Title: SEGA has purchased Relic
Post by: Aki-at on January 23, 2013, 06:15:27 am
http://www.gamersglobal.de/news/63674/thq-verkauf-sega-kauft-relic-koch-evolve-crytek-homefront

Seems to be edging more and more towards a certainty rather than a rumour, Ubisoft, Crytek and Koch Media seem to be the other winning bids too.

Company of Heroes 2 is slated to be coming out sometime early 2013 and I imagine we will get the Warhammer 40k license from Games Workshop. I am more hopeful though that SEGA will now not fall into the pitfall of focusing on simply the mobile market which was one of my biggest worries with the restructuring but with expanding CA and now the purchase of Relic, it shows they're willing to spend money on quality productions.

So what says you SEGAbits folk?

Good move this is a great studio , but I wish SEGA would really make a move for Volition- that's a great developer with some great In-House Tech and SEGA should do all it can to snap up Metro: Last Light too

at this rate Sega will become a leading force in the RTS market.  Not what I wanted or expected but hey, a quality developer is a quality developer.

To All THQ Employees:

We now have the answers we've been seeking through our financial restructuring and
Chapter 11 case. While much will be written, here are the facts of the bids and auction
that occurred:

Yesterday morning, we received a competing bid for the operating business,
along with Clearlake's offer, and numerous offers for separate assets.
During an auction process that lasted over 22 hours, the final conclusion was
that the separate-asset bids would net more than a single buyer for the majority
of the company.

Shortly, we will, present the results to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, which must
concur with our assessment.

The proposed sales of multiple assets is as follows :

    Sega agreed to purchase Relic
Koch Media agreed to purchase Volition and Metro
    Crytek agreed to purchase Homefront
Take 2 agreed purchase Evolve and
Ubisoft agreed to purchase Montreal and South Park
We expect these sales to close this week.

Some assets, including our publishing businesses and Vigil, along with some other
intellectual properties are not included in the sale agreements. They will remain part of
the Chapter 11 case. We will make every effort to find appropriate buyers, if possible.

What this means for employees

We expect that most employees of the entities included in the sale will be offered
employment by the new owners. However, we cannot say what these owners may
intend, and there will likely be some positions that will not be needed under the
new ownership. You should receive notice this week or early next week if the new
owners intend to extend employment to you. Please note that the terms of your new
employment, including pay and benefits, may be different from the current terms of
your employment with THQ.

If you are an employee of an entity that is not included in the sale, we regret that
your position will end. A small number of our headquarters staff will continue to be
employed by THQ beyond January 25 to assist with the transition. THQ has sufficient
resources to pay these employees for work going forward, and we will be contacting
these employees immediately to ensure their continued employment during this
transition period. We are requesting the ability to offer certain severance pay to
minimize disruption for employees of non-included entities as they determine the next
steps in their careers.

We know you will have many questions about this news. We'll be meeting tomorrow
when we return to talk through this announcement and to answer any questions you
have. You will receive a benefits fact sheet and FAQs with answers to some questions
that may be on your mind. Please review these materials closely.

A personal note

The work that you all have done as part of the THQ family is imaginative, creative,
artistic and highly valued by our loyal gamers. We are proud of what we have
accomplished despite today's outcome.

It has been our privilege to work alongside the entire THQ team. While the company
will cease to exist, we are heartened that the majority of our studios and games will
continue under new ownership. We were hoping that the entire company would remain
intact, but we expect to hear good news from each of the separate entities that will be
operating as part of new organizations.

For those THQ employees who are part of entities that are not included in the sale, we
are confident that the talent you have displayed as part of THQ will be recognized as you
take the next steps in your career.

Thank you all for your dedication and for sharing your talent with the THQ team. We
wish you the best of luck and hope you will keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Brian Farrell

I don't think SEGA was ever in danger of focusing on the mobile market. If anything, this seems to be an expansion of SEGA's increased focus on digital games. They are increasingly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the PC market.

Sucks what happened to Vigil... Wonder what will happen with Darksiders if someone buys it?

It's great for fans of fans probably, but this is not the SEGA that I support. I care little for RTS games, I care more for the SEGA that made those Arcade classics. I don't like this direction...

Ah well collecting SEGA arcade stuff is expensive enough as it is, so maybe the drought off quality an the focus of the entire videogame market on crappy pseudo-hollywood FPS and RPG in the last years is good for my wallet.

I think this acquisition fits in nicely beside Creative Assembly and is great overall for Sega West.

Does this mean that Sega now has licensing rights to WarHammer 40k?

That's really interesting, I was really looking forward to COH2 as well. Sega seems to have a decent PC presence now, which is really great.

Just want to say that I love this news... I love RTS games and I played a ton of Company of Heroes with my friends. With Total War and War Hammer from CA and Company of Heroes and WarHammer 40k from relic Sega is pretty much the biggest RTS powerhouse out there.

The only down side to this is that Sega did not get the rights to Home World with buying Relic. Home World is their other space RTS and it's got a big cult following. The HomeWorld IP will go up for auction soon. I hope Sega bids.

I am happy for the RTS market, as SEGA is certainly building up muscle. I also think having Relic onboard will allow Creative Assembly to do other projects. I really wanna see their upcoming Aliens game.

Shame they didn't get Volition, 'cause Saints Row is a franchise that would be just perfect for SEGA to have it's catalogue.

It probably means that any future Company Of Heroes games will start getting updated and released on a more regular basis than it has before which may please or irritate some fans.
Myself though i was still hoping that Sega would publish Devil's Third game.

Here's a quote from Games Workshop in an article from Polygon..

Quote
Many will carry over to new relationships; for example, Games Workshop will "work in good faith" with Sega — the new owner of Relic, the studio that created titles based on its intellectual property — in order to satisfy its objections to the sale.

That's official, Sega has the WARHAMMER 40K license meaning WARHAMMER  is all complete! and most likely COMPANY OF HEROES IP too. Not bad.

Eh? SEGA paid the most for one of THQ's Developers?

I thought they had no money to spend?

Maybe Sega should do some celebrational promotional stuff with their recent aquisition.
Maybe having a pic of an old WW2 US bomber with Amy Rose on the side of it or having a US marine with Sonic on his helmet. Or try to get an Ultramarine from Warhammer and a soldier that represents COH as DLC for Superstars Racing. Why not?

Anyway the Sega wiki info is long overdue for an update to incoperate the news about Relic and COH being a Sega franchise now, i mean some of the titles mentioned in the post DC/third party era have long been cancelled but the info on it doesn't reflect that.

Let's start some fanwank theories about the games they can make now.

Aliens RTS with Company of Heroes gameplay? Two factions, Aliens and Marines. Then an expansion with Predator Faction!

LOL Nice...looks like they are happy with the acquisition, and many gamers are happy that Relic are under SEGA due to their good will with PC Devs.

To further add on Pao's point. SEGA Sammy has over $2 billion cash in hand compared with debt of $720 mil, they have more cash in hand than EA, TakeTwo, Ubisoft or Square Enix.

Their restructuring was not due to lack of money, it was done to make the consumer division profitable again.

Am I the only one who doesn't think this developer fits with Sega's image?

I think I've changed and Sega has changed too much for us to get along anymore.

Sega has always changed. 20 years ago this sort of thing also happened, only difference was that most of us knew noting about it.

I don't see any change personally. 1 side there's the iconic stuff, and the other side there's the more business(and lately, thankfully with alot more quality) side. I think SEGA is making a good decision.

Anyway awesome artwork there randroid. It's nice to see even though everything, people still have a soft spot for SEGA's legacy

I'd love to see Relic or CA take a SEGA franchise and make a RTS game out of it. Phantasy Star would be pretty awesome, or a Shining Force RTS game in the classic style.

But COH is far better than half the stuff Sega puts out. and is it really that gritty? Its a ww2 game.

Its a ww2 game.

Thank god someone is finally going to fill this void! For years now I've been wondering why no one has ever made a World War 2 game. This could be huge guys.

I know you're being sarcastic, but Company of Heroes is a very well respected WWII real time strategy game. Sure the FPS market is full of WWII games, but Company of Heroes is one of the only WWII RTS franchises existing right now, which makes it a very strong IP.

The only other I see is Close Combat, whose last title was in '07 and next one is TBA. The only other one, which has had more releases than Close Combat since '07, is Company of Heroes (releases in '07, '09, and '13).

Take a look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_video_games

So bundle that with Total War and the recently acquired WarHammer and SEGA West has a very strong RTS stable of games.

So you judge games entirely by their setting?

Listen, how many games can you even name recently that have been WW2 related? I'm being quite honest, go ahead, I don't think there have been many. Even if there has been, I haven't been burnt out on them like you seem to be, because the last one I played apart from COH1 which I discovered a few months ago was COD: World at War, way back in 2009. So forgive me for not being crochety and angry about having played two WW2 games over the course of three years...

You also conveniently ignored everything about the game apart from it's setting, COH is an exceedingly good RTS game.

I've noticed a trend in your posts that seem to be very counter-culture, but are you willing to concede that a game like COH might be good?

Yeah I was just being a joker. If people like it then that's great. More power to them and I hope they have a lot of fun with it.

Not everyone has to share my opinion. Carry on RTS dudes.

Before I posted this Mademan replied so I'm just going to add some things.

I'm not trying to be anything, counterculture, or anything else. I'm just saying what I think which, I know, is really meaningless to everyone but me, but that's what forums are for.

I was honestly just being snarky but like I said previously, if it's good and others love it that's awesome! I wouldn't want anyone saying I'm stupid for liking Persona or motorcycles, or hockey or whatever.

For me the WW2 setting is an immediate turnoff, but I don't like war themed things in general (games, movies, novels). I'm just not into murder. I know it's just a game, but I mean, I don't know. I'm just not into it.

Sorry to be a wet blanket. I really should probably just stay out of topics like this and let everyone else just enjoy the things they like.

As someone who was sick of World War 2 shit. (being Dutch means you get to see a lot of boring movies about it at school), I think WW2 stuff can still be interesting if done well and differently. For example, Inglourious Basterds might be my favorite Tarantino movie. I haven't played Company of Heroes, but it doesn't look like every other WW2 game ever, mostly because it's an RTS and not a first person shooter. It probably wouldn't be as well received as it is if it was like every other game set in that time period. :P

I fully fully agree. I'm actually pretty creeped out by how prevalent soldier worship is in gaming. I mean everybody loves a badass, but glorifying actual war is a trend I hope ends soon.

This is why I LOVE Sega shooters. Robots, robots, zombies and robots.

Valkyria Chronicles is World War 2....unless you mean RTS' in general...but Valkyria is almost there.

And the closest RTS you can get to World War is Toy Soldiers on XBLA.

Here is a link to a document that kinda breaks down Sega's purchase of Relic...

http://www.thesangreal.net/gafpics/sega_relic.pdf

Sega owns all previous copyright of Relic titles apart from Homeworld.
