Title: PSPgo or DSi xl/ll?
Post by: Monkeroony on February 10, 2010, 12:43:58 pm
I've saved up a bunch of money to buy a big tv for my birthday but am deciding to wait until 3d tvs are on the Market and reasonably priced instead.

I was going to get an ipad but the more I read about it the more I hate it.

I should probably note that I did have a ds briefly but only played zelda and mario on it.

Which handheld would be better for me, I prefer quick action games or retro styled games.
Which has better sega support?

Is it likely they will both be replaced with the ds2 and psp2 this year?

Don't get DSi XL it's for old people  :afroman:

get either a PSP 3000 or a normal DSi

With the DSi/XL there are a ton of 2d action games (Contra 4, Metal Slug 7, Mega Man ZX, etc...), plus Retro Game Challenge, and Space Invaders Extreme for the retro side of things.  SEGA's got the Sonic Rush series, Sonic Chronicles, The Rub Rabbit's series, Sands of Destruction, and Phantasy Star 0 as games that jump to mind immediately.

I just picked up the PSPGo last year. Mainly on the strenght of Valkyria Chronicles 2 alone.  Crush and Sonic Rivals/Sonic Rivals 2 are solid SEGA games for the platform.  I tend to use it a lot as a multimedia device, but for other good games that might interest you, there's:
Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero? - Very solid 2D action platformer, with tons of humour.
2.5D remakes of titles like Mega Man X, Mega Man, and Castlevania: Rondo Of Blood (which includes the original versions of Rondo+Symphony of the Night)
MGS: Peace Walker comes out this year too.

I really wouldn't recommend a PSP go until a price drop.
Rumor is Sony is going to be relaunching it soon, and probably with a new price.
Also a rumor of PSP 4000 coming down the pipeline.

The PSPGo is pretty expensive at the moment. Really solid device though.

Thanks guys you've both been really helpful, I still can't make a decision one way or another.

hmm, I know I can link up my ps3 with the psp go and play some games like resistance with a ps3 pad.

I know the dsi is massive but it's also brown, which means it is pretty groovy.

No problem.

If you do have a PS3, then the connectivity is another plus. Remote play is a pretty sweet feature. I've sat around on my breaks at school watching tv shows streamed from the PS3 hard drive.

The DS has been lacking in new releases. If you owned one sometime in its lifetime I advise against getting it. I really don't think it's worth it. The PSP isn't worth the money and the PSPgo is just a joke.

Save your money or get a DS.

Yup, you can play any PS1 games you bought off PSN on your PSP too.

I'm pretty sure that's the only way I'll ever get around to beating Final Fantasy VIII.

You're hands down my biggest competition for trophy count as far as people on my friends list. Good job sir.

I got pretty into that game. I think I've clocked around 50 hours in it.
For a racing game (hell, any game), that's pretty rare for me.

DS XL  is awesome. The most awesome way to play Mario Kart.

PSPgo is stupid. I hate DL only. Imagine yourself in 5/6 years wanting to get a game and simply can't cause the service isn't there anymore.

The PSP3000 on the other hand is magical.

I personally wouldn't buy a new PSP, I have a feeling that Sony will be showing off a PSP2 very soon, especially since low sales, PSP-Go bomb and the fact that PSP-3000 is doing "shit" outside of Japan.  :|

Hmm this is really tricky.

George pretty much confirmed my fear, I'll have to wait because the pspgo seems more like my cup of tea.
Title: Re: PSPgo or DSi xl/ll?

On the other hand, the PSP now has an excellent library of games, and they all sell for cheap. The 3000 hardware is incredible. Well, to be honest the battery kinda sucks when you take full use of the system's capabilities..
But if you can get one of the older ones that came with PSP1000 and get a "humped" battery cover it's good, I did it.

If a PSP2 comes out in the near future it will cost lots of money, will probably not play the current games, so it will have a shit library to begin with, the new games will be expensive, etc..

I think a PSP3000 is a great deal. My 3 cents..
Title: Re: PSPgo or DSi xl/ll?
Post by: Happy Cat on February 10, 2010, 06:48:40 pm
Yeah, PSP 3000 is a great deal. You can get all the games the PSP go gets once you buy a nice big Memory Stick Duo. Plus Valkyria Chronicles 2 comes out this summer, if you are a fan of VC or wanted to try it.

Get a GPX2 thingy, it emulates Mega Drive, SNES and a bunch of other stuff, so you can just play ROMS of your favourite games! (Providing you own them already of course, I wouldn't want you PIRATIN' GAEMS) Not sure if it has MAME emulation, but if it does, I'm questioning why I don't have one already...

EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GP2X (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GP2X)

OMG OMG OMG it has MAME support. I got to get one of these things!

I do not think either are worth it honestly.

I have a feeling Sony is going to start letting you play some PSP games on the PlayStation 3 sometime in the future, at least eventually. Not just that, but I feel the PSP lineup is extremely poor, and what games are actually good/great/amazing are extremely short and have little replay incentive.

The Nintendo DSi does not have many good features outside of what the DS can do already, but I will be getting one mainly for Shantae 2: Risky's Revenge (it is coming to DSiWare for some batshit stupid reason). I will probably get the XL because it has a better battery life, and I probably will prefer a bigger screen.

In my opinion, if you have to think about this, then you should probably not buy either. There are tons and tons of other great games out and coming out on the platforms you already own that are fantastic, but I guess it all comes down to your income and just how much you want to play games on the go.

Especially if you like old-school actiony games, what could be better than an arcade emulator!

I think I'll probably get the pspgo, it looks sleeker and has a bunch of games I'm interested in.
Plus I had a ds and have played the best of what the system has to offer.

However, is the gp2x really hard to get emulations on, how would I put neo geo and megadrive games on it?

Well I looked into it, since i think I might actually buy a GP2X Wiz.

Here is a website with all the emulators and things
http://dl.openhandhelds.org/cgi-bin/wiz.cgi (http://dl.openhandhelds.org/cgi-bin/wiz.cgi)

It has computer/Console/Arcade emulators, and even a DOSbox Emulator so you can probbaly even play Monkey Island games etc on it.

Actually, quick google search reveals, that the old point and click games do work
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW8w9x-Y ... re=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW8w9x-YQxE&feature=related)

From what I've read, to get the emulators/games working you just copy the files onto an SD card and then select them on the handheld and away you go. I'm guessing it wouldn't be much different to getting them working on a PC.

Well, yeah, the Wiz is pretty great. Just don't expect new releases. You play emulators and homebrew and that's it.

On the other hand, you won't spend any more money on games..

It apparantly plays video and music etc too, so I could use it for that as well.

It reads ebooks too!
HD video out. DivX encoding.
Photo viewer.
And it has many homebrew software.

A while ago I was thinking on buying the F300.. But it seemed to me rather dull to not be able to play new things. There is little to no official game development.. That pulled me off. But if emulating is what you most enjoy, there's no denying that the Wiz is the best console around!

Well I already have a DS for new stuff, but I often find myself wanting to play something on the train like an old fighter game or something like Simpsons Arcade. Not just that, but whne i have my DS, I have only one game available at once, but with the Wiz I could have potentially hundreds on hand, so I could play some Monkey Island, and then jump into King of Fighters 96 or something.

I used to have a flashcart for my DS. I carried around lots of games, but ultimately I traded it for a Sega Saturn (great deal or greatest deal?).
Now the only game I have on my DS is Super Monkey Ball lol

I think that the Wiz is your cup of tea. I'm sure you won't feel disappointed.

When i sold my DS lite on ebay years ago I threw in Monkey ball for free, the controls are terrible for that game!

I just got my Wiz in the mail yesterday, awesome system!

I've played a bunch of Mega drive games on it, Metal Slug (Which works so perfectly on it), Master of Darkness (master System game) and even Simpsons Arcade!

The BEST thing about it though, it plays old Lucasarts adventure games! Sam and Max hit the Road and LeChuck's revenge work flawlessly on the system with the Touchscreen controls! I think I'll try out Full Throttle next.

I had some issues getting a vide ot play, but I might just need a codec update or something.

Oh, and does anyone know how to install firmware updates?

Also, for the F300 model you could download the firmware updates from their site. Not sure about the Wiz though..

almost certainly will buy the psp go,

what are the sonic rival games, they're 2d head to head racers right?

I'm guessing the crazy taxi game sucks?

What must haves are there, I looked through the psn and there were about 19 games I would really like, and there are still a bunch that aren't yet available.

PSX looks freaking AMAZING on the Wiz. Did not know about that. Otherwise I wouldn't have got another PSP last summer..

Sonic Rivals is really boring.
SR2 is really frustrating.

Crazy Taxi seems pretty cool. Just make sure to listen to the original soundtrack while playing! Otherwise the magic isn't all there..

Must haves imo:
FF7 Crisis Core
Lumines
Wipeout (either one is good)
LocoRoco (short but addictive)
Burnout
SEGA MEGA DRIVE COLLECTION
Outrun 2006
Ridge Racer

Title: Re: PSPgo or DSi xl/ll?

Games that are out now on the PSN that I'd really reccomend:

1. Patapon 2
2. LocoRoco 2
3. Crush
4. Mega Man Maverick Hunter X
5. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
6. Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles
7. Half-Minute Hero
8. Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero?
9. Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
10. Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do To Deserve This?
11. LittleBigPlanet

Games that aren't up on the PSN yet:

1. Lumines II
2. Every Extend Extra
3. Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
4. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

Upcoming games:

1. Valkyria Chronicles 2
2. Echoshift
3. Patchwork Heroes
4. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Other good bets:

I found the Sonic Rivals games to be pretty fun. Picture a 2.5 platformer where you're trying to get through it faster than another character.
Dissidia: Final Fantasy is a different take on the 3d fighter with leveling up elements, and tons of Final Fantasy fanservice.  It's kind of like the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi series as far as the free roaming 3d fighting goes.
Tetris off of the Minis section is a safe bet.

Why would you buy a PSPGo for more money than a regular PSP when it doesn't play discs, doesn't have all games available on the network, doesn't use the old memory sticks, doesn't use the old peripherals for the TV output, and the old PSP can download games from the network exactly as the PSPGo can?

I totally agree, don't buy a PSPGo even if you are new to the market. Just get the cheaper PSP's and spend the extras on classics.

I get what you are all saying, I'd rather pay a bit more for a console that doesn't look like a 15 year old designed it, plus I prefer the smaller form factor and better screen.

It's really not that much more money all things considered, although I would love a price drop.

I enjoy a bigger screen, the look of the PSP 3000 does not bother me much. Plus I play games on mine, so I would like to get ALL games. If PSN had all the games, I would not mind.

Well, DS XL coming out next month, going to cost 190 bucks.  :| . I'm expecting a PSP go bundle/price drop soon.

If you get it now, you get a download code for LittleBigPlanet emailed to you for connecting to the PSN with it.

LBP on the PSP is incredible. Too bad the analog stick is such a pain, cause the game itself is great.
