Title: Sonic design whine.
Post by: Sharky on February 13, 2010, 05:51:34 am
As much as I hate the people whining about Sonics new design etc...

I found this on the NeoGaf from what I understand its related to Sonic CD and I really wish Sega would make Sonics design a bit more like this:

The cartoony look is really great as is the movment.

Here is someones redesign of that:

Sonic running in Smash Bros is the best example of what Sega HAVE to do with him on Sonic 4.

Sega don't need to bring back the old design, just make him a bit more "cute". I like the green eyes.

I love that gif design. Imagin a 2-D Sonic 4 that looked like that, hand drawn and over the top animation. I love it.

I always preferred the Sonic CD/Sonic the Movie peel out animation for Sonic. It just seems so right!

Nintendo only has one Mario design, but Sega shouldn't follow that strategy since it has a much larger proportion of adult buyers that aren't "kids at heart",    and adapt Sonic to different market segments with varying Sonic designs (without going overboard with Sonic variations...)

Classic Sonic alone could be big business to Sega.

The only reason people hate Sonic's newer design is because his personality changed a lot with it, and how he presents himself. For instance, Sonic never had an angry toothy grin before Sonic Adventure, now he does for almost every damn game. Even I think it is stupid.

What? Mario has changed styles far more times than Sonic has...

I know you hate Nintendo and all, but you have some kind of weird crusade against them man.

I don't really have anything against the current design.
The Sonic CD inro movie was my favourite too though.  I can't even remember how many times I watched that thing.

I have to say I have always preferred sonic to be a little rounder and that gif is perfect

Most people do not like Sonic's new design because they associate it with the decline of the series. Nothing else. No one, or anyone for that matter on forums before and after Sonic Heroes complained, if at all, about the change in Sonic's current design, if anything it was completely positive.

Also I would prefer a model of that instead of a sprite, there I said it!

SEGA confirmed Sonic is going to have a running style similar to Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD. Hopefully that means the Super Peel Out is in there!

I don't think the 'longer sleeker' look, looks better. IMHO.

Well my personal favourite is the Sonic CD/Sonic OVA Sonic anyway. Would have liked to have seen that in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 but doubt SEGA is going to want to completely rebrand everything Sonic again.

Isn't it just that the old sonic had this tinge more of attitude and character where as the new one loves children and is not offending to anyone?

I like the CD one better too, but that second coloured animation looks retarded. His face reminds me of Batman from Adventures of Batman and Robin on Megadrive (autistic bird-pointy face). They need to make him fat and short like the old games, but not turn him into some grotesque, freakish spawn of anime. He is supposed to be a round rat, after all, not some tall skinny guy.

Also I never liked the Super Peel Out. Sure it looks cool, but you just bang into enemies so you may as well just do a spindash for the same thing, except with less vulnerability and having an attack. It also causes fire to come out of his feet, which may cause a problem for Tails.

The Sonic CD/Anime style was great.

It just looked so damned cool!

Even so, I think its a very 90's look. The new one fits better the modern art tendencies.

I just hope they don't make the spines look floppy in this game. They've been doing that a lot lately. Aren't those things supposed to cut through metal?

I think they forgot about them being sharp when Tails could cut through metal the same way.

Still, starting from Sonic 06 up to now, they look like big floppy tentacles coming out of his head instead of spines.

Well the folks at Sonic Team think this keeps the characters cartoony and true to their roots. They do not realise that Sonic had solid, unmoving spines in the older games. They never moved at all (that might still seem bad in 3D games, but for 2D it worked). Tails was the same, looking a bit fuzzy instead of being the solid, waxy thing all the characters are now. I guess it is all just the result of untalented graphical artists who need an excuse for their inability to do good character models.

I liked the sonic unleashed character model, he was less edgy looking.

I agree sonic CDs design was the best though, I can almost see the intro in my minds eye b

Oh nice. Something between Sonic 3 and CD is fine by me as long as it animates well. I am hopeful the game just plays fun. I'm not all that stuck on the visual style of the game. Modern Sonic isn't all that bad. I was a kid when Sonic 1/Altered Beast were released. I grew up with the character. Things change.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the Figure-8/Infinity running blur from Sonic CD being used? I mean, It was okay in Sonic CD as something to differentiate the game a little, but it was never really used elsewhere, and it just looks odd. Like I can see a circle blur being created from running very fast, but a sideways 8? How does that even work?!

Well anyway, I agree I loved the Sonic OVA and CD intro/ending look the best.

His legs came around in a full circle in the Genesis games and you think the the figure eight animation is weird?

Plus, Brawl explains it:

The video is edited near the end, I do not know what the joke is supposed to be, so we should ignore the existence of it entirely.

It's not that his legs go full circle, it's that his legs are constantly moving back and forth on the same arc that causes a blur that looks like a circle. It makes more sense than each leg detatching from his body and running on their own arc or whatever fucking crazy voodoo magic bullshit causes that infinity sign.

Think about it, the circle actually somewhat makes sense, but has been stylised a bit, the other is just nonsense.

I mean, Sonic is nothing if not accurate in it's portrayal of optical illusions.
