Well that's even more confusing. All this time I thought they were the same. But if they were side by side does that mean shared continuity?

According to the series creator (Ryuichi) and also the story in Monster Boy and Cursed Kingdom : yes, same continuity (but separated by centuries I think).
These two pics which supports the claim could fall into spoiler category,
but since the game has been released more than one year I think it's okay if I post these :

Ryuichi Nishizawa : 'We've taken the fans into account'
Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World Interview

Quote
"When we were developing the version of Mega Drive in the 90s, the Internet was not as widespread as it is now, and there was no interaction with fans.
Even if the game had been released, we did not know the opinion of the people who had played it.
How many people had found it interesting? Even if you wanted to know, there was no way to know.
Now people can evaluate your work while it's in development, it's a different world"

New Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World Trailer highlights voice actors

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWBsNlcbO0o

For the first time in Wonder Boy history, the in-game characters will actually have voices in Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World, a remake of the 1994 SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive classic Monster World IV.
I’ve been pretty iffy with this title but slowly, as each trailer releases, its been getting me more interested. My only issue is .......

Interview: Wonder Boy creator Ryuichi Nishizawa explains why he’s returned after 27 years

Quote
"I think I was inspired by Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap and Monster Boy in a big way. The passion of (Dragon’s Trap remaster director) Omar Cornut, (its artist) Ben Fiquet, (Cursed Kingdom director) Fabien Demeulenaere and others influenced me with their passion.
Since they had proven the potential of the Wonder Boy series, I wanted to respond to that.
I would be happy if the games I loved playing as a kid were developed in a modern way and made easier to play."
