Out Run has good characters, for a racing game.
Also, you mean Akira, not Ryu : P, that is Street Fighter.
-
No, I mean Ryu. That was the first choice for his name, AM2 decidedly wanted to give him a common name.
They wanted Ryo to be just like another teenager, from Japan ofcourse if they really wanted that they should have made him much shorter.
-
The Answer is Pyramid Magic, it was for Mega Drive/Genesis and Hirokazu Yasuhara was the major dev involved.
Next question is easy, everybody should know this! Who is Carol Yas?
-
I know this one he is one of the 3 Sonic creators?
I think it is Hirokazu Yashura only as Naoto Oshima was Big Island, Yuji Naka was either Yu2 or Muji Yuji.
-

Haha, finally somebody got it! It is H. Yasuhara.
-
HAHAHAH
Alright this one is very important:
Who used to make Sega employees chant
HAYUAKUMANDAI (HAKU MANDAI)
Every fucking morning durring a certain era.
And what does Hayakumandai mean?
-
I don't know, but I think in the U.S., outside of some sort of paramilitary organization, it would be impossible to get workers to chant together. So that rules out Bernie Stolar.
-
I am pretty sure what they were chanting isn't something in english.
-

Wal-Mart >.>
-
This is a very historic event in SEGA history, and it should be a pre-requisite for any one claiming to be hardcore SEGA.
-
I just looked it up. At least I'm softcore now!
-
How cool was it?
-
haha, very cool. It was indeed a crucial era of Sega history!
-
HAHAHAH
Alright this one is very important:
Who used to make Sega employees chant
HAYUAKUMANDAI (HAKU MANDAI)
Every fucking morning durring a certain era.
And what does Hayakumandai mean?
Nakayama, during the Genny era. It meant to "sell a million units". I admit I cheated and Googled it.
-
WTF WTF!!! YOU DIDN'T NEED TO GIVE THE ANSWER THEN!!!
Your disqualified now I have to think of another quesion.
Basically in order to boost team morale Nakayama would make the entire SOJ team chant Hayakumandai (Million) at the end of every morning assembly in the first year of MegaDrive.
-
Heh, sorry...but in my defense it had been ten days and when I Googled it, there was only one result, and it was in a book. So....
-
Alright next question:
This one is from a relatively recent franchise that SEGA Owns.
It is a quote:
- My friends they call me the Cyber Cow Boy
- The rest of us call you an asshole
- Funny. I like that Ass Hunter, now I enjoy watching you die.
(A mechanical spider climbs his back, and he grabs it affectionately) Acid for Venom, Steel for a heart Just like their Papa.
Guess the name of the game, this is basically a freebie.
-
What on earth... I suck at this game
-
Don't Worry I've not played some great inhouse SEGA games such as NiGHTS.
This however was only published by SEGA it is one of the best games for Dreamcast, and don't compare it the inferior sequel this game is gold.
[youtube:drecnyz0]ILeu_TeQIFo[/youtube:drecnyz0]
It happens around 1:15 Seconds.
Next question:
Name the Dreamcast developer that released their first game on Dreamcast and SEGA published it well after the Dreamcast had died in America.
Clue: SEGA also marketed one of their games as "the last game" for Dreamcast, surprisingly 3 more licensed games were released after it.
-
Oh man, Headhunter... I always wanted to play that. Why wasn't the sequel as good as the first one?
-
A clue: They helped with Ikaruga.
For god sake man they made the last Sega published game for Dreamcast!
-
I'm breaking the rules and am asking a question:
In how many Dreamcast games did Spider-Man appear in?
-
Let's see.
Spider-Man
Marvel Vs Capcom
Marvel Vs Capcom 2
3?
-
Ah! You're missing one!
-
Give me a clue?
I'm sure i've played it.
-
clue:
-
Damn it, I've not played it.
He was an unlockable character in Tony Hawks or something?
-
Damn it, I've not played it.
He was an unlockable character in Tony Hawks or something?
He was an unlockable in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
-
I WON!!!!
HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Let me think of a question now... but I should probably answer the last one first since no one guessed it.
G.Rev made there first game on Dreamcast by helping co-develop Ikaruga with Treasures. The following year they made Border Down for Dreamcast which Treasures helped in Co-Developing.
The last game to be marketed as Dreamcast's last game was Under Defeat.
Although it wasn't the last licensed Dreamcast game it sold so well that other developers came in and produced more games but this was the last game publishied by SEGA.
So the question is what was the last licensed game for Dreamcast... Hint it was a shooter.
-
So the question is what was the last licensed game for Dreamcast... Hint it was a shooter.
Karous !!!
Am I right?
Let me have the question now.
I live in Indonesia.
What is the most succesful SEGA's arcade game in my country for 2014 and 2015?
They are the same game btw.
(Yeah, arcade's still alive in my country.
Hint : There is even lover community for the game and a tournament for it)

Absolutely correct! It only took 5 years! :D
Is it Star Wars related?
-
Absolutely correct! It only took 5 years! :D
LOL
Is it Star Wars related?
No, it is not. :)
Second hint : more than half people who enter the tournament are females !!!
-
Third hint : most veteran players puts on gloves while playing this game to avoid injury.
-
Maimai??
-
Maimai??
Yesss !!! Correct !!! It's Maimai.
Here's a reward.
A oneshot comic made a joke about how Maimai arcade looks like.
-
Ha-ha, yes. Maimai is hella addictive.
Alright, my turn!
Name SEGA's only fighter that is neither traditional 2D nor traditional 3D.
-
Shot in the dark, but...Golden Axe? Technically a brawler, but included 1v1, iirc.
-
Name SEGA's only fighter that is neither traditional 2D nor traditional 3D.
Sonic Battle?
-
For the purposes of my questions, Golden Axe: the Duel (i think that's the one you meant) falls under 2D, and Sonic Battle falls under 3D or 2.5D.
Another hint, it is neither 2D nor 3D, but it is also both... and more!
-
haha, another hint cus this just came to me:
It cannot be fully ported to any game system in existence, ever.
-

SEGA's Punching Bag Arcade series ?
-
Haha, sorry no. It's a legit fighting game.
-
Ooh ooh! It's Holosseum!!
-
WIN!
It was Holoseum!
https://youtu.be/eUWt6pu_uIs
While the game looks a bit underwhelming, in person the holographic effect was pretty impressive. I was lucky enough to have played it once at a mall arcade when I was young.
All yours Barry
-
New Holographic Sega Console anyone?
-
I played Holosseum earlier this year in Chicago, it was... interesting. But innovative!
Okay, question time:
---
I'm thinking of a Sonic game in which only three characters are playable. One is Sonic, the other two do not include a member of the Chaotix. What is it?
Bonus Question: This SEGA character goes by three names and has only been playable in two games. Who is it?
-

Bonus Question: This SEGA character goes by three names and has only been playable in two games. Who is it?
The game : Fighters Megamix for Saturn
The other two characters : Bean The Dynamite and Bark The Polar Bear .
-
Nope! Fighters Megamix is not a Sonic game.
-
Nope! Fighters Megamix is not a Sonic game.
Okay.. since I can't think any of it on console area anymore, I'm going to his arcade games which had three Sonic games with three characters !
The first is SegaSonic The Hedgehog (playable chars : Sonic, Ray, and Mighty).
Since Mighty is Chaotix member so I guess this is not the game.
The second is Sonic Blast Ball (playable chars : Sonic, Amy, and Shadow... Well, kind of)
But since it's a ticket redemption games, so I doubt that this is the game you think about.
The third is SegaSonic Bros (playable chars : Sonic, Red Sonic, and Yellow Sonic)
But since the game is just working prototype and never released officially so I guess this is not the game too.
But among those three, I think SegaSonic Bros is more likely
so my guess now is on that game. :)
-
Sonic Triple Trouble?
-
No to all of those, but you are close.
hint: it has a casino stage
-
I needed someone else to guess Triple Trouble (never played it, didn't want to cheat by looking it up).
Sonic 4: Ep2 ?
If I remember right (Sonic, Tails and Metal Sonic were playable, but I can't remember if there was a casino stage in that one.
-
Triple Trouble only has Sonic and Tails playable - the triple comes from the fact that there are three bad guys.
Sonic 4 Episode 2 is a good guess! In the 1 player mode, only Sonic (with Tails following you about) and Metal Sonic are playable. Tails is playable, but only in the 2 player mode. So... it could count, but it is not the game I had in mind. Though it is a better answer than what I am looking for.
---
So here are the questions with hints:
I'm thinking of a Sonic game in which only three characters are playable. One is Sonic, the other two do not include a member of the Chaotix. What is it?
Hint: It is on SEGA hardware.
Bonus Question: This SEGA character goes by three names and has only been playable in two games. Who is it?
Hint: This character is female, and while playable is not seen on the cover art of any of the games.
-
Ok I give up. There aren't a lot of females on Sega hardware. It can't be Amy, she is playable in way more than 2 games..
It can't be Sonic Drift..
-
No no, I was asking two different questions. SEGA character going by three names and appearing in two games is not related to the Sonic question. So Amy is not ruled out.
In fact, I will make it easier. One of the characters for question one is Amy.
-
Only game I can think of is Sonic Drift, but that's 4 characters..
-

I forgot to calculate PICO as console before, LOL.
I already asked question last week so let's make anyone who could answer your bonus question became the next questioner.
I'll try to answer it first.
Bonus Question: This SEGA character goes by three names and has only been playable in two games. Who is it?
Hint: This character is female, and while playable is not seen on the cover art of any of the games.
Is she Cenes = CTN = Crawford?
From Thunder Force V and Thunder Force VI ?
-
Alis = Alisa = Arisa
Phantasy Star IV and Segagaga
-
Isn't it just Alis and Alisa? I've never seen "Arisa" used. Also, is she playable in Segagaga? In any case, she is not who I am thinking of.
Another hint: The dominant color in her design is blue.
-
Isn't it just Alis and Alisa? I've never seen "Arisa" used.
I thought so, but I went to confirm and saw somewhere it was "Arisa" in Japan. But probably it was just some engrish..
Yea, she was in Segagaga :)
-
I'm going to guess Mew / Rhyth / Bis from the JSR series.
-
I'm going to guess Mew / Rhyth / Bis from the JSR series.
WINNER!!!
-
Sweet! I wasn't 100% sure since I've never played the GBA game. But in this topsy-turvy world, sometimes you've just gotta roll the dice.
Here's your clue for the next one...
This 16-bit adaptation of a Taito arcade game has more "serious" art direction than the cute-em-up original, and it is notoriously buggy.
-
Regarding my question: After posting it, I realized the GBA release could be considered a third game in the series but given it is such a faithful adaptation and it is basically Jet Set Radio I let it slide and didn't revise my question. Also, the HD release and regional releases I don't see as seperate titles, rather I see them as revisions or versions.
Regarding your question: that's a tough one! I refuse to use Google though!
-

16-bit ??? Hell yeah.
Since SEGA Megadrive is my favorite console of all time, I think I know what this game is.
It's Insector X, right?
-
You got it, Berto! Insector X is a really interesting shooter. Like I mentioned, the arcade original is what's called a cute-em-up, while the MD/Gen adaptation has more realistic graphics. At least, as realistic as a game about cyborg bugs can be. And by "buggy" of course I was alluding to the insect designs, not that there are programming bugs. ;) It's got really cool backgrounds and enemy designs. The only tip-off that it's an early 16-bit cartridge is that they didn't use any of the nice parallax backgrounds that became commonplace soon after.

LOL, I didn't get that "buggy" pun until you explained.
I kept trying to remember is there any (programming) bug on the game.
Actually I'd prefer the cute em up version so I kinda hate the change back then.
I prefer playing Fantasy Zone, Air Zonk, and Twinbee than any other realistic shmup like Darius, Gaiares, or Thunderforce.
But it's just my personal taste of course.
-------------------------------------------------
Ok.. My turn to ask question....
I'm thinking of a SEGA game that has a naked female character as final boss.
Her nipple is shown and it's not even censored in the western version.
Hint : It's an RPG, so you can count Mystic Defender out. :)
-
Good question... Personally I'm not very good at RPGs, so I doubt I'll be able to get it. But just based on my limited knowledge I will take a guess... Miracle Warriors.
-

WINNER !!!
Yes, it's Miracle Warriors.
In Japan it's called Haja no Fuuin
They change the boxart for western version since there is her in the japanese version ,
but they didn't change any arts in the game.
You can ask the next question, Centrale. :)
-
Right on! That box art was the basis of my guess. Holy smokes, 1987... that would still cause an uproar in the US even now.
Which Sega game's soundtrack includes the Hiroshi Miyauchi-composed songs "Adjustment Mind" and "Silent Language"?
-

Which Sega game's soundtrack includes the Hiroshi Miyauchi-composed songs "Adjustment Mind" and "Silent Language"?
Power Drift !!! or at least 3D Power Drift.
Not sure though about the arcade version since I only have the 3DS (JP) version (in SEGA 3D Fukkoku Archives 2).
Btw for anyone who concerned about SEGA 3D Collection's Puyo Puyo Tsu's language will still be in Japanese (not translated) in later US version, don't worry. This Puyo Puyo Tsu's turned out from arcade version, not Megadrive version, so there's no dialog/story to translate anyway.
-
You got it! Yeah, I think the song titles on the Power Drift soundtrack are really interesting. "Adjustment Mind" is pretty unusual... maybe it's meant to refer to the English phrase "attitude adjustment"? Another song is "Artistic Traps" which sounds like maybe Hiro was reflecting on not getting caught in a rut... who knows!

Oh, I forgot that it's my turn.
Ok, the next question is :
This video used a SEGA's game theme song. What's the title of the game?
Link of the youtube video. Only click this if you're an adult !!! : https://goo.gl/tgbU2b
Hint : It's a handheld game.

berto there are CHILDREN here

i was really joking. are there children here? i don't count anymore since i turned eighteen
well either way that song sounds super generic. i'd be surprised if anyone actually does know it.
-
lol, nice vid.
My guess would be either "Feel the Magic" or "Rub Rabbits"?
-
i was really joking. are there children here? i don't count anymore since i turned eighteen
What if there are, I can't live my life with a guilt. :))
Because there was a member who behaves like a kid, who knows if he's turned out really a kid after all..
lol, nice vid.
My guess would be either "Feel the Magic" or "Rub Rabbits"?
BINGO !!! You are right Randroid, it's from Feel The Magic, one of the first games that hit NDS on its launching days.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv9_9MrkXDo
Congrats, the next question is yours.
-
Awesome. Yeah, when you mentioned handheld, that gave it away for me. I had Feel the Magic and all the clues lined up. Great game BTW for anyone who still has a DS kicking around.
Alright, I'll make it an easy one, but you can't look it up.
Platinum + Sega + Handheld = ...
Go!

Uh.. That wasn't easy.
I only knew Platinum's console game (Bayonetta, Mad World, Wonderful 101, The Legend of Korra).
Is it a movie-based game?
-
No, it is not. Well probably not in the way you're thinking like TMNT or Transformers.
There was a movie for the game I'm thinking about, but I believe it came out after the game (like the Bayonetta anime).
-
Platinum + Sega + Handheld = Infinite Space!

That's it. Infinite Space. Has anyone seen the anime for it, knows if it's any good?
Anywho, Barry, yo, you got the juice now man.

Alright sir!
This SEGA character does not appear in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and SEGA Superstars Tennis, but does appear in SEGA Superstars and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing. Which character is this?
-
Alright sir!
This SEGA character does not appear in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and SEGA Superstars Tennis, but does appear in SEGA Superstars and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing. Which character is this?
Billy Hatcher ?
-
Are you counting cameos or just playable appearances?
-
Billy Hatcher ?
Ding ding ding! Yup! Billy Hatcher, the character, appeared in SEGA Superstars for the Eyetoy and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing. Billy Hatcher, the character and franchise, did not appear at all in SEGA Superstars Tennis. Oddly, Billy Hatcher appeared as a track in All-Stars Racing Transformed and the track featured cameos from several Billy Hatcher characters... but Billy himself was not present. Leading many to speculate that he was held off as potential DLC that never happened.
-
For the next question, I'm sorry you guys have to read first.
But trust me it's a good read, since this one is taken from one of the best book I've (or any SEGA's fan has) ever read,
Blake J. Harris' Console Wars.
Back in the 1992, Sega threw a big party for retailers in 1992 in Boca Raton, FL. On the stage, Al Nilsen (Director of Marketing at Sega of America) announced that Sega was dropping the price of the Genesis to $129.95 and then disclosed Sega’s war plan for 1992, which consisted of having the “hottest games,” the “hottest promotions,” and the “hottest advertising backed up by Sega’s largest advertising budget ever.”
“After all is said and done,” Nilsen said with folksy charm, “what is it that kids want? Great games. It’s that simple. And in 1992, we’ve got the must-have games that kids will be clamoring to buy in your stores.”
Tom Kalinske (Sega of America CEO) nodded to Nilsen, who was controlling the room magnificently. “Starting off our new titles for the second half of 1992 is David Robinson Basketball.” Nilsen paused to play a tape featuring some of the gameplay, then glided back into his speech. “We’re talking a full-on, full-court running game here. With two dozen incredible moves that were digitized from videotapes of real basketball action, David Robinson Basketball includes all the elbow-pumpin’, board-crashin’, ball-stealin’ excitement the floor can dish out.”
Nilsen had a fast-talking, strangely enticing style that somehow made it seem like he was making fun of specific games, of videogames in general, and even of himself, while simultaneously expressing reverence for all those things, including himself. It was hard to say how he did all this, but he did it well as he continued through the highlights of Sega’s upcoming roster.
There was Taz-Mania, which featured “seventeen levels of postcard-quality Tasmanian scenery, including whirling waterspouts and perilous quicksand.” And there was also Evander Holyfield’s Real Deal Boxing, a game centered around the fighter who had once knocked out Buster Douglas. “It’s 360 degrees of nonstop action in the ring!” Nilsen boasted, before moving on to Super Monaco GP 2 (“The ultimate fantasy for anyone who’s ever been thrilled by the smell of burning rubber”), Batman Returns (“Holy bat smoke! It’s Batmobile versus Duckmobile as Batman hurls into acrobatic action against the death-dealing Penguin”), and TaleSpin (“You’ll circumnavigate the globe while Don Karnage and his air pirates try to thwart your progress”).
Nilsen was on a roll, and the crowd loved it, Kalinske most of all. Nilsen was throwing strikes left and right, showing off the full arsenal. Fastball. Curveball. Slider. Even a knuckleball from time to time. “In October we’ll be rereleasing some of our previous best-sellers, like Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker, under the banner of Sega Classics, and they’ll be available to customers at only $29.95.”
Kalinske could feel the momentum building. Perfection might be an abstract concept, but it had a specific feeling, and Kalinske was sure that everyone in the room must have felt it.
Then Nilsen introduced the next game—and something went horribly wrong. “In November,” he announced, “comes a game with the most unusual goal. For the first time ever, you want to die,” Nilsen said. Seconds later, the power went out. The air-conditioning cut out, the projection screen went black, and though slivers of sunlight trickled through the window shades, the hundreds of retailers who would decide Sega’s fate suddenly found themselves in the dark.
And the question is :
What is the title of the game Nilsen mentioned as "A game with the most unusual goal. For the first time ever, you want to die." ?
-
Hmm, I'm going to guess Chakan.
-
Hmm, I'm going to guess Chakan.
Bingo !!!
Based upon a comic book by Robert A. Kraus and was produced by Ed Annunziata, the game is well known for its unusually high difficulty level.
The game was like Dark Souls of SEGA Genesis.
That game is Chakan: the Forever Man.
Chakan was the greatest warrior. Neither man nor beast could best him in mortal combat.
Then, in his arrogance, he said one day even death himself will bow before his swords.
And then the death itself challenge him, and promised an eternal life if he could beat him.
The battle raged on for several days, spells and swords clashed, the world trembled at their unleashed powers until surprisingly to both of them.... Chakan wins.
But death was cunning, and his reward was not what it seemed.
"Foolish man," Death said, "I grant you the kiss of eternal life, but," Death smiled,
"For your arrogance and pride i will temper my gift with this curse."
"Each nightfall, evils will be shown to you, and the pain of their victims will be your pain. You will never know rest as you wander this world searching to slay the horrors that haunt your sleeping world. You will suffer grievous wounds, but you will not die, and as eternity rolls on, you crave my touch. You face will bear my visage, and your eyes will burn with hellfire."
Yes, Chakan has been granted immortality but at a price. So it's not a prize, it's a curse.
Congrats. The next question is yours, Centrale.
-
That's great... I wasn't entirely sure because in my mind I had the impression that Chakan came out later than that, but I knew that was the theme of the game.
Speaking of when games came out... here's the question:
What year was the very last Game Gear game released?
-

If I remember correctly, JP: The Lost World is Game Gear's swan song from SEGA.
(I love the genesis version of the game so much back then).
The movie is released in 1997, so I'd have to guess 1997.
-
That's a great guess. That is actually the next-to-last Game Gear release. The final release is really a curiosity, as it came out significantly later than that!... though apparently it was developed years earlier.
-

It's Garry Kitchen's Super Battletank: War in the Gulf isn't it?
For some bizarre reason it came out 7 years later after the original MegaDrive release in 1994
-
You got it, crackdude! Super Battletank was released by Majesco in 2001... seven years after being developed and four years after the next-to-last Game Gear release, Jurassic Park: The Lost World. Very unusual. I wonder how many retailers stocked Super Battletank? Did anyone actually have a gaming display in 2001 that included one Game Gear cartridge? I'm curious about Majesco's partnership with Sega, as they also released the tiny Genesis 3 console.
Anyway... the next question is yours to ask, crackdude!
-
Thank you!
My question is:
Who is this?

Is the game Segagaga?
As far as I know: no.
She made a cameo as a weapon of all things, in Phastasy Star Portable 2 Infinity.

Finally found her name by accident when I was reading some old articles on Dreamcast Junkyard, lol.
She's Casko.

Amazing! Yes it is!
Your turn Berto!

Wow, very interesting! I had never seen that character... and apparently it's a capsule toy in Shenmue, according to that article. I'll have to keep an eye out for that as I play through it again.
-
Amazing! Yes it is!
Your turn Berto!
Okay, here's my question :
This Sega Genesis game has a Sega Saturn floating around shown while you as a player driving to Saturn.
What game it is?
-
Whoa... good question. I have no idea. I know it would have to be a game late in the Genesis's lifespan...
-
Whoa... good question. I have no idea. I know it would have to be a game late in the Genesis's lifespan...
Yes you are correct, since Sega Saturn is released in the Genesis's late lifespan.
That's a first hint.
Second Hint : This Genesis game is published by SEGA of America and only released on United States.
There is no Japanese or European version of the game.
-
Okay, I finally figured this one out via a bit of research! I looked up Sega Genesis games by year of release and tried to figure out which one would be likely to include "driving to Saturn." Finally I spotted a very likely candidate, and confirmed it via playing on an emulator. It's "The Magic School Bus: Space Exploration Game." I wasn't even aware this game existed, but it's funny because lately my 4-year-old daughter has really been into the Magic School Bus.
Berto, is this a game you played as a kid? Or did you discover the Saturn easter egg some other way?
-

Bingo !!! Yup it's "The Magic School Bus: Space Exploration Game."
Actually I never played it when I was a kid.
I discover it recently when I bought some used SEGA Club games for my 5-year-old son.
Those SEGA Club Games I bought were Bonkers, Ecco Jr, The Berenstain Bears, Wacky Worlds, Sesame Street Counting Cafe, Math Blaster, The Magic School Bus: Space Exploration Game, and my son's favorite still until now : Richard Scarry's Busytown.
I tested all the games before giving it to my son, played them to make sure all the games was really kid-friendly, and that's how I found it.
Congrats Centrale, the next question is yours.

This co-op shooter (shmup to you young'ns) features a mixture of hand-drawn and CG-rendered artwork - a rarity for the early 90s. File this one under "cautionary tale of the perils of genetic engineering"... except, of course, the four ships you have to choose from are also products of genetic engineering. What is the name of this game?!

Bio Hazard Battle?
-
You got it! Bio-Hazard Battle has really nice graphics and is reminiscent of R-Type, but is not as famous. It has CG sprites like Donkey Kong Country, and was released two years earlier, but didn't make the kind of waves that DKC did. It's a cool, creepy game - perfect for the Halloween season. Give Bio-Hazard Battle some love!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNseDYHJ2qY

Next question!

All right !!!
Play Bio Hazard Battle a lot back than, but never managed to finish it. That game is so hard, but may be because I was never good at shmup.
My question : What's the name of the game this screenshot is taken from?

I have no idea... the only wild guess that comes to mind is Resident Evil: Code Veronica... which I actually played, but don't remember much about for some reason.
-
I want to say either a Resident Evil game or a House of the Dead game...
-
I have no idea... the only wild guess that comes to mind is Resident Evil: Code Veronica... which I actually played, but don't remember much about for some reason.
Nope. It's not RE: Code Veronica. This game is published by SEGA, not by Capcom.
I want to say either a Resident Evil game or a House of the Dead game...
Nope. the game is not from House of The Dead franchise.
I'll give you one more hint.
The first hint, already stated before, This game is published by SEGA.
The next hint is.. This game is NOT released on SEGA's console (Dreamcast/Saturn)
-
Condemned?
-
Hmm... looks kind of futuristic... I'm going to guess... Headhunter: Redemption?
-
Condemned?
Hmm... looks kind of futuristic... I'm going to guess... Headhunter: Redemption?
Nope and nope. This game never came to Microsoft's console.
That's the third hint.
-
Total shot in the dark here, but...I'm gonna say Enemy Zero? I know it was on Saturn, but it also had a PC release, so I'm not sure if you're counting exclusive or just was on their hardware.
-
The Conduit
-
Total shot in the dark here, but...I'm gonna say Enemy Zero? I know it was on Saturn, but it also had a PC release, so I'm not sure if you're counting exclusive or just was on their hardware.
Nope. This game never came to PC.
The Conduit
Nope. This game never came to Nintendo's console or Android/iOS.
So.. Based on what's stated before, we got a fourth hint :
This game was released on Sony's console.
-
Okay. I'll give a lot of clues this time so it'll be a lot easier now.
This game is the final of the trilogy.
Actually I won't call it a trilogy since each of the three games were developed by different developer, but I understand if some would call it a trilogy since there are only three games of the franchise :
The first game of the franchise is an arcade game that has been ported to various console.
The second game of the franchise is a Nintendo's handheld game.
The third game of the franchise (the screenshot was taken from) is a Sony's console game.

I have absolutely no idea lol
-
It's Project Altered Beast (2005)!!!
And here is the scene:
https://youtu.be/veaAVn2NHAk?t=4m45s
-
Wow... somehow I've never even heard of this. Is it good?
-
Apparently it is pretty bad. I'd love to have a firsthand opinion but it never released in America, just Japan and Europe. So I guess that says a lot about the quality.
-
It's Project Altered Beast (2005)!!!
YES !!!
The first game of the franchise is the original Altered Beast, that has been ported to various console.
The second game of the franchise is Altered Beast: Guardian of the Realms (2002) for Game Boy Advance .
The third game of the franchise (the screenshot was taken from) is Project Altered Beast (2005), that was only released in Japan and Europe.
Congrats Barry, the next question is yours. :-D
-
I'll go easy. Sonic the Hedgehog has had a game on every major western SEGA home console and portable. One other franchise almost attained this goal, but failed to appear on two pieces of hardware. What is this franchise and what are the two pieces of hardware?
-
Oooh, this is a hard one. My first instinct was Shinobi and Phantasy Star, but I was wrong there.
Is it Bonanza Bros.? It appeared on the Master System and Genesis, I believe it had a port to the Dreamcast, and it did not appear on the Game Gear or Saturn.
-
No it's not that, and don't forget ALL western released pieces of hardware.
-
What do you count as "hardware" in this case? Like, could you give a list of what you mean?
-
Anything SEGA sold to consumers in western territories (US/UK specifically) that require a cartridge or disc. ;)
Hint: I'm avoiding worldwide because then we get into murky territory with the real old consoles like SG-1000. These games released in Japan.
-

Alex Kidd?
Failed to appear on SEGA Saturn & SEGA Pico.
-
Close, but Alex Kidd did not have a Dreamcast game. I'm not counting cameos like SEGAGAGA. Also, now that I think of it, he was not on the Game Gear was he? So that's four.
-

Failed to appear on SEGA Saturn & Arcade.

Ecco is correct! Though I said home console and handheld, which excludes arcades. Ecco failed to appear on the Saturn and the 32X. Kolibri did give the 32X an Ecco-like game, but of course that is not an Ecco game. Ecco appeared on the Master System, Genesis/MD, Game Gear, Pico and Dreamcast.
-

My favorite Ecco game is Ecco Jr, since it wasn't as hard as others. Lol
Ok, my turn of question :
This SEGA published game was poorly reviewed by many gamesite and VGChartz estimating this game to flop, citing a low number units in sales.
But surpsrisingly this game sold well, more than twice that VGChartz's citing. It's even managed to be in Top 10 game for PS2 and PSP for some weeks.
Its PSP version even got re-release as "Greatest Hits" series due to its good sales.
(A game can earn this 'greatest hits" title if it meets certain sales criteria within two years after its release).
What's the title of the game?
-
ez. Ironman
-
ez. Ironman
That was fast!!!
Yep, it's Iron Man. The next question is yours, crackdude.
-
This SEGA game has various gameplay and many tribute for previous musical SEGA games
(Samba de Amigo, Space Channel 5, Feel The Magic XY/XX).
Released for 3DS and iOS.
But too bad due to the failure of the iOS version, the sequel for the 3DS version got cancelled too.
What's the title of the game?
-
Rhythm Thief!
EDIT: "Rhythm Thief & The Emperor's Treasure" if ya' needed the full title.
-

Showtime !!! Yep, it's Rhythm Thief.
The next question is yours, OriginalName.

Nintendogs became a big hit in 2005 by appealing to casual and young gamers with cute puppies that the player could care for and interact with on the go. What Japan-exclusive Sega game introduced the same exact concept nearly a decade earlier?

Inu no Osanpo ?
-
@Berto
Sorry it took me so long to respond!! A lot of personal things came up -- didn't mean to derail the thread.
That's a great guess and you taught me about a game I wasn't aware of, but the title I'm looking for is five years older and, like Nintendogs, for a portable system.

Five years older, around Dreamcast era then. Chao's Garden ??? ?

Inu no Osanpo was released in 2001; the mystery game was released five years earlier in 1996.
-
Inu no Osanpo was released in 2001; the mystery game was released five years earlier in 1996.
Ah.. I forgot Ino no Osanpo's year release, thinking it was around 2005.
Then.... Tama and Friends?
-
Oh man, I'm starting to feel bad about my pick. "Tama & Friends" is another great guess, but that game is more of a minigame collection based on the "Tama & Friends" anime, which happened to star a cat. The game I'm looking for is a dedicated pet simulator (similar to "Nintendogs") that was also released for the Game Gear. It was part of a very short-lived series (only two games). Originally there was a cat version in July 1996, then in December of 1996 a dog version was released. What was the title of the dog version?
-
Pet Club: Inu Dai Suki!
Damn.. I felt bad for never heard of this game before, lol.

Good job! You never gave up on it. The next turn goes to Berto, and it's well-deserved!
