Title: ROME 2 is out... Thoughts?
Post by: Pao on September 07, 2013, 10:43:17 am
After playing a lot of the campaign, I can say I'm pretty damn disappointed...
Not because of the bugs/AI/unoptimization that reviewers are talking about, but because of many weird design choices they included, and features they removed.

"Victory Points": In an attempt to remove camping, they now force you to defend a flag... Which means, as a defender, you cannot position your troops anywhere else.  Not on a hill, not near a forest, BUT ON A FLAG! Or else it will be captured and you will lose.

- Turns take AGES: Really really long time. You could make tea while you wait.. I know there are a lot of factions this time, but they should've come up with a solution to cut the waiting time. Boring...Very.

- No Family Trees: A franchise staple, Gone. Now you recruit Generals whenever you want like trivial units.

-Province System didn't deliver:  They told me it will lead to more land battles, it didn't. It just lead to more siege battles without walls.

-Music is mediocre: Which is understandable since there is no Jeff Van Dyck, but its really stale.

...Other nagging issues I won't mention.

Man, what a bummer... This had the potential to be the best in the series, but they screwed up, feels very bloated and soulless.

Still no where near a bad game though, its just disappointing for me.  I prefer Rome 1/Shogun 2/FoTS by far.

Well, they are saying a patch a week to get rid of bugs. Said gameplay changes are coming too but I doubt we'd see anything drastic as far as that goes.

I have not played it yet, but I am really disappointed with everything I am hearing. It seems like they went out of their way to avoid most of what the fans wanted, and as a sequel to the legendary Rome 1 this is just pathetic.

Capture the flag mechanics were likely added because all of the bad/poorly implemented AI. Me and a buddy assume this will be altered as an 'extra mode' later on. The fact you can win almost any battle without a single casualty should have sent off alarm bells in their heads though, it is just too stupid. Even worse is how some fans blame this awful design and the much easier difficulties as 'console game mentality'.  >:(

Until the game is properly out of beta, post some fun screenshots of how glitchy and awful the game is at the moment!

By the way, were changing seasons really removed? That sounds too idiotic to even believe.

Fake edit: They seem upset with how they game turned out, so maybe by mid-October the game will be borderline playable. http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/89314-Second-statement-from-CA-on-Rome-II-s-release-%2811-Sep-2013%29?s=6d542b98245440937f2c11f2269a8360

My problem with the game aren't the bugs or AI, they seem similar to Shogun 2 at launch from my expereince, its also nothing a patch can't fix.

The problem is the new gameplay features they added and removed, it just made the game unenjoyable for me.

I forgot to mention that troops, at any seige, can just burn down the gates without siege equipment... Yep.

Did the recent patch fix much? I heard people saying it only decreased lag a bit, but it is 3 gigs, so that is hard to believe...

I forgot to mention that troops, at any seige, can just burn down the gates with now siege equipment... Yep.

I only have one reaction for that.
